no one is perfect...
Today was one of those very rare days – nothing as momentous as a blue moon or a new harvest, but noteworthy in its own way – Tempest and her mother were home at the same time. This happened infrequently enough that they had a special routine when it did occur, but today, it seemed that work was more important. Though Tempest wouldn't usually have been irked by this – any opportunity to spend more time puzzling over the one mystery that mattered was immediately pounced on – but the reason she wasn't able to catch up with her mother was because of some prissy little goody two shoes that just had to pick up her new winter wardrobe. And if that wasn't bad enough, Tempest had been specifically asked to be nice to the little snit! She would have gone to her lab, if she had been given enough warning. As it was, though, she could hear the hooves approaching even as her mother finished off her diatribe.
”... and for heaven's sake, Tempest, would it hurt you to SMILE?”
Sometimes, all it took was a few words from her mother to make Tempest think that she was a youngster again, instead of a fully fledged and productive member of society. Instead of reacting as such, though, Tempest played right into her mother's hands and huffed loudly, rolling her eyes. For a second, she shot her mother the dirtiest look she could muster on such short notice, then she hoisted a completely insincere, sickly looking smile onto her face. ”Is this better?” She asked her mother sweetly, turning to leave the cottage without waiting for an answer. As soon as her back was turned, her scowl returned, barely lifting even when the wintery sunlight managed to filter through the trees for a few seconds. A blue and red crested warbler landed on her shoulder, trilling into her ear even before its feet touched down. With the back of her index finger, Tempest stroked the bird's chest as she responded in kind, a few soft whistles sending the bird back into the air. Well, it was official. Their esteemed guest was just around the corner, and Tempest slumped forlornly against the nearest tree.
She straightened up only as the horse pushed its nose through the line of trees that marked the perimeter of their property. Allowing herself one last sigh of resignation, Tempest shook her hair out of her eyes and managed to drag a slightly more believable smile onto her lips. It faltered slightly as her mother flitted so eagerly to the girl, but Tempest managed to keep a tenuous hold on it. Really, she wasn't sure why she was bothering. It wasn't as if either of them was going to pay any attention to her anyway. Her mother was far too besotted with Adelaide to even give her own daughter the time of day. But she stood semi-patiently, arms crossed, as her mother fawned over their guest.
”Adelaide! My dear, how was your trip?! You must come inside for some tea immediately!”
... no matter how hard they pretend they are.

Adelaide had chosen today to visit one of her favorite seamstresses, one that she had visited even before she had been engaged to the heir to the throne. She loved the woman's work, her fashionable eye, and her flair for helping Adelaide set trends with her various dresses. A definite bonus was the woman's hospitality and genuine friendliness towards the noble; she felt right at home in their cottage every time she visited. She had recently sent in an order for a few new dresses to add to her winter wardrobe to supplement the ones she already owned; it seemed that she would be in the public eye a lot more commonly, because she and Corvo were to be married within days as well as coronated. She couldn't lie; she was desperately nervous, though this seamstress always seemed to have a calming effect on her. A good reason to visit in person as any.
Lady snorted primly as they exited the forest. She had never liked the great tall trees pressing in around her, or the noises in the bushes from who knew what animals. She preferred open fields where she could see for hundreds of yards with no hindrance. Adelaide, similarly, liked open spaces more than enclosed ones, which was what made the castle seem all that more imposing.
As they approached the cottage, Adelaide smiled as she saw not the seamstress, but the daughter she so often spoke about. She raised a hand in greeting as the party stopped- she was accompanied by four guards- and cheerfully stated, "Good afternoon. Is Ms. Meadowlark here?" Her question was answered immediately as the woman came outside. "Madam Meadowlark!" she exclaimed happily, smiling. "My trip was uneventful, thankfully. And tea sounds marvelous, thank you. You must introduce me to this young woman as well," she said, dipping her head to Tempest with a friendly smile.

no one is perfect...
Of course the perfect little princess couldn't come alone. Tempest had forgotten about the damned honour guard that followed even the human royalty around. But then, the human royals thought themselves so far above the fae that they never bothered to call on her – they thought they had the better of it with their advances in medicine. She had almost forgotten the last time she had seen a member of their royal family, and even then it hadn't been to treat them – it had been in passing as she had been tending the eldest Elven prince.
In the interests of at least feigning politeness, Tempest raised her own hand in return, though she had to admit that her smile had turned slightly mocking. She noted with equal parts jealousy and disdain how easily Adelaide was seated on her horse, and that she hadn't even deigned to dismount before calling over. Perhaps that implied that she wasn't going to be staying long! Tempest's smile morphed into a relieved expression, until her mother had to come out and spoil everything with her invitation. Everyone knew that perfectly polite prisses never refused an offer of tea. Tempest let out a frustrated sigh as she took her eyes off her mother and her guest, and sized up the guards and their horses. Damn things were going to churn up her garden to no end – had no-one considered this?! Clearly not!
Her head snapped again to take in her mother preening and fawning as she gestured for Tempest to come closer. Reluctantly, she did so, but she remained on foot, and several feet away from any of the giant beasts that the humans seemed to ride so comfortably. When Magnolia realised that Tempest was going to come no closer, she tutted, shaking her head slightly as she turned yet another bright smile onto Adelaide. ”Adelaide, dear, this is my daughter, of course, Tempest. She has a day off from work, so will be joining us, if you have no objections.” Her mother at least had the decency to pretend to be concerned whether or not Adelaide would accept her daughter's attendance, but Tempest could see right through it. Frankly, Magnolia didn't care whether or not Tempest actually joined them – she was far too busy sucking up to the princess-to-be.
Tempest rolled her eyes again, but managed to utter the polite response. ”A pleasure to make your acquaintance.” She bit off the last word, a sarcastic utterance of her mother's delighted sounding 'dear'. She had a feeling that she was going to spend much of the next hour or so clenching her teeth. Hefting a sugary sweet smile onto her face as she fluttered up to rest at eye level with Adelaide, holding out one hand. ”Can I assist you inside, m'lady?” Only people that knew her well would have been able to detect the sarcasm, but her mother couldn't berate her in public for it without her own parenting skills being called into question. For all Adelaide and her guards knew, Tempest was the epitome of a perfect lady.

Adelaide barely caught the slightly mocking look Tempest had taken on but decided to ignore it. She was here for a fitting, after all. Her men's horses, and Lady as well, were very well behaved and stopped several feet before reaching the fae's garden. Adelaide dismounted soon after and followed Magnolia's gaze to Tempest again, giving a friendly smile and extending her hand in case the other woman wanted to shake it. "The pleasure is all mine," she replied, dipping her head. Adelaide gave a small laugh when Tempest offered to help her inside, shaking her head politely. "I thank you, but I believe I can manage on my own."
As she was led inside by her hostesses, she breathed lightly, giving a smile. "Your home is beautiful, Magnolia. Thank you for inviting me in."
