Sammy made his way down to the water below. He had just finished ordering the last of the supplies for the ship, knowing that they would be leaving in two days. The ship was docked a few miles away and Sam had gotten sick of all the sand and sun and just wanted to see some waves. He guessed he wasn't used to how quiet the city was either. He always had seagulls up ahead or waves lapping at the boat to keep him distracted from his own thoughts. The familiar sounds of waves seemed to echo in his skull and his restless energy settled. He closed his eyes for a brief moment and let a wide smile stretch across his face. The ocean sounded more like home than his first home ever did.
As he looked down at the ground under his feet, be began to muse to himself. He honestly couldn’t tell the difference between the beach sand and the desert sand. He supposed it was the same thing, but he was so used to the vegetation that grew near the beach and the gentle change to the soft sand. He smiled softly to himself as he realised that if he had never left the Aelfmenn Kingdom, he wouldn’t have experienced nearly as many beaches. He’d be stuck married to some woman he didn’t love. He never would have been able to cherish Adriette and meet his tiny little babies. He didn’t regret a single moment of his life spent with them, despite their deaths.
His heart ached in time with his thoughts, but the smile hardly wavered. He had spent 10 years with the grief in his heart, and it only served to remind him to live in the moment and never take anyone for granted. He kicked up the sand and found that it wasn’t as coarse as the sand found a little more inland and that it was, in fact, soft. Sam loved the soft sand that signified lack of use, it made the little boy inside of him feel special. He stepped down into the softer sand, his feet pressing in deeply. He was used to the hard walks in the sand, so this did not deter him at all. He trudged down and sat on the ocean bank, looking out at the water.
He glanced around, noticing another pair of footsteps and a set of clothes nearby him. He frowned in puzzlement and looked out to the ocean. After a few moments of scanning, he noticed the bright, reflective glint of a merfolk’s tail. A small smile overtook the puzzled frown and he stood up, waving at the person. Company was almost always welcome in Sammy’s world, and right now he would appreciate a friendly voice.

Zander missed swimming. A lot. Though he spent most of his time on board a ship, rare were the times when he could truly leap into the waves and have some good old fun. Usually, it wouldn't take more than a minute before someone would be shouting for him, to haul or fetch this or that. Considering how slow his transformation was, rushing back to his duties was always a stressful ordeal.
So when he heard that they'd be moored at this desert for days, there was no end to his joy. Though he went and explored the legendary city, the merman was drawn back to where he belonged. The sea. Always the sea. The scortching heat didn't agree with him either, so the moment he got back to the shore, the young man didn't hesitate.
Racing towards the waves, he nearly forgot that he had clothes on and that transforming with them wouldn't be a pleasant thing. He skid to a stop, dancing out of the way of a wave as he discarded what meager clothes he had. A shirt, trousers and other things were dropped into a rough pile, and the merman rushed into the water, shrieking like an overgrown toddler in his joy.
He hardly made a few steps, before seawater met his skin and the young man flopped, legs instantly morphing back to greyish, shining fins. Not that he minded nearly planting his face into the sand, splashing some before he finally swam away into deeper water.
Though the desert was a dead, lifeless place with it's sand, the sea brimmed with life.
Zander spent some time among the sea creatures, occasionally coming up to the surface. Not for air, but just to check if anyone was looking for him or not. He'd already been scolded for losing track of time, and he tried hard not to make a habit of it.
Breaking the surface, his blue eyes instantly spotted someone standing on the shore. He didn't know the person, per say, then again he didn't know many people among the crew despite being with them for a while now. Still, he was supposed to take orders from all of them, from the members to the captain. So, when he saw the person waving, he swam towards the shore, fully expecting to have orders barked at him.
He halted in the water, just deep enough so his fin scraped lightly against the miniature sand dunes underneath the waves. Curious and at the same time worried his fun was over, Zander returned the wave, the motion a touch hesitant.
"Uh, hi!" The merman called, dodging a wave that tried to splash against the side of his face. "Does something need doing? I... kind of need a minute to get out." He said sheepishly.
The young man looked around, and found the shore to be a bore compared to what's under the waves. He turned his gaze back to the elf, and added. "The water is great, you know. You people really should enjoy it more while we're here!" He said, voice growing more enthusiastic.

Sammy's smiled stayed firm on his face as he watched the merman swim closer. He left the softer sand and stepped onto slightly wet sand that was a little more solid under his feet. He walked towards the shore, crouching just far enough away from the shore that the water only reached his toes once and a while. His eyes sparked with recognition and he tried to figure out why he knew the boy. The merman seemed to answer that question without Sam even voicing it, asking him if anything needed to be done. He was the new cabin boy! He refrained from hitting his own head in front of a younger crew member.
"No, no. I'm not asking you to get out. You're having too much fun for me to ask you to leave," he replied, still a little exasperated at himself. He had never been good at face recognition but the boy had worked with them for a week or so now. He hadn't interacted much with him as Sammy was fairly busy when the other pirates got antsy which happened the closer they got to shore. A few of the pirates had actually been confined to the ship, not knowing about the city and the ones who knew about it wanting to keep it that way. Sam tried to recall his name and he came up empty.
The next words that came from the merman's lips made Sam let loose a short bark laugh. "You people? You sound as if you don't belong with the rest of us pirates. I mean, I know you're the cabin boy but I have no doubt you'll fly through the ranks. What merman doesn't know his way around the ocean?" he was only half joking. He had seen the boy scurrying to do order after order on the ship. He knew from experience that this experience was either going to make or break the cabin boy. He had been a cabin boy twice in his life, and he had learned respect and hate at the same time. He wasn't obedient by nature but he did like to please people a little too much for his own good.
He realised that he hadn't responded to the rest of the invitation, "And yes. I was trying to consider whether I should swim or not. Might as well join you if you don't mind." Sammy glanced down at the shirt he had on and walked back to the bank which wasn't too far away. As he stripped off his shirt he continued the conversation, asking after the merman's name. "I'm sorry to say, but I've forgotten your name. I've been a bit busy lately and I don't think that Brigham formally introduced us," he turned back, not taking his shorts off. He usually wouldn't care but he had no clue how the boy would react to him swimming naked.
He began to wade into the water, "I'm Sammy by the way." he shook his head at himself again, turning his eyes to face the merman. The water was warm against his skin but it was cooler than the air.

"Oh, okay!" The merman replied gladly when the other told him he could stay. There was gratitude in the young man's tone, as he really hoped he could still swim some more. Zander missed his home deep under the sea, perhaps more than he realized. The hunger to be in the water kept swelling slowly over time, the home-sickness disguised as boredom and simply wanting to have some fun.
The elf laughed from the shore, making him pause uncertainly. Did he say something funny? Apparently, he did. On occasion, he had been known to say something that was apparently amusing, though he could never tell why, let alone if the laugh was sarcastic. Zander worried for a split second that he had insulted the fellow crew member somehow, but after a moment he realized from the other's tone that that was likely not the case. Still, embarrassment colored his cheeks a little at his social blunder, and he hurried to reply.
"Uh, no no. I meant, um. I am part of the crew, but you folks don't seem to want to slow down to enjoy the water, is all. There's too much rush." The young merman said, sheepishly. "Hauling things. Fetching things. Just because the captain doesn't need to rest doesn't mean we all don't, right?" He said, a small smile on his lips.
In a moment though, it seemed the other did want to have a swim, speaking and walking back to the bank. "Yes! I don't mind at all! Plenty of the ocean to share." Zander responded brightly. A wave decided right then to slap him in the face, and the merman sputtered for a moment in the water, burbling and half laughing.
Still, he didn't miss the crew member's introduction. "Hello, Sammy. I'm Zander! Pleased to meet you." He said with a slight grin, swimming a little closer. He still couldn't peg the other one, despite the name. He was sure he'd seen him around, but he had been barked at so often that he hardly had the time to get to know anyone.
Perhaps, now was an excellent opportunity for that to change, at least with this one fellow pirate. "So, where are you from? How did you get to become a pirate?"

Sammy smiled softly as he heard the merman’s sincere gratefulness. He raised an eyebrow as the other man began to stumble on his words, trying to correct himself. He laughed again at the merman’s joke and shook his head. This cabin boy seemed to have a good sense of humour but he was lucky that the captain wasn’t around or that Sammy wasn’t particularly defensive of their captain. He did have a point about the fact that the pirates were always rushing, “I would usually agree with you, but it’s my job to punish those that are slacking off and I can’t be seen consorting with the enemy.” He winked, oblivious to the fact that the other pirate had no idea who he was.
He waddled in, supressing his amusement as the merman was slapped in the face with a wave. It was such a ridiculous scene to witness that he couldn’t even laugh. “unfortunate,” he commented, tempted to just dive in the water. He could still converse with the merman if he used his air manipulation to imitate the mermaid kiss bubble. He pushed this idea out of his head as the merman introduced himself, and his smile grew wider. “Well met Zander.” Now that he knew the name of the cabin boy, conversations would be much easier and he would be able to acquire Zander’s assistance aboard the ship.
He was hip deep into the water when Zander asked about his past. Sammy winced and shrugged, “Some people don’t appreciate those kind of questions.” His voice was a little gruffer now, less amused and more defensive. Sam didn’t like talking about what had gotten him to this point. He cleared his throat, glancing at the merman and a little bit of guilt for being so negative. The poor cabin boy was just trying to be kind. The first mate waddled a little further in, his eyes closing in relaxation before he spoke. “I was on a merchant ship and I was kidnapped by a pirate ship. I suppose that was when I truly fell in love with being a pirate. A year or two after being kidnapped I was returned to land and decided that the pirate life was definitely for me, just not on that boat.”
There was a lot of information that Sammy was leaving out of his explanation. He didn’t talk about his deceased wife and children, nor the parents that he had abandoned in Aelfmenn. He didn’t think it was any of Zander’s business and he didn’t want to bring down his pleasant mood. Thinking and speaking of such things would put him in a foul, snappy mood and he didn’t like being like that. He blinked at the merman, “A lot of hard work got me to the place I am today. A lot of cleaned decks and injuries. Don’t forget that. You never stop learning, don’t forget that.”
He submerged himself into the sea, his chest now below the water, “And you? It is only fair that you answer the same questions.”
