Carlisle was a lucky man. His daughter Erin had survived the kidnapping thanks to two brave women that Carlisle owed everything too. She was a little thinner now, of course not having been as well taken care of when being treated as little more than a hostage to milk her fathers pockets. But the money had eventually gone and more desperate measures had been taken. Thankfully Erin was unhurt. Carlisle was a little the worse for wear but he had sustained no life threatening injuries. Mere flesh wounds, although the arrow through his side did leave a lingering ache. It had been nearly two weeks since the rescue and still Carlisle hadn't reopened the clinic. Partially because he had been healing himself and was just now feeling up to his work. But also because he had wanted time to dote on his daughter. Spoiling her rotten and absorbing every tiny moment with her as if it were his last. Because as he had very recently learned, it indeed could be.
It was evening now and the small closed sign was still turned outward in the window of his door. He had heard the rumors that burned through the local citizens like wildfire. Gossip was a powerful thing. Some said he had left Cendra because he had mistreated a patient and she passed away. Some said he had been scared so badly by the bandits that he was afraid to reopen his doors. And others even said he had died. So rarely did he frequent the market since his return that any of the options could have been plausible, even if none were true.
He had just laid Erin down for a nap when there was a knock on his door. Strange given that since his return he hadn't heard so much as a peep from anyone. The downtime wasn't great for his already empty pockets but was beneficial in other ways and as he gingerly moved down his stairs to the first floor or office he was reminded that he was still healing. The slight burning sensation in his side a warning not to push himself. But he was doing much better and if it happened to be a true emergency he wouldn't turn anyone away.
He strode over to the door and attempted to pull back the curtain but with the already darkening sky it was impossible to see beyond a simple silhouette. He turned the knob and opened the door enough so that his voice wouldn't wake Erin upstairs. "I'm sorry were temporarily closed, did you have an emergency?" His hand not holding the door rubbed at the healing cut across his neck as he waited for an answer. Why did injuries have to itch so horribly when healing?

It was strange to see Ladon far out in this part of the city. Perhaps it was because he was supposed to be back in the Naihan Mountains, guarding the prince. He had promised to after all. Well, the situation was a bit different this time. He knew not to venture into the Duskmire Woods for a while, in fear that something might occur like what had happened again. Instead he found himself in this city, the usual meeting place for all the races. The sky was growing dark now, and the man walked along the lonely street, most of the people within their homes for the night. He had made this journey all the way from the mountains, in search for an answer. Could he and the prince ever be together? He wondered. It took him many days to find his way here, however after one night he had encountered a mystic fortune teller. Ladon had been alone during that time, as he was making his way back toward the barracks. Perched on the edge of the palace's border there was a mysterious figure, one that shrouded hands around a crystal ball. It was his responsibility to make sure that the person left, as they would not have permission to be around at that time. However as he neared the fortune teller asked him something. "What is it that you desire?"
Ever since then he had been intrigued, and he had discussed with the mystic about his dealings, most notably his relationship with a certain person... keeping secret about it being the prince. He thought that the person was a mage, or had some sort of ability, as they did all sorts of tricks and magical performances, which impressed the dragon. He had not known about how certain magic worked within the realms of the other races, and didn't all quite believe in what the fortune teller had said, but it was interesting indeed. That was, until he was told that there was a time limit, that there was a way for it to all work, but he must head to Cendra City as soon as he could. Dismissing the idea at first he had gotten the person off the property soon after, but as he thought about it he was curious. He was given the exact directions of where to go, and it took him a while to think. More and more as it grew on his brain, and as time went on he thought about it. His relationship was as stuck as it always had been. Was there any hope for him?
Making his decision, he took a break, as there was the other merfolk guard to take care of him. Fortunately there was a kind understanding to his disappearance, but he had promised to make it back within a few days. Travel was made faster that he was a dragon, but not in all places he could fly. Though, in hiding he continued to fly and it was much faster than riding a horse. He had now arrived at the destination, his attention coming upon a sign that read that the place was closed. But the mystic had told him that it was here, this very place. Ladon sighed, looking up at the building. Would he really find answers here? That's what he was promised, and made it very clear that he had to arrive there soon or else the chance will fade. Leaving all his doubts behind, Ladon knocked. Well at least humans were not as dangerous as other dragons, he tried to reassure himself. But what was he doing at this place? Finding answers that a fortune teller had told him to seek out? Perhaps maybe he would explain himself, as silly as it might be, if asked. Or maybe whoever lied on the other side of the door would expect his visit. Even if it as a trap laid out by the mystic, he thought that it was worth the risk. There had to be some way to make everything work. Being a dragon for so long... trying to fit in with the modern world was something that he was not well suited for. And now that he had found some purpose, he couldn't handle if it was all gone. He would risk anything, try anything to make sure that he would remain in his current position. With the prince. Perhaps holding on to a hopeless belief that they could be together. But, he was willing to try. He was pretty adept with his blade now anyway, or at least he hoped.
There was an answer at the door, although he didn't expect to find one. A man poked his head out, asking if there was an emergency. Was there one? "I was told that you could help me," he said somberly, looking him straight in the eye. "I was sent here, I hope I am not interrupting anything," he then said politely, trying to remember his manners. He may be in the wrong location, the fortune telling may be a hoax, but, there was also nowhere else to stay in Cendra. And it was getting dark. He came all this way, hoping that what he was told would prove to be right.

Carlisle stared at the man skeptically for a moment before stepping back with the door knob in hand. Effectively pulling it open and presenting his darkened office to the stranger. Only a few candles burned now as he had been preparing for bed. If the man stepped inside Carlisle would let his eyes slip down his frame seeing now evident injuries. He didn't answer the question about interrupting. Just rest. But that was something he often went without. "What is that you were needing help with?" If the man entered he would softly close the door behind him. Dusting his hands together and striding over to the examination table that sat in the middle of the room to allow his hip to lean against it.
The movement irritated his injury just a tad and a look of pain briefly came to his face before he pushed it away. His eyes once again slipped over the man with a curious but he extended a hand to shake regardless. "You were looking for a physician, right? I'm Carlisle Hilthrom and this is my clinic."

Ladon looked around as his eyes inspected the place, as he entered he could feel the warmth from within the building compared to the growing coldness outside. He watched as the man walked to the table and back, his mind going through many thoughts. A physician? A clinic? Suddenly he was beginning to feel a wave of regret rush through him. He shouldn't have come here. Shouldn't have listened to that fortune teller. What could a physician do to help a guard and a prince be together? Maybe he was just given a wrong address, or some random place and the fortune telling was a hoax. Either way he shook the man's hand, gazing at him with his usual serious glance. "I am Ladon," he introduced himself. He then looked around, sideways then downward. Well, what to say? Where would he start, well, from the beginning he assumed. He cleared his throat before starting to speak again.
"I..." it took him some confidence to begin. He looked up at the physician once more. "I was told from a fortune teller that you could help me. Though, now I am beginning to have my doubts," he said with unease, looking down again embarrassingly. He scratched the back of his neck absentmindedly, before speaking again with more clarity. "He sent me to this place. I paid him much coin but if you cannot help me then I am afraid I have been fooled," he tried to give a smile but it wasn't quite all there. "Forgive me for bothering you." But he didn't have a place to stay, anywhere else to go. "I came a long way, from the Naihan Mountains," he began. It would be nice if the man offered him the place to stay for the night. Of course, he thought that he was going to ask him what it was he desired to know. But Ladon almost wasn't ready for that just yet, he didn't know the man quite well enough based off of first judgement and wasn't sure if he was going to kick him out. He thought that he couldn't just blabber the fact that he was having relations with a werebeast leader's son.
He stood in place, but continued to look around. "So you are a physician?" He asked with curiosity. "That means you don't rely on healing magic, correct?" His head tilted slightly. The dragon was somewhat familiar with such practices. Many humans have sought his aid so long ago. He knew that they often used remedies unrelated to magic. He thought it was an old practice, and was interested to see if the human had continued it.

Carlisle watched the evasive stranger with mild concern. He was still recovering from being injured after his daughter was stolen from him, anyone acting shifty or evasive would naturally make him suspicious. Carlisle listened to the strangers words and nodded along to show he was listening. A fortune teller sent him? But...why? "Forgive me Ladon but I still don't know how I can help? Are you injured? If it's a personal issue you need not worry about discretion. I am the only one here." Well other than Erin but she wasn't exactly able to repeat sordid details. [break][break] "Naihan Mountains? You must be tired out." Carlisle gestured to one of the available chairs and sat down on a stool. Proping his long limbs up on the bars he turned to Ladon again, trying to keep the skeptical look off his face. "Yes? And Yes. I don't have any magical abilities. Did you need a magical healer or...?" [break][break] The silence stretched and he crossed and uncrossed his arms, scratched ad a loose stitch in his aging pants. Look around the room while trying not to harass the man with more questions but he just didn't know what use he could be to him. And honestly he would like some sleep. His side was pulsing with short little pangs of pain. [break][break] "Were you hungry, thirsty? I just...don't know what you need." A short laugh as he looked at the stairs that would lead him back to Erin.

"It's alright," he gestured with one hand, palm facing toward the man as if he was trying to reassure him that his questions were valid. "I am unsure as well," he then looked down, averting the embarrassment in his eyes as they faced the floor below. Just what exactly should he say? Explain to him what had happened with the fortune teller? Tell him who he was? Perhaps Carlisle knew of him. Well, he was unsure of why the mystic sent him here of all places, but with a nod he walked toward the chair then sat down in it. His head faced toward where the other was. His position was upright and stiff, as if he were also uncomfortable with the situation. He was now beginning to regret coming here. He should leave by morning at least if he offered to stay the night.
"I don't know why he sent me here of all places," he smiled honestly, although it was a rather painful smile. Nothing in the person before him made him believe that he was the one to help him in his relationship with... the prince. But as he then placed two hands on his knees his attention turned to the side. He should tell him something at least, to perhaps make more sense. "I am not injured. It is a personal matter. One very dear to me..." he spoke, dark eyes looking up to him once more. Then he realized about his question, he looked surprised for a moment before clarifying himself. "Oh, I was just curious. Physicians are rare these days. Most rely on healing magic. Though how people still practice it astonishes me." He then realized his words may be offensive. "I don't mean that they are ineffective. In fact I believe that sometimes it is a better way to go," he said, looking to see the man's reaction. Indeed, a dragon who lived over a few thousand years had yet learned to master the art of having a normal conversation with humans. With the prince he felt comfortable because he had a duty, but with this... stranger, it was different. Even when he was a dragon people had sought him out, so he could lend them his wisdom. But with this... situation, it made him regretful that he had listened to that fortune teller. The man probably thought of him as a fool.
Ladon then thought. Was he hungry? Thirsty? He was, but he thought he would resist and continue to be polite for now. If the other thought him to be greedy then perhaps he wouldn't let him stay over. Instead he just waved an arm. "I am fine, I was not too long ago at a tavern," he lied. He had not much coin on him since this was a long journey. As a guard he did not get paid much. Still, he was grateful to have something rather than nothing nonetheless. He was silent for a moment, looking again to the side before continuing and averting his eyes back to him. "The fortune teller told me that... you would be able to help me... in a relationship matter," he began, feeling heat rise to his head. He was making himself vulnerable, but what other choice did he have in this situation? He could lie about the prince though. "We have certain... complications, that we cannot be together," he explained. Hopefully it made more sense. "Hence the need for help. I don't know why he'd send me to you but..." his eyes moved to the ground, then back to him. "Could you help?" he asked, hope in his eyes.

As Ladon began to speak again Carlisle listed, keeping his calm reserved air despite the odd circumstances. The poor man almost seemed in pain as he went on to say it was a personal matter that was dear to him. A family member perhaps? It was all just so cryptic. At the somewhat offense way his skills were referred to Carlisle only smiled. He was well aware that many preferred the art of magic, but for those who did not or couldn't afford such a luxury, he was there. Ladon seemed to realize his words sounded a little harsh and hurried to explain. At that Carlisle held up one hand with an easy smile. "It is alright, I understand the limits of what I can do. But I feel that I help people, all the same. And that is what matters." [break][break] He was silent and didn't press as a tiny bit of info came from the man, again vague as it had ever been. "Do you mean...physically? One of you is having an issue?" He stood then and strode over to the small basin that he kept full of water to wash his hands in with a bit of soap. Once they were clean he grabbed a small towel and dried his hands. Walking over to Ladon he stopped. "If there is an issue just lay down on the table and let me take a look. I assure you there is no reason to be embarrassed. As a physician, I have much in my time." [break][break] One hand fell to rest on his slender hip as he waited. "I can't really tell you if I can help until I know the precise problem." He explained.

Ladon looked to the side begrudgingly, not wanting to give out more details yet here he was. Fortunately they weren't in the Naihan Mountains, so maybe he could give a few details to him. Looking back up at him Ladon began to speak. "No, not physically," he sighed, finding his eyes moving downward again. He tried to focus them back on the doctor. "You see, I am his... guard," he said, not knowing if that was really the right thing to say. He didn't know where to start, so he might as well give some detail. Or perhaps it was his secret desire. Ladon always had to keep this to himself. He had never felt love before, not even as a dragon, so it was a beautiful bliss yet also very painful. Perhaps he always wanted to speak about the strange feelings he had, no, that he got when he met the prince.
"He is... quite an important figure," he spoke, looking off into the distance. "I... we... there is a social standing between us," his eyes made their way back again. Maybe this time this would make more sense. His focus then shifted downward. "I don't know if he is going to get married off to someone else of the same standing. I don't know what I would do if that happened," a nervous smile came to his face, shaking his head as he continued to look at the ground. He would do anything in his power that he could to make sure that he and the prince would be together, but for how long would it last? Of course he would be devastated if it did happen. He could also feel a little jealousy, perhaps toward whoever was fortunate enough to marry the kind werebeast. But Ladon couldn't outright kill them, especially if they were important. It felt so... wrong. All of these feelings he never felt before. He would never kill over such a trivial matter. Yet... it mattered much to him.
His face finally faced back to Carlisle. "I... I don't know what to do," he said, looking at him hoping that he could help in some way. Any way. Anything could help.

When he realized that the source of Ladon's problem was actually nothing physical Carlisle sat down on the table himself. One leg dangling down to softly scuff against the floor. He felt for the man, he really did. But at the same time he knew that this meant he couldn't help him. Carlisle frowned and turned his dark eyes toward the floor. "I wish there was a way to help you Ladon but...there isn't. At least not something I can do." Hell..he couldn't even help himself. [break][break] This world was cruel, something that Carlisle had very recently learned first hand. Having his daughter ripped from his grasp had been heart-wrenching. But he had also gotten her back safely and had two women he didn't even know offer him assistance without accepting a coin in payment. [break][break] Carlisle turned to look at the stairs, knowing his daughter was sleeping just a wall away. "You can rest here tonight Ladon. You seem like you could use some rest. I'll bring you down a blanket and a pillow. I do not have a spare bed, but I do have some tea that I put on to boil earlier and you are welcome to a cup." He waited to see if the conflicted man would accept his offer, a kind patient smile on his lips.

Ladon looked at him surprisedly. "Thank you..." he said, with his mouth gaped open for a second. He was surprised at his hospitality. Was that the reason why the fortune teller sent him here? He began to wonder why the mystic actually sent him here. The doctor didn't seem to have the ability to help him out in the situation, however he was kind enough to let him sleep the night. Perhaps it was a journey for himself, to focus on what was really important. Perhaps he was meant to stay here only for the night. He then gave a smile at his offering. "That would be great," he said. It probably shined through that he didn't have anything at any tavern. He was starving, and incredibly thirsty so tea sounded excellent. He hoped that he wasn't burdening him too much though. Fortunately he was just one person, and there was no one else seemingly that the man had to take care of. Looking around the room, he wondered what else he should say. If the fortune teller wanted him to know something by going out of his way and visiting this doctor, then perhaps he should converse with him more. After all, he would most likely leave by morning and never see him again. Though, the man seemed kind enough.
Still wondering what the mystic meant, he then thought of something to say. "Do you know the fortune teller?" he then asked, hoping that he might say yes. Though, he didn't comment about him before, so he assumed not. After all, he seemed just as confused as Ladon was. Then he was silent for a moment, knowing that his answer would end in a no. He then glanced around the room some more, wondering what else he should say. Perhaps as a dragon... he needed some advice, on this "love" thing. "Do you live alone?" he then asked, seeing no pictures or anything of the kind that gave away whom he lived with. Maybe he did and they died, for that is a reason why he could be a doctor. Or maybe they were just sleeping upstairs. Ladon had no clue.
"I... Sometimes I'm not sure about my own feelings," he admitted hesitantly, looking downward at the ground. He then looked upward toward him again. "Well, I love him, but..." Oops. It slipped. He didn't know how the other would take it, but nevertheless, his romantic relationship wasn't meant to be to begin with. He then sighed. "It just gets painful sometimes. I get these strange urges..." he then spoke, looking at the palm of his hand before closing it into a fist. His eyes then averted toward him once more. "I... I don't know. Sometimes the times are good, other times I feel that I am not myself," he then spoke truthfully. He didn't know what he was saying really, just jabbering whatever came to his mind. But... these things had been plaguing his mind for some time now. And he couldn't talk about it with the prince.
