Roland is a handsome young man. Standing at 6 feet, he is rather tall. He has a well-muscled physique, with arms of corded muscle and a hard abdomen. The left side of his chest bears a nasty scar which nearly killed him several years ago. Like many other sailors, he chooses not to cut his hair, leaving his wavy black locks around his shoulders, tied back with a cord, or kept in check by a head kerchief. Likewise, he rarely bothers shaving completely, though he does keep his goatee and mustache trimmed. He has chocolate brown eyes and a devilish grin.

As the navigator for the Hollow Heart, he gets paid rather well, and so can afford somewhat nicer clothes. However, his clothing is typical of other sailors; loose-fitting pants and shirts, as well as a long overcoat he wears when the weather is chill. He also always has a sword in a sheath at his belt.

Roland is a werebeast; his shifter form is that of a Peregrine falcon.

Roland is a crafty man. After fifty years of perfecting his craft, he is an excellent navigator and always manages to get the Hollow Heart where it's supposed to be going. He may seem like he is ambitious, but he has no will to become the captain or anything; he is content in his current position. However, if he were to become enormously wealthy all of a sudden, he might buy his own ship and crew and start his own pirating ring. But that is beside the point.

Roland is definitely a lady's man who is fully aware of his good looks; whenever the ship docks, he doesn't bother going to a brothel for easy prey. He enjoys the challenge of wooing a barmaid or someone else other than a prostitute. He is also known to be a notorious flirt with the females on board.

The man rarely takes anything seriously, other than his work, and when he isn't charting a new plan of action, he can be found in the crow's nest or joking with other members of the crew.

Roland can have a bit of a temper on him, particularly when he is inebriated. He is also arrogant and has a large ego, though it isn't easily bruised.

History:

Roland was born to two werebeast parents in a small clan of werebirds, living on the fringes of society. They carved a living out of the harsh world by training their young in assassin work as well as pickpocketing. The elders of the clan dealt with larger thievery. From the time he could walk, Roland was trained to have light fingers and quiet steps. His parents didn't want him to be trained in assassin work until he was older, so he became a very accomplished thief, stealing into the towns and cities of human society and stealing whatever he could find that would turn a profit. It wasn't an unpleasant life, and his training in pickpocketing helped him to support his family, even though he was never particularly close with them.

However, Roland's luck wasn't to last; even the greatest thieves can be caught. He had been stalking a wealthy noble in Cendra City, and was about to make his move when the noble turned and spoke to the thirteen year old, his guards holding the boy in place so that he was forced to stay and listen. The noble explained that he had been in Roland's position before and had since risen through the ranks of society. He told the boy that in punishment for trying to steal from him, and because he liked the boy's tenacity in such a bold act, he was going to take him in and train him in the arts of nobility. Roland had no choice but to follow and hope he could escape soon.

In time, Roland grew to enjoy living in the noble's home, though he still looked for any chance to escape. He got an education in several disciplines, most importantly navigation. The noble wished him to go on to work on ships instead of reverting back to his life of crime, and so gave him a skill that would make him very valuable to captains of ships. Roland proved to be a quick study in the skills of navigation.

As soon as the boy came of age, he set out into the world, first stopping at his family's old settlement. He found that they had all left and were nowhere to be found. He wasn't particularly miffed about losing his family, though he did miss the opportunity to do as he pleased. With nowhere left to go and with no other marketable skills, Roland set off in his career.

He first worked on a ship that was employed by the human king, transporting goods between ports. This job had few challenges in navigation; the waters were all well mapped and easy to navigate. It wasn't until several years later that Roland grew tired of this life. The thievery in his blood had been calling on him for some time, so he decided to quit his current job and advertise his skills in the taverns and wait to see what opportunities arose.

Soon enough, he got several offers on jobs, but one in particular stood out; a notorious ship called the Hollow Heart. He accepted immediately and has been with the ship for almost twenty years, loving every minute of it. He became very loyal to the previous captain, but now that he has disappeared, he has become loyal to Brigham.
