I've wasted time, I've wasted breath He rode upon the mare up through the grasslands. "Her house should be just up ahead." he told her. It was weird riding her since well she was definitely not an equine but a shifter. That felt like to him he was taking advantage of her when in reality he really wasn't. she allowed this and that was something he had to keep telling himself. However, he was probably about as anxious to get off of her as she was. The ride was primarily in silence since he didn't know what to say or even how to say it. To be honest he was afraid he would say something wrong and she would throw him. So to be on the safe side he decided that as little conversation as possible was the better idea. Once the house was coming into view and she allowed him, he hopped off. A frown touched his face as he looked upon the disaster that laid before him. "Shit..." he moved from Jema's side and headed closer to the burned ranch.
Everything was destroyed.
It looked like it happened a day or two ago from the way it smelt and the way the wood still held a little bit of smoke in places. Breathing through his nose, he was about to talk to Jema before he saw a figure moving among the debris. Green eyes narrowed a bit as he walked forward towards them only to spy it was Solara. "Hey, Solara." He jogged a little towards her stepping over some of the mess and stood still not daring to go much further. Once she was close enough his brows furrowed. "Firstly, you okay? And what the hell happened?" Obviously it burnt down but that wasn't his question. His question was why it happened.

Jema instinctively shied away from the smell of smoke. As soon as Enzo was off her back she moved off down the road a little ways with a nervous whinny. Lingering within sight but not close enough to feel in danger. Solara hadn't spoken to her half brother since that day months ago. Thier meeting had been odd. She hadn't really been sure how to feel about a sibling. But now seeing him jogging toward her she felt a welcome surge of happiness. Someone familiar among the ashes. She had been picking through the rubble in hopes of finding more of her belongings when her brother had appeared out of thin air.
"I'm fine." She said quickly, waving off his concern for her. At the mention of her ranch she wasn't entirely sure what to say. She wasn't even certain who or why she had been attacked. She pushed her sooty fingers through her hair and shook her head with a sigh. "I don't really know. I was asleep when they attacked. But they killed all my workers, stole my horse, and set it all aflame. I'm still trying to get answers...and track my horses down." Her lips turned down in the corners but she was quick to push the negative away. She could get through this. She always kept moving, no matter what.
"Did something bring you out this way, Enzo? Its been a few months..."

In a typical woman style, Solara brushed off his concern. It was irritating how clean they could do that. Simply brush it off in a no fuss no worry type fashion when clearly there was something he needed to fuss over for. He narrowed his eyes for a moment as he listened to her explain that she was asleep. "Glad you woke up in time then." he said. His eyes shifted from her and back towards the destroyed house. Who on earth would want to do that to her though? As far as he was aware of Solara didn't really bug anyone. She kept to herself and seemingly only did business work with the people who did visit her or so he assumed. She didn't really seem like the type of gal who would go floosing around. She was old school from what he could tell from the recent interactions he once had. "Uh yeah, sorry. I have been out of work over an.... incident." A frown touched his lips a bit. "However I seem to have gained myself a friend who is in need and I was going to see if you could help me with some clothing for her but well.." he waved his hand towards the mess behind her. "You are in about as much of a predicament as I am in."
He turned to look over his shoulder towards Jema who was no longer right behind him but a bit away. "That's her. her name is jema she is a shifter but.... extremely shy. I will explain the story later." he said. It was complicated for him right now as he was still trying to piece everything together. "SHe's just had a hard life from what I can tell."

A wry smile came to her lips. "Well yes, they made sure I woke up.." Her voice drifted away for a moment as she remembered that night. The terror to waking up to some stranger staring down at her. Being shoved and hit. The weight of the sword against her chest before Connor had saved her from a rather untimely death. Her dark eyes appeared far away and her brows narrowed but she hurried to rein herself back in and push the depressing thoughts away. She quickly picked up on her brother's words, a distraction from her own thoughts.
"An incident?" She repeated. Looking over his shoulder and down the dirt road where a gray horse could be seen pacing back and forth nervously. "I have a change of clothing I brought along just in case I needed it. You-your friend is welcome to it." A horse shifter? She couldn't say she had ever encountered one but the idea was intriguing. She didn't push any further questions when Enzo said he would delve into it all later. She just nodded and turned back to the rubble that was her home.
"Well then...if you're still between jobs I could use some help here...and I'll need a trainer once I get rebuilt. I cant pay a lot right now given the situation but if you will help me with this mess and getting started again I will pay you what I can."

When she repeated what he said, Enzo just stared at her for a moment with bright jade eyes. There was a tiny bit of a flame behind them. His thoughts on the matter had slowly started to turn sour on the situation. The longer Branwen avoided him the more his mind was beginning to concoct that she had done it on purpose. That in some spiteful way she wanted him to suffer as miserably as she was. Still, he wouldn’t talk about that unless Solara honestly wanted to know. He wouldn’t keep it from her not since he was in such a dire need of help himself and from the looks of it she could use his help as much as he could use hers. ”Another story for another time, methinks.” he answered carefully. His eyes narrowed for a moment.
At the mention of actually having clothes his brows rose. ”That would be great.” he offered her a small smile. His eyes wandered once more before he looked over his shoulder at the pacing horse now as Solara began talking. ”Any help is better than none, believe me. I will do all that I can to help you in return, Solara. I really appreciate it.” He looked back at his sister for a moment his expression soft and showing a bunch of appreciation. ”I will go see if I can get her to calm down…” She was worrying herself and he hoped she would listen to reason but she had been a horse for so long she probably would be stuck in that mode.
Approaching the mare carefully he called to her. ”Hey Jema. It’s okay.” He said. ”The fire is gone and been gone for a while. You are alright.” He lifted a hand in a sort of distraction manner attempting to draw her attention back to him. ”My sister, Solara, Remember? She said she has some clothing you are welcome to. We are going to stay here for a little bit. I’m going to help her sort through this mess and work on getting stuff rebuilt with her.” He hoped his voice was enough to break through her panic. ”I wouldn’t lead you into something dangerous. I should have proved that much so far.”

Solara studied her brother, the strange expression on his face but slowly nodded. When he turned to go to the shifter she headed toward her own saddlebags to locate her clothing. Jema was nervous. The smell of smoke in her nose was stifling and sent warning straight to her brain. Realistically she could see that the fire was out. That it was only the burning embers that remained. But another time, another day, another rider. She could remember how the fire had licked at her long speckled limbs. How the smoke had burned her eyes until tears ran down her face. And the way his spurs bad bit painfully into her sides. His unrelenting urge to charge on, through the fire, through the blades that bit at her flesh. It was the reason her entire family line had been enslaved during war times. A werebeast was hard to kill.
Jema didn't even notice Enzo had walked up to her. Her one track mind spinning around and around with the memories. But when he rose his hand in an attempt to distract her she snorted and ducked her head, her equine body slinking low and to the side to push her several feet away with one movement. Trying to avoid a hand, a hit, a painful lashing that was likely to come. It always did. They hated fear...they all hated her fear. He began to speak again. Talking about his sister, about clothing. Saying that he wouldn't lead her into something dangerous. But the stench of death lingered here along with the smell of many horses. Flames and fire still hot and running rapid in her mind. "I cant." She replied telepathically. Her voice revealing the terror she felt. Even if Enzo had freed her she had known him less than a day. He couldn't conquer her demons in so little time.
She tossed her head and began to nervously paw at the ground, her head bobbing at the same time like an unhappy horse forced into a harness. Which she had been in the past. "I cant-the smoke-I remember-" Her voice was broken segments of thought that she couldn't hold onto long enough to covey. Her dark eyes closed as her head bobbed, lips pulled flush against her teeth. "I'm afraid." The admission sounded as if she were caving in, it came out in a breath that was lined with fear. "Don't punish me, Master Enzo. Please." Her speckled chest rose and fell rapidly with quick breaths, her large heart beating painfully hard in her chest. Panic...it was a hell of a thing.

The mare was being a little impossible and though he was doing his best to be understanding, it wasn’t something he could understand. He didn’t go through the trauma she had and because of his lack of ability to understand her fear – he found it frustrating. Green eyes watched as she paced back and forth obviously showing her unease. She was uncomfortable. Her muscles were tense and because of that, he wasn’t going to get anywhere near her. Shifter she may be but she was still a horse and he had been around them enough to know their size meant a lot even if their intelligence wasn’t quite so high. This also meant he was powerless in putting a sort of distraction down to get her out of the cycle she had stuck herself in unless of course, he wanted to get run over. That didn’t sound all that appealing to him so he remained where he was and stuck his hands down at his sides as she spoke in broken wording. A small frown touched his lips and he nodded his head. ”I am really trying to understand, Jema.” he said softly and as warm as possible to keep the frustration out from his voice. Things just seemed to be tumbling one after another and the man had yet to get a break from it. Maybe once she calms down and a game plan gets started with Solara perhaps he could get his break. If not he was sure his head might explode from the pressure of stress. ”I won’t punish you. I don't have a reason to but I need you to trust me.” he said. ”I can’t help you if you don’t trust me.”
His jaw tightened a little as he lowered his head a bit staring at his feet for a moment. ”I can keep you safe but you just got to let me do that first. I know you don’t know me all that well and that’s okay… but we got to start somewhere.” or else it would all be in vain. He had to keep his head above water to not just everyone else’s and he supposes that was where he had got his biggest lesson from Branwen. Not everyone is out to be as kind and understanding as he was. They didn’t give a rats ass if you sunk while keeping them afloat. It was sad to start to think that way but he didn’t see Bran out here trying to help him calm down the filly or help him fix his broken reputation as a wolf supporter. She high-tailed it and ran leaving him to gather the pieces. It was so frustrating. He wasn’t sure what to do other than help Solara at this point and maybe…. Maybe others could see it from his working with her. All he needed was that one person to break the cycle. That one person to change their mind and he prayed his sister was it…. Hopefully. ”So what do you say…”

He didn't understand, he truly didn't. But she could see how it would be hard. Immortals weren't seen like her kind, he couldn't. She wanted to trust him. She wanted so badly to just go sit with him and his sister and have a normal conversation. To laugh and joke around like normal people would do.
But Jema wasn't a normal person.
She felt like crying as her frustration with herself mounted. She just couldn't get over that wall. She felt that she had made large strides on this day but she had reached her brink. Her large brown eyes appeared very wet, unshed tears of frustration and anger. "Just yell for me when you leave..." She said quietly into his mind, her voice shaking and laced with the fear that plagued her. Her large head shook as if trying to get the memories to back away, to get the smell of smoke and burning flesh out of her nose. "I'm sorry." And with that the mare spun about, kicking up dust as she galloped away. Staying close enough that she could hear him call her but not close enough that the smell was overwhelming.
She was already beginning to wonder if this was a sign. A sign that even though she was now free that her demons would never truly release their hold on her. She might not be a slave to those people any longer, but to her own memories, she was still a puppet.
Solara had watched the little conversation from a short distance away. With the clothes folded over her arm she walked up to Enzo's side. She tipped back a flask that she had been holding and took a swallow before offering it to her brother. Not by speaking but by tapping his chest lightly with it. "Doesn't look like she's joining us." She remarked without malice. Her thin shoulders lifting in a slight shrug. "Want to fill me in on what you've been up to then, Enzo? Thats what people like us do right? Siblings?" Her lips twisted into a wry smile. "At least dad did one good thing in his useless life. Even if it was knocking up two unsuspecting women." An odd way to say she was glad she had a brother but there it was.

There was definitely a clear difference between the two of them and he spotted it almost immediately at her hesitation. He was a very calm person and liked to think he had the top patience for people however this was something he was entirely having a problem understanding. The fire was gone so what was there to be afraid of? No less the large mare gave her complete stand on the matter and simply denied his help. That was fine. She’d had enough excitement for the time being and much like any other person out there needed a break too. ”I understand…” he said though he didn’t fully. She apologized once more before kicking off and leaving. He stood there feeling frustration as he breathed through his nose. It was hopeless. He wasn’t sure why he kept helping people especially when he was the one usually getting kicked in the balls—figuratively speaking.
The sound of his sister off by his shoulder caused him to glance at her before taking the flask without a question. Calm that frustration before it gets misplaced. After a large swig and a harsh swallow, he held it for a moment. ”Nope. Smoke has her tail in a twist.” he said and did his best to not roll his eyes. No. He wouldn’t demean her fear just because he didn’t understand it. ”Poor girl. She’ll be around though and if she ever decides to change…. I suppose we will have the clothing for her.” he shrugged and took another swig, small this time, and then handed it back to her as she spoke once more.
He chuckled as she spoke. The warmth of the liquor in the flask was, of course, settle in on him causing him to soothe. ”Getting in unusual trouble.” he shrugged. ”If I tell you don’t kick me off your land like every other rancher has.” he stared at her though it was a joke he was being partially serious. ”Apparently I am a wolf supporter and for some reason, that is frowned upon.” He knew wolves were bad for hunting out horses and other livestock animals but just because he saved one that meant he appraised them all? ”This girl, I uh--…” he frowned searching for the right word. Friend maybe? No… she felt more than that. ”Well, this girl I had been close to was a wolf shifter. Anyway long story short she came to the place I had worked at and showed her ass to some ranchers.” in other words making a scene. ”They took it as her being a ‘mad wolf’ and were going to put her down. I stepped in and got trouble for it. Now since then, that ex-boss of mine has been running his mouth dragging my name in the ground. Can’t find a place to take my sorry ass so I have been out of a job.” He was very sour on the situation as was told by his voice that was slightly harsh in some places… lingering very hard on spiteful even. ”Who knew the ranching community was so tight-knit. You do something wrong on one property suddenly everyone accuses you like you are going to steal their animals and fed them to the wolves.”

Solara stared in the direction the mare had gone and gave a soft shrug in response to his words. "I suppose." She took her drink when he offered it back and took a drink before putting the cap back on it. She rolled the liquid around her tongue as he spoke. After the first little comment about kicking him off her land one of her brows rose curiously but she gave no verbal response. Well...someone was bitter. But as the story unraveled she could see why. She tapped her chin with a single pale finger.
"I could put a stop to it. Let them know you're my brother. I might not have a ranch any longer but my name still carries a lot of weight." She tilted her head in contemplation. "I would love to have you here to help me rebuild, train once I am. But if you prefer to go somewhere else I understand. Being bossed around by your sister might not be much fun." She grinned and turned to look at what was left of her home.
"I'll get the word out that you aren't bad news and anyone who has an issue with you can forget dealing with me or my stock in the future." Indeed what weight her name wouldn't hold the promise of her horse blood might. It was a risk of course. If Enzo was really up to no good. But as little as she knew of her brother she didn't see him as the type to do someone harm. "In exchange, you can help me clean up this rubble and...bury any bodies we run across." She thought she had dug everyone out and buried them already but it was hard to keep track when the faces we so unrecognizable.

That was what he was hoping for. A good word against the negative. That's all it would take but he didn’t have very many people to back him up on that despite all the good he had done. Despite all the hard work he did for those peoples horses. He tipped his head for a moment as she spoke and nodded his head. ”I really appreciate it if you did and as repayment and appreciation of my gratitude I will do all that I can to get you back up and runnin.” he said with a small smile. He chuckled again at what she said and shrugged his shoulders. ”I doubt it will be all that bad. If you don’t mind my hanging around and hopefully I won’t get into any more trouble.” though albeit that wasn’t intentional trouble. He didn’t really do anything wrong and nor did Bran. It was just a situation that was misread and a situation that got way more trouble than it should have been.
As she spoke once more, he nodded. ”alright then. Let’s get to it.” With that he took the flask from her one more time before turning and heading towards the rubble to begin sorting through. [thread end]
