(Before the Battle Royale)
"Come on, Lady," urged the young noblewoman to her palomino horse. The horse, living up to her name, gave a prim little snort and walked on, outside of the city and onto the lonely road. Adelaide loved these rare moments alone; of course, she was never fully alone. A single guard from the castle, which had been assigned to trail her to keep her safe, was trailing dutifully behind the noblewoman, astride a bored-looking bay stallion. Nevertheless, these rides with her favorite creature in the world were relaxing and a way to get her mind off of court politics for a while.
The road was mostly empty, so Adelaide gave Lady her head and allowed her to trot carelessly, though Lady never went too fast for the noblewoman; she was too polite. Soon enough, it seemed like they were the only people in the world.

Khaal didn't bother guiding Kai. The werehorse knew exactly where they both should be going, and all the immortal had to do is sit in the saddle and relax. The journey was slow, so very slow for the man who can simply disappear from one corner of the world and appear in another. But on occasion, Khaal's magic didn't work and the spot he wanted to go to had to be visited manually. Other times, it was just a matter of visiting new places, too far away from the ones he could hop to.
To Khaal, any travel that lasted longer than a few minutes was a mind-numbing bore. Which is why it was handy to have a horse that he could actually converse with. Matter of fact, as the two went along the road, Khaal found himself singing an ancient song, one both of them knew from half a century ago. Every other line of it, the ancient man would pause to let the werehorse punctuate with a burr or a snort, and the he'd laugh and continue on. It perhaps painted a strange thing to see or hear, a man singing at his horse and laughing.
While he kept power running through his enchanted ring to read Kai's mind, he noticed a murmur of interference, distant but growing stronger. Then another joined it, and it made the immortal stop singing suddenly. He didn't know if the two minds they were headed towards heard them or not, but it didn't matter too much to the ancient man.
"Oooh." Khaal cooed softly with a grin. "We have company up ahead. Two." He held up two fingers, though the werehorse probably couldn't see it easily over his shoulder. "Let's go meet them, shall we?"
He didn't even have to say that much, Kai was already speeding up to a trot. Before long, the pair arrived at a crossroad, just in time to spot a young woman on a horse right around the corner. The other mind he'd sensed was nowhere to be seen, and though he was tempted he didn't look around for the person.
Keeping his will running through the signet ring so he could communicate with Kai, the ancient man beamed at the woman, giving her a friendly wave. Dressed as finely as a nobleman, with a dark blue cloak billowing off his shoulders, he was certain he wouldn't be pegged as dangerous right away.
"Greetings, milady! How are you this fine day, mmm?" Khaal all but purred at the woman.
((Mordekai will very likely join us. ^^ Hope that's okay.))

Adelaide looked up as she saw the horseman approaching. She shifted in her saddle to see if her guard was nearby, but she had drawn quite a bit ahead of him. No matter, her face wasn't known to all the other people in the kingdom. She was likely in no danger at all. She gave a hesitant smile as the man approached, dipping her head in greeting. "Very well, thank you. I hope I find you in a similar manner." She shifted again so that her posture was more erect. She hoped the guard would be about soon.
((Just fine <3 ))

Kai shifted under Khaal, his hooves tromping along the road at a steady pace at first. He knew that Khaal was keeping in contact with his mind, not that it was truly needed, most of the time. A steady stream of information went through his mind though, from where there were dandelions located to the river two miles away, to the wolf pack that had feasted three nights back off to the side of the road. His ears and nose were keen. But Khaal, as always, left the reins simply tied and draped over his neck, and his saddle had been placed carefully so as to not leave him with fur that got too ruffled and uncomfortable.
Along the road, Khaal began singing, and Kai tossed his head in approval at the chosen song. It was old, fallen out of fasion long ago, but his long life had allowed him to remember such things. As Khaal sang, his mental voice joined the man, a deep baritone. His pace shifted slightly, striding to the beat, and before long, he was punctuating lines with snorts or other noise, until Khaal stopped singing abruptly. One ear tilted backward to listen more carefully, and the stallion knew Khaal's intent before he even said to go meet them. He flagged his black and cream tail, his dapple coat shining as he sped up into a graceful, long legged trot.
He slowed at the crossroad that came up, catchign sight of a rider and a rather prim looking mare with fine lines at the corner. Khaal's hands were on the reins now, but it made no difference. Kai knew what he wanted. The dark dappled horse strode forward easily, and snorted softly in a greeting of his own, sniffing toward the mare as Khaal purred at the woman.
His thought drifted up to Khaal not because he had sent it, but because of the monitoring the immortal always did. -She's a pretty one, hm?- The statement could apply to mare and her rider.

Khaal smiled softly, a subtle chuckle bubbling in his chest when Kai's thoughts filtered into his head. The noblewoman before him certainly was a sight, though by the actions of the werehorse underneath him, the mare was interesting as well. Not that he could judge that with his very human senses. He'd just have to trust Kai on that one.
He focused on the woman instead, noting her hesitant smile, and the way she shifted to make herself, if not more threatening, then at least look like prey a little less. The ancient man kept his easy smile and gave the woman a light bow from the waist.
"Well, I must say my day has suddenly improved." Khaal jested lightly before putting a hand to his chest in an elegant motion. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Khaalius Sandrus the first."
"And this is Kai." A hand went to pat the werehorse's side at his words. "A pleasure to meet you."

Lady pulled up short when the stallion approached her, feeling that something wasn't quite right about him. She graciously allowed him to inspect her but kept her distance. Adelaide, on the other hand, gave a smile to the nobleman before her. "I am sure the pleasure is all mine, Khaalius. Adelaide is my name. Adelaide Venture," she said smoothly, feeling that it would be foolish to reveal her true name to this stranger just yet. Her guard would surely be along soon, but for now, she took the precautions necessary.
"On your way into the city, I presume?"

As always, Khaal's contact with Kai's mind left a slough of information constantly running. Dogs had come through, five of them, earlier. A hawk screeched in the distance over its kill. Sparrows sang off to the right , several feet into the forested area. The ground under his hooves had an odd scent... Snake. A snake had passed through the area. And the scent of the mare was half teasing, leaving the stallion arching his neck in the manner that horses did to show off. But more so, that spot that Khaal had just patted now itched. Would he please scratch there?
He flicked one ear back to listen to Khaal as he spoke, the other forward to listen to the woman upon the mare. The pair suited each other, he supposed. Prim, delicate palfrey, and prim, delicate looking young lady. Perhaps such a thing often happened. He and Khaal, after all, suited each other as well. Both were well built, but a better balance for speed and endurance rather than purely muscle and brawn. It made them a formidable pair. His thought drifted up to Khaal, this one a direct thought. -You think someone would pay ransom for the pretty face over there?-

Khaal leaned forward a little, interest evident in his blue eyes as the young lady spoke. In a seemingly idle motion, the ancient man scratched Kai's side as requested, and then gave him three pats to indicate a 'maybe' to his asked question. All the while, he kept a pleasant smile upon his face, giving the woman a light humm.
It was far too early to tell if the woman would be someone worthy of kidnapping. Khaal wasn't usually a greedy fellow, being able to steal or buy whatever he pleased, but the thrill of stealing someone's freedom does get to him occasionally. It was just a matter of how fun doing such a thing to this woman would be, all the while weighing the risk of it against the decision.
So far, the woman didn't seem like someone of high station, as he couldn't recognize the name. Still, he wasn't much into politics these days, especially human ones. The poor creatures come and go so fast, remembering their names seems almost pointless.
"Actually, we are just out for a bit of a ride, Adelaide." Khaal responded to her smoothly with a nod. Though it might be taken as odd to adress both himself and Kai as he just did, the ancient man found it sometimes painted him in a very good, nature-loving light.
"The day just seemed perfect for it. Are you going to the city yourself, milady?" Khaal asked, tone mildly curious. He could still feel the other mind nearby, and though he couldn't tell who it was, the woman's subtle uneasiness implied a few things.
"Adelaide," Khaal spoke, tone soft and worried. "...is everything alright?"

Lady snorted slightly as she saw the strange stallion trying to show off. She primly lifted her head and took a step back to widen the space between them. Adelaide, accordingly, took a firmer hand on her reins; Lady didn't usually try to move without Adelaide prompting her; she felt a certain uneasiness that came with the animal's intuition. Perhaps she sensed something Adelaide didn't? The woman managed to keep her concern off her face, for the most part, and gave a aristocratic smile to the man before her. "I am also only out for a ride. I will be heading back to the city momentarily."
It seemed the man had noticed her concern, though, and she felt a pang of nervousness shoot through her stomach as he asked her if everything was alright. "Of course," she responded, glancing over her shoulder in search of her guard. She wasn't the best at lying.

Kai pawed at the ground, shifting his weight around and dancing, much like a restless stallion of the normal variety might. Again the thought drifted up to Khaal. -She's definitely nervous. Maybe she's wandered too far from her escort. What fun can we have before they get here?- Tossing his head, he let out a snort of laughter, though he knew that Adelaide wouldn't understand it as laughter. Khaal would, however. After a moment, he shook himself slightly, sending his mane flicking back and forth before he focused his warm brown gaze upon Adelaide and her mare.
His words to Khaal were crude. -You take one, I'll take the other, eh?- Amusement filled his words.
