Things had not been good for the royal family for a long time. On the outside they appeared to function in the capacity that a royal family should. Yet on the inside there was tension that most did not see or chose not to see. How could the queen continue to smile as if she was not forced to endure the harsh truth. Every time she saw the bastard son of her king she felt that pain deep inside - though with time it had dulled. Having to make the decision to mobilize against the plant monster alone showed her once more how alone she was. To be so long lived, surrounded by blood yet drowning on your own island in the middle of a sea.
Yet her light continued to shine for as long as Eolande and Cyril needed it to. Her rage and heartache was quieted by their very existence and it was either of her children she sought now. She wandered she castle halls dressed in a spectacular gown that she considered to be her casual clothing. Yet what was casual to her was a ball gown or even wedding attire for some. It was hard to imagine that no one was in the castle currently. Had they all left for the Battle Royale already? Surely it was not for a few more days? She remembered something vaguely about her daughter wishing to attend. Luiniel had no such interest in a blood sport but made sure to send extra guard. The humans were not known for keeping unwanted dangers out of their home.
Rounding a corner, she descended down some steps and moved out into the garden. The many plants and flowers reacted to the aura of light that surrounded her body. As she passed they all seemed to bend towards her as if to bask in the light and warmth she made. With naught else to do she pushed up the hem of her gown and sunk down onto her knees. Delicate hands went to work weeding the garden - a skill most did not know she possessed.
After a while in silent reflection she decided to send someone else to find Eolande. Motioning to one of the two elven maidens that saw to her needs she sent her with a simple request. Find Eolande and let her know her mother wished to speak with her in the Gardens.

Eolande had just been preparing for the Battle Royale. She and Cyril weren't leaving until the next day, but she liked to be prepared. In her curving penmanship, she had written a list of things she needed to bring for the expedition, and was packing them in her trunk. She wouldn't be riding in the carriage; it would hold her things and her brother's things, while they rode horseback. Eolande never minded an excuse to ride. That had been proven when she had ridden out in the forest, only to be confronted by Orin with his vague prophecies. She had met with her brothers, and had decided to attend the Battle in order to spend more time with Cyril, but she still feared she would not be able to pull the family together.
But her packing was soon interrupted by one of her mother's attendants, bidding her to visit the queen in the garden. Eolande quickly pulled on a nicer dress and rushed downstairs, always happy for an excuse to see her mother. Luiniel was one of the few people she actually trusted in the world. As she entered the garden, Eolande smiled to see her mother working in the planters. "Good morning, mother," she said. "You wanted to see me?"

It was always joy in the little things that kept her going some days. She could always expect more of the same from her garden. There was no tension, no secret treachery and no bureaucracy. The queen could be herself entirely here and that was a freeing thing when surrounded by a gilded prison. There were times she was filled with regret for her choices but she would never take it back. Just as she began to uproot a rather nasty weed foot steps approached her. Normally she would have stood so that no one saw her on her knees but she had a feeling it was Eolande. It was like another sense - she usually just happened to know when one of the children were nearby. " I trust that your preparations for the Battle Royale are all in order?" she asked with looking up. The question was asked with a smile in her voice, one could just tell. Eolande brought out the best in her when she started to slip into that emotionless mask of elven high society. " I did wish to see you. It has come to my attention that we have not spent time together in a while. Would you care for some tea and to humor your mother with a bit of conversation?" she asked.

Eolande brushed the skirt of her dress off as her mother began to speak with her, holding her hands behind her back. It was a shame she didn't spend more time with her mother, but she did have other things keeping her busy. She liked to ride her horse Baron in the forest, spend time embroidering, and visiting her various friends. But she felt guilty that she didn't seek her mother out more often; she was one of the few that she completely trusted.
"My preparations are going well, thank you. I am almost packed." She glanced around her at the bushes of flowers, then gave a small smile. "Sometimes I don't know what is appropriate to bring on a trip like this. I suppose I will figure it out soon enough."
The queen went on to invite Eolande to tea and for some conversation and Eolande grinned. "I would love to. And I am sorry we haven't spent time together as much recently."

The status of her preparations caused Luiniel to feel nervous. Her children travelling alone to the Emberi Kingdom set her on edge. None of the other races fully trusted the humans were not unaware of what was going to happen at the ball. Even still, it showed that she feared whoever committed the atrocity if she barred them from going. " More guards." she replied with both a laugh and her concern in her tone. " If it were not for Cyril going with you I would have asked you to reconsider. Things are becoming very.. complicated nowadays." she said. As she spoke her hands seemed busy at work as she clipped a few trimmings away from a small bush. Somewhere nearby the sound of her handmaiden carrying a heavy tray could be heard approaching. When Eolande apologized she frowned in response. It was not her fault for the long gap in which they had not spoken. " You have nothing to apologize for. Time is not something a member of the royal family has a lot of. It can be hard to find time for the things we love when our time is not our own." she said. There was a hint of sadness in her tone, though one could not truly guess the reason. " So, tell me, is there anything new I should know about? Something exciting, someone exciting?" she prodded gently hoping to start a conversation.

Eolande watched her mother's busy hands, then smiled as her mother suggested bringing more guards. Luiniel had right to be distrustful of the other races, and of leaving the elf kingdom. It seemed that the roads were getting dangerous, but she doubted that anything would happen; after all, Eolande was nothing if not an optimist. That was why it was strange how quiet and pensive she appeared to be. Orin had shaken her the other day, though she didn't like to think about it. Her meeting with her brothers seemed to have been for naught. Morighan was such an outsider, she feared he could not be recovered and truly come into the folds of the family. After all, it seemed clear after more thinking that Morighan was the dark sheep, perhaps the dark raven that had appeared in Orin's vision.
Eolande realized that she had fallen into deep thought as the maid approached with the tray of tea. "I am sure everything will be fine. I will get a few more guards, however, if it will make you feel better." She took on a slightly teasing smile, and followed the maid to a table nearby in the garden, sitting primly on the edge of the seat. Her mother pressed her for more conversation and she looked up, wondering if it would be safe to confide in her mother. Surely it would be? Your mother should be the one person you can trust in life. She gave a small sigh. "Well, actually, yes. I met the old lore keeper in the forest the other day when I was in the forest."

As most of her children were, Eolande too seemed stubborn. Though she gave ground on the idea of more guards she saw fit to make her disagreement known. There were times she was so kind that her children believed she was asking. This time it was more of a command given in a polite tone. The royal family would be protected so that no one could make ransom of one of it's members. When the tea arrived the queen moved to have a seat. Before doing so she would place her hands in a bowl of water sitting on the table to clean them. Once satisfied she would look to her daughter with a rather passive gaze. " It would do much to ease my mind in such times." Considering the lacking security of the human realm. At the mention of the old Lore Keeper her eyes narrowed slightly. He was a strange man that she had only had the pleasure of meeting a couple times. What could he have wanted with a member of the royal family now? " What did he say to you?" She demanded.

Eolande gazed at her mother as she confirmed she wished her to bring more guards, nodding slightly. Following proper protocol, Eolande also dipped her hands in the bowl before her before patting them dry on a cloth. Her mother seemed concerned about her meeting with Orin, and she kept her face carefully neutral as she was served some tea. She stalled for a moment, putting two cubes of sugar and some cream into the tea before deciding to answer. "He... he had a prophecy," she said softly, her hands stopping their work. "He had a prophecy he wished to relay to me."
