Her body still ached, and felt strange. She flapped clumsily through the air, over the forest. Her magic was weak, but she held enough within her still to camouflage the sight of her over the trees as she flew. She was almost home, almost to where she would be safe, where her wyrm hounds would guard her until she could figure out this new form and how everything worked. It was a miracle she hadn't fallen out of the sky already. Relief fled through her system as she smelled the dank scent of the Mire crossing it's borders. So close. She just needed to find a clearing to land within.
Too late, she remembered. Ladon would be at her home by now. Her home was not safe. Exhaustion and fear shot through her, freezing her wings mid-flap and arresting her flight. But this didn't stop her momentum. From flying through the air, she went into a tumble, and crashed into the forest. Her magic fled as she tried to tuck her long neck around in a manner that would keep her head safe. Such a thing wasn't really possible, and the woman-turned dragon crashed through trees, breaking them and then sliding to a halt. She was less than a quarter mile from her home.
Fear lingered, but pain was what truly overcame her at that moment. Her body, already wracked with the pain from changing, now also was wracked with fresher pain of bruises. Her scales, strangely flexible and yet incredibly strong, kept her from any blood-letting on her body, but her wings were not so lucky. Thick hide, they still scraped up rather badly, and Shaecayrn gave up for a moment, laying there in the dank mud. She shifted just enough to not continue harming her body, ending up sprawled awkwardly across the ground and the pile of brush and trees she had brought down with her, like a meteor slamming into the earth. Jewel-tones were muddied with the murk of the Mire. Her main mass covered about forty feet of ground, and her tail and neck added a yet unknown amount of length to that, weaving around... Her wings were spread over the ground, not unlike a hatchlings would after they escaped their eggs.
And there, she debated giving up entirely. A soft, almost pitiful whine came from her, even as her despair began, so slowly, to turn to anger and determination. After everything she had accomplished, was she really going to give up now? 'Yes... just let me die.' One pitiful voice sounded in her mind. She had never felt this much pain. She had given it to others, without regret, without guilt. Undoubtedly, she would do so again. But to feel it herself was quite awful. She had mastered the Change though. Defiantly, her eyes rolled toward the direction of the mage school. "Take that, you old bastard!' The thought was directed toward Arlyn. But despite all of this, she couldn't bring herself to move. To top it all off, her stomach rumbled, and she was shocked to find herself longing for a deer, for the taste of warm blood. 'Sweet Lady of Shadows...does this body give me its instincts as well?'
Sprawled over the broken forest floor, jeweled scales could be seen even through the murk. Along her back was dark, ebony, but it faded into deep amethyst and then sapphire, lighter and lighter until along the bottom of her body was silver. Horns protruded from an almost delicately formed head, spiking along her back, and her claws extended from paws that were more dexterous than a humans, if they had been the same size.
Trying to convince herself to get up, the dragoness let out a soft sound of pain, not quite a whine, and it was louder than she expected, startling her into jumping slightly and then sagging back down as pain slammed through her head. A groan came after, her head curling down toward her chest and her paws coming up to grip it in an all too human gesture. She didn't even noticed the not quite silent footfalls coming nearby.

Ladon had been waiting at the lair, for some time now. Kept within the company of only her creations, they were quite dull. Well, not to many who would be intrigued by their unusual nature, but to him at least. Though he did take pleasure in stealing Salil's food, the poor sea-like serpent starved of his meat stash for the morning. Oh how dreadful he was. Though it was sickening to see how much of his humanity was drained. Now he was nothing more than a mere beast, his mind solely on food and primitive wants. But, it brought a sadistic pleasure to him. He was glad to see the monster he was now. It was worse than the death the dragon could have granted him indeed. Leaving the poor beast to starve he exited the chamber, still wandering about the lair as he had nothing much to do. He had flown her there to the isles within the sky, something he vaguely knew about despite the wise old dragon he was, for a reason of her usual plans. He didn't think much further upon as to what she was going to do there before he promptly returned to the mire. Now to keep himself entertained he actually picked up a duster and began cleaning. Oh now pitiful a once, great dragon could be. He was known for his wisdom, for the sake of his lonesome he had advised many. That's what he was known for. And that was still who he was, deep inside his now human heart.
But, now he was much more like a servant rather than the magnificent begin he once was, both in body and mind. He would remember the fog that clouded around him, his black snout as he awaited whoever sought him out by the river. Those memories flooded back to him, in a blur as he cleaned. What was there even to clean within a murky place like this? Well, that did not matter to him. He did not even wish to be a human. Meeting the prince was only a chance encounter. However he now knew that even their relationship was shortly lasted. That's how humans were. No, that's how most other races were. Everything lasted short. But even for a dragon as such as him, his many centuries by the river had ended when the war had brought dragon hunters to slay them. Those times came to an end. But even as he knew everything that had a beginning, had an end, he didn't expect this. This is how dragons were now. Trapped within the own bodies of mockery of the other races. They had no place of belonging in this world no longer. Not as a dragon anyway. Only as a mere human, who still did not age like a regular one. Indeed, they were in peril.
As he thought as he continued to clean, dusting off a little off the cages before accidentally brushing against a wyrm-hound's nose before it promptly bit the cleaning tool. He tired to pull it out from its mouth before the ground had shaken, sending him and the hound nearly tumbling forward from the might of the shockwave. What was that? Ladon turned around. Was there something here to get rid of her lair? Preparing himself to defend it he left the duster in the dog's mouth as he moved away from the room and near the entrance, further placing the dark coat that hung around him. Moving outside as his tall black boots trudged through the thickness of the dark violet marsh, he only walked for a few moments before spotting a grand sight beyond the trees.
Not knowing what sort of creature it was, Ladon moved closer to it with caution. Suspecting that it must be another of her experiments or perhaps a creature that sought refuge within the wilderness, Ladon walked near it by the head of the creature, slowly as to not perturb it. But, as he moved around it, he spotted large, silver markings around one eye. It took him a moment to register, but then it hit him. Eyes briefly widened as a foot unconsciously faltered backward, taking in the surprise before him. He saw the wings. This was a dragon. But that marking. No, it was Shimmer!
Baffled by her appearance, his form suddenly regained itself, keeping his posture upright as he looked upon her with seriousness. She appeared to be in a weak state, and had a crash landing no less. Though, he couldn't say he was too surprised, but, were all her experiments, his blood, was it all for this? Taking one step forward, he looked at her directly.
"Shimmer, is that you?" he asked, although rather bluntly as if he were unamused. He wanted to see if her sanity was still intact, unlike many of her creations such as Salil.

Her eyes were closed, and she had, for the moment, focused inward. So focused was she that she didn't noticed even as Ladon came closer to her. The murk of the Mire was cool against her scales, and it felt good, much in the way that cool water felt when running a fever. Was a dragon's body temperature supposed to be high, as if she held a fire in her heart? And what was this? Did her heart in fact beat faster? She could hear it, as if it were triple the speed... So absorbed in herself was she that it was only when Ladon spoke that she registered his presence. Her eyes snapped open and her head turned to look at him directly, rising a few inches off of the ground. Fathomless black eyes, lit with sparks of red and orange stared at him, a rumble of fury and defiance leaving her throat, lips peeling back to show a formidable set of fangs. The silver of her mage mark cut through the color of her scales like a sword, the tear-streak slipping all the way to her jaw, just as it had on her dark human face. It was unmistakably recognizable.
The growl fumbled to a halt with a slight wheeze as she ran out of breath, and pain shot through her lungs at the contraction of her muscles. The snarl slid away as she recognized Ladon, and the sparks in her deep eyes softened into a gentle gold. "Ladon." Her tongue and lips were strange to her, and though she managed to speak, it held a strange lilt to her voice. On top of that, her voice had deepened slightly, but was unmistakably female, sultry as a flame. Strange, but she supposed such changes were inevitable when one shifted the whole of their body into something new.
Her silver claws rent a trail of six lines into the dark ground, which filled swiftly with the cool, muddy water that seeped through the forest here. "You stayed, then." Something in her voice sounded almost as though she had expected him to leave while she was away. Perhaps she had. Shimmer began to shift her body, pulling her clawed feet under her and slowly shifted her wings, the most delicate part of her, surely. It took a few moments, but once her wings were tucked along her back, at least she didn't look like a large hatchling sprawled over the nest.
Her tail flicked around restlessly like a cat's as she lifted her head a little more, a regal curve coming to her neck. Nostril's flared as she took in the scent that Ladon's human form held. It was strange to smell so much detail around her. The murk of the Mire had never held so many layers to her before. Focusing, her eyes stared into Ladon, nostrils flaring as she listened to his heartbeat, stuffing her want for fresh blood from her mind for the moment. "You dislike this." It was spoken carefully, not as a question but as an observation, her tongue tasting the air slightly as she spoke.

He didn't really know what she meant by her comment. What? She had expected him to go? Well Ladon was going to stay here, he was purposeless after all. And if Luhan ever returned, then it would be here he would, Ladon assumed. Still, he stood in front of her, gazing upon her with his usual seriousness. He didn't move, didn't step back or near as she acknowledged his presence. He continued to look on at her as she peered at him, appearing to make herself comfortable in that very spot. He did not answer her comment about him staying for it was expected that he would. However her next words rang true. As he looked about her form, dark yet colorful, smaller than an average dragon, yet still one. He disliked it. He had been pondering about it when he first laid eyes upon her unique marking around her eye. "I do," he said simply. No use in hiding the fact. That was when he then came a bit closer, stepping a few times before halting again. His dark eyes gazed up to meet hers, his face expressionless.
Now why in the world would she want to become a dragon? Ladon had not felt much about it since Luhan left, however he did remember all of the horrors of what happened to him in the recent years before the treaty was signed. He was no longer bothered by it, but prior he had been dreadful about it. How the dragon hunters had slain the others. He was just by himself yet there were many after him. All alone by the river in solitude, yet he was still hunted anyway. They were all to blame for what few did. However many indeed had plundered villages and burned them, hoarding treasures in their lair to be the villains of tales told. This is why they had to take human form in the first place. Yet, why? Why would one be so foolish to take a dragon form, here and now? But Ladon wasn't one to wonder about her stupidity. Her choices were her own, and he would see her fall. But, he still owed her his favor, so, he couldn't let her fall now.
"Why?" he asked, looking at her with now a curiosity that had been peaked, with undertones of grief. "Why turn yourself into something that has been hunted for years until extinction?" His head tilted slightly, looking at her in wonder. Though, none of that mattered to him. He didn't care about himself nor the dragons. Not any longer.

Her eyes were almost unreadable, gentle golden sparks joined by gentle blue, and whirling around. Her tail still twitched restlessly, but there was a thoughtful air to her. Despite having managed to change herself, she had not yet mastered being a dragon, obviously. Landing was out of the question, flying chancy at best. The subtle nuance of draconic expression were far beyond her. But she turned her head slightly, listening to him as first he confirmed her thought, and then even more attentively as he spoke again, asking her why. His voice held layers of emotion within it, layers that she had not observed in him for some time.
Oddly, something akin to relief flushed through her. Perhaps he was not so broken as she had thought. As much as she held a liking for his current state of submission and obedience, it was almost sad to see him brought so low. Their first encounter had held him so defiant, strong... he had struggled despite having no room to move, and she had tricked him by wit and magical strength. This last while it had seemed more as if she could bend him to her will with a gesture. Appealing for about ten seconds before it was boring.
It was clear that he didn't understand. His questions centered around how dragons had been hunted. The sparks in her eyes whirled, varying speeds as she debated internally how to deal with this. She could not push him too far too quickly, and his state was still more fragile than she cared for. Perhaps soft admiration would do better than exhilerated bragging. She wasn't fully sure, but it seemed the safer route for this situation. Thoughtful blue shifted slightly darker, with golden and orange accents as the colors whirled in her fathomless orbs. Her voice was soft, not quite a whisper. "Oh, Ladon... How can you not understand?" It was a rhetorical question, obviously, and for the moment, the dragoness took a deep breath, her voice as warm as it ever had been around him, and for once, it seemed to lack the dangerous purr of manipulation or secrets. It was simple truth. Or rather, what she wished to be perceived as the truth.
"Dragons were hunted to such a low population before I was born. They were feared for long before that. Even those who were kind and generous and helpful, were feared because of what destruction had been caused by some of their brethren. In response to being hunted, you and those like you have hidden. Hidden so well that even though you have not been found out, a lack of young will lead to the extinction of your kind in the long run." This was nothing he didn't know, but it was the set up for something greater. Her speech got clearer as she continued to speak, her lips and tongue forming the words better, though the odd lilt to her words remained. "My first sight of a dragon held me near frozen in awe, and it was that encounter that led me to understand where my magic was leading me, where my destiny lie." Passion came into her voice, and determination, sparks of crimson and dark burgundy lighting her eyes with it. "Dragonkind must rise again. But you cannot rise if you must hide your scales and hide behind the soft skin of humankind. This change... this ... success marks the beginning of a campaign to free you all from the bonds that human fear has forced upon you. In order to truly help in such a thing, I must be able to walk among both humans and dragons. This is what my magic allows me to do." Her dark wings lifted slightly, as if in some form of small victory, and bared their silver underside.
Shimmer trailed off for a moment, her expression a little unsure as if she had bared a precious dream to him and worried that he might shoot it down. Her delicately formed head shook a moment later and then extended towards him, until her scaled muzzle pushed against his chest lightly. Her breath was hot, not quite scalding, and she emenated heat. "I want to see you free, Ladon, to wander the land as the gods intended you to be, not in this weak form, so fragile and easily broken. I want dragons to reign in the skies again, without fear of being hunted. And I will do anything I must to succeed in this." Shimmer's voice was gentle, almost kind, and her eyes whirled with different colored sparks again before settling into simple, fathomless black once again.
Internally, part of her was laughing in the background. The Mother of Darkness had allowed her to succeed, perhaps had even helped. She would not say it outright, but despite how bruised and battered she was from the Change itself, her body was able to take so much more than she had ever been able to before. And still, she could feel her reserves of energy refilling, so much larger than she was used to. The power alone of walking as a dragon would be well worth getting rid of the troubles that might plague them to allow dragonkind, and so herself, to wander freely in this form.
Her voice was quiet as she asked, curiosity driving her. "How do you stand it, Ladon? How can you put away your wings and walk on two legs as if that is what you are meant to do? I have never felt such joy as when I made my way through the sky." A memory surfaced of him, furious, enormous and black as midnight with eyes so white that they seemed like stars against his face. How could he want to be anything else? Her own eyes searched his for answers, hoping, perhaps that a spark of something interesting might return to him.

How could he not understand...? Indeed that was the question as he let the dragon-mage speak. He listened, hearing every single word that came from her mouth. Listening keenly. As she spoke his eyes narrowed, still standing in his current stance however he did shift a little. As if he felt uncomfortable by what she was saying. His boot stepped further back, one step into the mud behind him. The look he gave, was something far less subordinate than what he normally gave. Something of defiance. Upon hearing those words. His brown eyebrows furrowed from underneath the blonde bangs. Shimmer talked as if she knew dragons. Knew what they had gone through. All she could have done was study through books. How would she have known, about dragons? Anger boiled within him, a rather unusual trait he showed around her indeed. His chest began to heave, as he looked at her with distaste. All he could do was stare at her in silence. But, it had surprised him when she said that she had encountered another dragon. He didn't understand how or where, but her tok her words as truth. It could have been him, but he assumed that it wasn't. She must've known bout dragons, about wanting to become one, before she even encountered him. He took it as an insult that he would rather hide behind the soft skin of a human. He was no coward, only wise enough to know that remaining a dragon was not a good idea. Even though her idea of dragonkind rising again was tempting, there was no doubt that what might have occurred will happen again. Though, his main concern was still finding the prince. How could she think about him abandoning that idea? As much as he just wanted to leave it all behind, to spread his wings again, at the same time it disgusted him.
No, this was not success. Not to him. But if this was her goal, he wasn't going to stop her. But, he was certain that it was going to end in vain. Ladon knew of the ways of the other races, they were not just going to sit by and watch as dragons take the skies again. They were low in number as it was, almost near to extinction. In fact he wasn't sure if there were any other dragons present other than the few he had encountered and now. There will always be that fear. Perhaps now was not the time to discuss the reign of dragons. Were it before Luhan went missing, perhaps it would have been a favorable idea to him. But now this was who he was, he was not the dragon he once was. He had lost so much within a short period of time. He did not enjoy this. He never enjoyed this form. Not in the least bit. But he did not have a choice. How could she be so foolish?
Taking a step forward, it splashed some grey mud across as he put his foot down, looking at her angrily. "I don't," he said in a deep tone. "It is because we were hunted down. That is something upon the which someone like you would never understand!" he bellowed. "You are a mage! What do you possibly think you can achieve from this?!" He saw the idea as totally useless to be exact. "You do not know... You don't know anything about us," he said eyeing her directly, a scornful eye that was aimed at her. "You have no idea what it was like, to be hunted down for over hundreds of years. We had no choice!" He was yelling, a disobedient act yet his emotions were boiling within him. He didn't care about the fact that she was still more powerful than he at the moment, but the fact that she acted like she knew everything about him as a dragon. That life he tried to leave behind. "My kind was killed near to extinction! But it is not by our fear, it is by your foolishness which will bring another end!" His eyes flashed white then, a deeper voice that perhaps sounded much like from his dragon form leaked out into his vocal chords.

He withdrew from her as she spoke, and the corners of her mouth tilted down in a draconic frown. Once he responded through, part of her became amused once again. He got angry, raging at her in his disagreement with her choice, with her words, verbally lashing out. Quietly, she drew back slightly, holding herself still. Her tail came to a halt in its movement, her expression impassive and neutral. Only her eyes were outside of her control. A furious red sparked into them, whirling through the depths of black without end, swiftly as she hid her rising irritation. As he finished, his eyes flashing to white and his voice coming as though from a throat much larger than the human in front of her, Shimmer let out a soft huff, her heated breath spilling over him as her bulk shifted.
"Perhaps you are right. I know only as much about dragons as I can find through what I have had available to me. It is not as though I have a way to find your kind to learn from them directly unless I do the same to them as I did to you when we first met. I have no lived for centuries enough to know what it is like to be hunted for so long." Though her eyes still spun furiously at him, her voice was calm. "But I should have known that I could not expect your support in the path I have chosen to take. You are still here merely in the hopes that Luhan will return to you, and return light into your soul." Her voice had lowered into a hiss, teeth glinting in silver tones as her lips moved to form words that were alien to such a muzzle as she had now.
Disdain swirled into her gaze alongside the tightly controlled anger that boiled in her chest. The swampy mud began to steam around her, heated by her own body temperature. "Your fear will kill you as certainly as any foolishness of mine." Her head pulled back fully, neck arching. "Stay in your fear, if you wish, and hope for your short-lived lover to come searching for you. But until he comes, I'm the closest thing to a friend that you have." Her last sentence came out quietly, a warning. It was unlikely that he would care much if she did kick him out, he was apathetic enough. But if she removed him from her home, she would guard the Duskmire against him, and if Luhan returned in search of him, she would ensure their paths did not cross.
The dragoness grunted softly as she raised herself to her feet, eyes calming as she moved on swiftly from the emotions. Unusually swiftly. Even Ladon would be able to recognize the almost bi-polar swing of her emotions as suddenly the anger was gone. "There's a cave not too far from here. It would be prudent for the both of us to make our way to shelter. The Duskmire's danger is worse at night." Her wings shuffled on her back as she took a few steps before coming to a halt and looking at Ladon, as if waiting to see if he would come with her or not.

He looked at her with narrowed eyes as she spoke. It was true that he remained because of Luhan. Or what happened to Luhan, anyway. Everything she said was true. But he still held his doubts. Sighing, releasing his anger, she had spoken of a cave for shelter. Ladon walked in her direction, following her. "Fine. However if you bring another end to the dragons, that will be your own fault. I will not be there to aid you when it does," he said dismissively, trying to calm himself down as his eyes closed shut. His footsteps brought him alongside her, walking beside the large creature through the gloomy mire. It was true that he really didn't have anything else. Anything or anyone. He was purposeless essentially. He had no other purpose in life other than to survive. But now with the prince gone... He could do anything. Go off and become a normal occupation. He didn't need to stay with her because he needed shelter. A shelter hidden so that he and Luhan could have lived in peace. His boots stepped into the piles of the murky marsh, creating small splashes as he walked. After a while of silence, he didn't speak. He just was thinking of the possibilities. Of what could have been. But, they were all gone now.
"Is there anything you need for me to do?" he finally asked, dark eyes averted up to her. He needed something to keep himself busy. And being the mage that she was, indeed she needed many potions and ingredients that needed fetching. Rather than having her go and do it herself, he could do it instead. He also wanted a change of scenery. Somewhere far out from this swamp where the memories of Luhan and Salil were so vivid in his mind. The thought of Luhan being taken away by a kelpie or falling into the marsh. He did not want to think about it anymore.

Part of her felt relieved when her dropping the situation and leaving it behind caused him to as well. She didn't expect him to stay by her side. As it were, his loyalty to her was not something she took for granted. She knew, like so many others, it would last only until she had nothing left that he wanted. Even if Luhan never returned, Ladon was a dragon, he would eventually let enough time pass that he would forget. He would leave. And she would be left to her peace once again. If peace was ever going to be present. Right now, it certainly wasn't. Pain wracked her body as she moved, greater than any she had been in before. It was will that kept her moving, and the need to be within shelter before midnight came and will-o-wisps began distracting her already distracted mind. At least, with her current size, Kelpies couldn't eat her so easily.
Her own mind wandered idly as she headed toward the cave she knew to be there. She had to find it, she had to get inside. For all of her words, she knew Ladon was right. Like this, she would be hunted. The research to learn how to turn herself back to her given form had to begin now, or she would be stuck like this long enough that she would truly learn what it was that Ladon feared so about being hunting.
She knew he walked along side her, and she kept her pace slow, partly to accommodate his smaller form, and partly because the pain of her joints protesting. Her wings shuffled uncomfortably, and she knew that in the morning, the power of this form would be outweighed by the pain and the discomfort of not being herself. It took her a few minutes before she realized that Ladon had asked her a question, and she looked at him with eyes starting to glaze over with exhaustion.
Despite that, her mind reached swiftly, and gave him an answer. Her tongue felt thick as she spoke though. "I need someone who nobody will care if they go missing. A woman, and preferably a mage, though simply a woman is acceptable." Her teeth grit as her wings scraped against a couple trees, the cave looming up ahead. "I also am now looking for those who are willing to serve. General labor, and a decent cook. It's time that I cleared my schedule to allow more time for my research. If you cannot find anything else, an orphan will do. One who will learn quickly without being beaten." The last one rolled off her tongue, surprising, for a moment, even her. Her lips wrinkled up in an expression she didn't know how to identify, but Ladon would be able to recognize draconic frustration. She had let too much slip tonight, and she clenched her teeth to prevent herself from oversharing even more.
As they came up to the cave, she paused, looking at him. "Take the horse. It's not as though I'll have need anytime soon, and the beast needs to be out of its stall. I cannot fit inside the door to care for it." Granted, the horse she spoke of wasn't quite a horse anymore. But, it was close enough and retained it's training and mostly docile attitude. With that, she slid into the darkness, which lasted only for a few moments before a soft white mage-light came into being. Her multi-colored head turned to look at Ladon once more, sparks in her eyes of red, yellow and a deep thoughtful blue.

A woman? An odd request, a rather unusual, but dangerous one. This would be the first time that Ladon would actually go out in search of an innocent. But... he didn't care about that now. "Understood," he nodded darkly, knowing that he would bring about this task without any questions asked. If it was a woman she sought for, a mage preferably, then he would go out and seek just that. And he knew where he could find someone where they wouldn't mind going missing. Cendra City. The heart of Oedir. The conglomeration of all races, but there were many that lived in poverty. Those that were uncared for, and if a rogue mage just happened to be there... then it would be perfect. However, the situation on its own would be a tricky one, he would be fortunate enough if he could get away with just one woman of any sort going unnoticed. Likewise he would try to search for a mage, but if it came to the worst, and if he couldn't find one, maybe another magical race would do. If he remembered correctly, the elves lived there in far worse conditions, with their own communes and such. If anything he could head there and lay low. But, he was certain that he could get away with one person anyway. Though as she asked for orphans and many more servants, he contained a sigh. He would be lucky enough to not be caught with one. He couldn't collect a line of people as he went away from Cendra. No, he would have to bring her back her woman then go back to fetch the others.
He would take her horse at first dawn. Ladon had already planned to set out the next morning. She need not worry for her mount, for he had already taken care of it while she was away. Along with the rest of the lair that needed attention. He just needed a distraction, anything to bring off his mind of Luhan.
