When times were hard After a trip away to visit the Kraken for advice and to see her parents, Karmina arrived back home. She had been away for some time, and the guards quickly stood to attention when she swam by. She smiled warmly at the guards and went straight to her room.
It felt strange being back at the palace, with everyone but she had her duties and had to see to them. She took a comb off her table and ran it through her white blonde hair. Humming softly to herself, she looked at her reflection and carried on.
A huge commotion kicked up in the palace about Karmina's return. A servant went to find the King, and when he did he bowed lowly. "Your Majesty. Queen Karmina has come home." He said, happiness laced in his voice. Some of the others were happy to see the king and Queen reunited, however the love was only one sided. Karmina loved Earindil, even if the marriage was for diplomatic purposes, she had grown to have feelings for him.

It was an unspeakably good thing that Earindil was actually home when Karmina returned. It wasn't that he was afraid that she'd be angry with him, but he had been traveling an awful lot of late. He already heard enough complaints from his parents. No, if he was honest with himself, he was a bit intimidated by his wife. They had been married twenty years, but that was such a short time for a 240-year-old merman. He didn't dislike her. He simply didn't feel as though he had been ready to settle down and marry. And he wasn't the best at romance, either. Nevertheless, he couldn't deny he was happy that she was back.
He swam, more quickly than usual, to her room. Once there, he knocked before entering and bowed slightly, smiling. "My Queen." He crossed the room to kiss her hand.

When times were hard Karmina smiled warmly at Earindil and returned the gesture. "It's good to be home. You haven't been up to too much mischief whilst I was away, have you?" she slightly teased. It felt like she had been away for a lifetime, but everything looked and felt the same. However, the Kraken's warning was still ringing in her ears. She knew now why many merpeople were always eager to get his counsel on situations. It was true what people said. Wisdom cam with age and the Kraken was really old. When her family became close friends with the legendary sea monster he was always there for them.
The queen hid her extreme happiness to be back in Earindil's presence again. She cleared her throat and went back to sorting her things out. "I trust everything is in order. You know I hate cleaning up messes. Especially ones that could've been avoided." she sighed, as she clipped her sword to her waist. It was common to see her with a weapon, she wasn't a push-over female, she was strong and free-spirited. She looked at her husband as she tied her hair up, and secured it with a mother of pearl hair clip.

"Mischief? Me? Of course not." he said, and winked. He'd only gone to the surface a couple of times, run into a couple of mermaids from the past, now posing in disguise on two different pirate ships. It was really nothing terribly exciting and nothing for her to worry over. Well, there was one thing, but this time it hadn't been his fault. Now he just had to work out how to tell Karmina about it. As queen, she had to know. Earindil hadn't spoken much about the news since receiving it.
"Everything is in order, but for one thing." He paused to sigh and buy himself some time. "My cousin, the hybrid Noelle came bearing news. My aunt was killed at the Emberi ball. Noelle thinks there may be war on the horizon." He stopped to look Karmina in the eye, seeking... something. Comfort or advice, he did not know. The loss of his aunt was tragic, of course, but Earindil hadn't been terribly close to her. The idea of a war disturbed him much more. The question rose in his mind again: would the merfolk fight honorably this time, or plunder ships as they had before?

When times were hard Her face turned to one of concern and worry, when he told her what had happened. Karmina placed a hand on his cheek, looking at him with eyes of understanding and love. She rested her forehead against his. "Those land walkers will pay for what they have done. I swear it." She whispered, her eyes closed.
She had inherited the Siren's Song from her mother. It was a dangerous gift, and had lured many a unwary human and sailor to their doom. She pulled Earindil into a hug, then quickly swam to her desk, and began writing a note for all those mermaids who had the gift of Siren's Song to meet her in the throne room. The land walkers had angered the wrong queen, and would regret it. "I have a plan... But I'm not sure whether you'd like it. Siren's Song is a dangerous weapon. I plan to use it to lure out those who have taken an innocent merfolk's life. As you know it can bring a human death when lured into the water. If those humans want war, they will get it. However we will need the aid of the Kraken. He lives in the deepest depths of the ocean. I will send some guards to retrieve him." Karmina explained. Her love for her king was strong, and she would go to Hell and back for him.

He meant to stop her, or at least to slow her down, but he knew better than most that once she set her mind to something there was no stopping her. He finally found her in the throne room. "Forgive my interruption, but I need a word with the queen." he said as he approached her and pulled her to the side. "Your passion is admirable. You know I love that. But we may want to slow down and speak about this. We don't know if the human king is to blame or someone else entirely. I love a good fight but it wouldn't be in Dorsina's best interest to wage war against the other kingdom so hastily." He took hold of her hand. "Keep your plan in mind. We may need it yet."

When times were hard Karmina sighed a frustrated sigh. She looked at her king and folded her arms. "Alright, fine... But if this human kingdom decides to take the first hit then I will be going straight to the Kraken." She said. Karmina tightened the sword belt on her hip, and if she knew humans, she knew they feared the depths of the oceans. She was a smart mermaid, but when she had her mind set on a goal she liked to see it through.
This time she had to be patient. Taking a deep breath she tried to calm herself. She knew she could be reckless at times, so she had to use her head instead of her heart. "Forgive my brashness. I let my heart get in the way of rational thinking." the Queen apologised.

He nodded, smiling a little. Nevertheless, he turned to the room full of mermaids and waved his hand. "Thank you all for coming. We may have need of you in the future, but for now, you can all return to your daily lives." Most of them took it as a gentle command to leave. The rest caught on quickly. In minutes, the throne room was empty, except for Earindil and Karmina.
"I rather like your brashness." he said. Then he paused, thinking. His smile faded and he met her eyes again. "I remember the war, a century ago. I was young and foolish and I spent too much time on land. The merfolk were destroying ships left and right. It's where our riches came from. How would it look if the king and queen came marching out of the sea with an army, accusing the human king of murder?" He shook his head. "But if he is a murderer..." He shook his head again.
"Enough of this warmongering. Tell me about your trip, my lady." Had he already asked her about it? He couldn't recall. Either way, he listened intently.
OOC: No problem! BTW do you think Karmina would like to join Earindil at the mini event on land?

When times were hard Karmina looked away. "It was fine... The Kraken is on edge, he knows something is wrong he even told my parents." the mermaid explained. She fiddled with her pendant that held some of the Kraken's valuable ink. She didn't really like talking much about her family, especially when her loved ones were in possible danger. She looked worried but shut anyone out who tried to get in and help her. She was like that, and she always had been. She always thought she had to put up a front to remain strong, especially since she was the queen of the Merfolk.
She looked at her husband. "That's all you need to know." she abruptly spoke and swam back to her room. Back there, she let her emotions out. Truth be told her mother had been poisoned by those monstrous land walkers and had kept it to herself. She cried softly and lay on her bed. Karmina had never felt so alone. She heard a knock at her door. "Please... Go away." she choked through her tears.

His eyes flicked to her pendant as she spoke and fidgeted with it. He took a deep breath as he felt his anxiety level begin to rise. As much as he liked combat, he didn't quite want a full-out war. If that was even what she was talking about.
He was about to ask her what she meant when she cut him off. She was just as anxious as he was, it was plain on her face. He should have known that she wouldn't want to discuss it. She swam off in a hurry, leaving him there on his own. Surely he hadn't done anything to upset her. Something must have been wrong. Karmina was strong and she preferred to put on a strong face. Still, he had a feeling this wasn't something he should let go. Not this time.
After a few moments' hesitation, he followed the way she'd gone. He paused again outside her door, but built up the courage to knock. He could have sworn he heard her voice crack. Yes, he was certain now; she didn't cry often, at least not that he knew of.
"Darling. Open the door. Let me speak with you." he reasoned. For once he was glad that his mother had insisted on lessons in eloquence and courtly manners. Though he doubted it would make much of a difference.

When times were hard The queen just ignored her husband and continued to cry softly. She didn't know whether her parents would be around next time she saw them. She fell asleep, due to the exhaustion that resulted in her heartbreaking emotion. She had nightmares about what the humans would do to them. They were vivid and realistic dreams like someone was tormenting her with these solid nightmares.
Waking with a start, her heart was racing and she heard pounding on her door. Within minutes the royal guard was in her room. "Your Majesty, we heard you screaming. Are you alright?" one guard asked. Karmina sat up, nodding slowly but it was a lie. She wasn't alright. She was being plagued by vivid and gory dreams of land walkers killing and mutilating her mother and father. She looked out of her window, watching the schools of colourful fish swim by.
Karmina looked visibly shaken like some had done something terrible to her. She wanted to be alone, but somehow she knew that was not going to happen. Letting out a sigh, she dismissed the guard but let them keep her door open. She carried on watching the fish, trying to take her mind off things.

He tried for some time to convince her to let him in. Since it was proving unsuccessful, he eventually returned to his duties. There were people to meet with, things to discuss, and if all else failed he would speak to his wife when she was good and ready. Happy wife, happy life. Indeed.
It was hours before he heard about her again. In fact, his mind had wandered near and far since being sent away. There were many things to discuss about the wide world of the sea, and even a bit about the world above.
He enjoyed going about his day; at least it kept his mind off things. Of course, the consequences of the day caught up with him, as those tend to do. It came in the form of report from a particularly overbearing servant that Karmina was screaming in her room. Even if that individual servant was known to exaggerate, it set his heart racing again. He couldn't investigate himself; he still had his duties. Instead he made sure the guard was looking after her. He made sure to tell them to leave the door open.
When he finally had some free time, he found her watching the fish in her room. Still hesitant, he mustered his courage and knocked on the door frame. "Highness?"
