It was that time again; the time where Arista shed her tail in exchange for legs and human clothes and went on land to sell her wares to the various land walkers in Cendra City. It was one of her better places to sell as there were more people here; the small fishing villages rarely wanted to spend their money on frivolous shell jewelry, even from one as talented as Arista was. So, she always chose to set up shop around the busy marketplace in the city.
As soon as she was set up, she began looking around for customers, unwilling to shout her wares like some of the other salespeople here. Instead, she sat patiently behind her table and gave small smiles to those willing to look at her wares. As a long lived creature, she had had many decades to perfect her patience, and it came in handy today. Nobody seemed terribly interested in buying. No matter; she would stay for several days to get rid of her stock, then return to the sea.

| Sabe could have chosen to fly over the city. Soaring up among the clouds was easy. Landing, and the subsequent blending in, were the hard parts. So, she walked. It was a good day for a trip to market. Maybe she'd nick some food. Only cheap stuff, hardly worth what the vendors were asking. She was no thief. Or, maybe she'd just tell a few stories, sing some songs. If she felt like it, she'd dance a dance or two. Of course, she'd take all the coin that was offered to her. And then, there was that lovely fiddle she'd seen for sale at one of the stalls. She didn't know how to play, but she wanted it. She could learn, after all. There was plenty of time for that.
She strolled into the marketplace, glancing casually at the stalls to either side of her. She stopped mid-step when she saw the shell jewelry. Was that new? Or had she just not been paying attention? She looked up at the vendor and smiled. "These are lovely! Do you make them yourself?" She carefully picked up a piece and examined it closer. Truly, she had seen plenty of bits and baubles, but not quite so eye-catching that were made of shells and pearls. She just had to have something for her collection.
She put the piece down as carefully as she had picked it up. Then, she gingerly touched a nearby necklace. "How much for this one?" Now, she didn't have much, but she was sure she could find the coin for it. Even if she had to work all day. She was not about to steal from this vendor, who worked so hard to make her wares and didn't shout out like the others. |

The mermaid looked up as the woman approached, offering a friendly but guarded smile. "Welcome, I hope you find something to your liking." Keeping quiet for another moment, she studied the various pieces of jewelry. She had had a longer gap of time between this visit to land and the last one, and had subsequently made much more jewelry this time around. There were lovely mother-of-pearl earrings, clam-shell necklaces, pearl rings and bracelets, and other things. "Yes, all the jewelry is handmade by myself. I am a mermaid; makes it easy to find material to work with." She smiled slightly.
Arista watched the land-walker's hand as she perused the various pieces and smiled slightly when she picked up a certain necklace. "Ah, good choice. That one is one of my favorites. Ten gold." Arista wasn't so much interested in making money as she was seeing people interested in her work. In such a long life, it was important to have hobbies, and this was one of her favorites. She picked up a pair of earrings and lay them next to the necklace. "I also will put these in for half price; they look good with the necklace."

| Her smile widened. "A mermaid, are you? That's incredible!" Most of the merfolk she'd heard about were secretive of their true identities. Like Sabe herself, she supposed. At any rate, "I think I can afford ten gold, especially for something as lovely as this." And the mermaid was right; those earrings matched the necklace perfectly. "How much is the total with these beauties added in?" She couldn't help but fall for what was surely a marketing strategy.
Despite herself, she hardly knew anything about real wild ospreys, so she couldn't say if it was the bird in her that compelled Sabe to buy shiny things, or if that was just a personal problem. Strange, though, she usually collected rings, not necklaces. No matter. She knew what she wanted, and as long as that was true, she had nothing to fear. |
