Mages
From the beginning....
No one really knows how magic came about within the mages’ genes. It is once believed that mages were once humans with an affinity for magic, although none do not know when that had began. During the wars, the mages were always the most feared, their magical abilities often superior to those of the other races. However, no kingdom accepted such a race, not even the humans that feared their dangerous ability. They were feared, and even persecuted in some places. It was then the mages decided to rule themselves, in a school called Lledrith located in the midst of the Sakari Wildes so that they could train their abilities and learn to harness them, protecting themselves from the war that took place on the outside. It acted as a refuge, however it was only for mages. When the treaty came about, the mages were hesitant to join since it came from the very races that did not accept them. However, deciding that peace was a goal that should be achieved, they had agreed. But the other races had to make sure that their magic did not go out of control, and so their agreements also included restrictions on the mages if they wanted to join the alliance. The deal was that they would be accepted among the races, as long as the school was strict and taught all mages how to properly harness their magic and keep the students there until they were adults, and any young mages found outside the school must be brought there for teaching. The mages agreed to these terms, and the school and mages had flourished since then. But some mages did not like to be under such strict control, and a group branched off to go live secretly in a lost city in the wilds, the Hidden City of Mirthal. Mages of the school soon learned of the place, but could never find out where they were hiding.
Majority of the mages live in Lledrith School, located in the wilds. It is a grand school, and extends to even a city around it behind its walls. It is built like a fortress, as it had served its purpose in the war. The architecture of the school is very nice since its reestablishment after the war ended. The school has a typical hierarchy, as students learn and when they graduate they are free to leave. There is a tracker that tries to find any runaway students or ones that are born outside the school and brings them there. There are four elemental masters of the school, ones that rule each element but are under one Great Headmaster. They are in charge of the school and its administration. The students are housed in the school, and many events happen here, such as magical tournaments, sports and festivals. All mages have magic that varies in ability, but it usually must be learned in order for it to be stronger. Most mages learn about religion in school, but that does not mean all of them are religious. They learn the basic things in their younger years, including normal subjects that aren’t related to magic. Oftentimes, they will go on field trips to Mere en Watervalle and older mages go there to work on research.
Within the Hidden City of Mirthal, it is hidden in the Wilds, untouched by mages and their restrictive nature. The mages that live here consider this a safe haven for those who do not wish to be under the control of the school, however this also attracts many who wish to practice dangerous magic. They live in a communal life within the houses built within the trees, long bridges connecting their ever-growing city. It is led by a leader, the founder of the city that started it all, and watches over it to make sure it won’t be found by the mages of the school. There are many spies that often work against the school, telling them what the school knows about them and their location. Here there are no lessons, no restrictions on what mages can do with their magic. They are also free to roam the lands and come back freely.
Appearance
Mages look just like humans, so it is pretty hard to tell the difference. The only characteristic that distinguishes a mage is their magical mark. It looks like a tattoo, and can be anywhere on their body. It relates to what kind of magic they have, almost always giving away their abilities if one was able to tell. Most mages at the school wear robes although others usually do not.
Magic
Mages have a wide variety of abilities that range across the whole magical spectrum. From elemental magic to the obscure, the magic that mages possess vary. However, the kind of magic they have is inherited from somewhere down the lines of their family, mostly from their parents or grandparents. While mages can perform many simple spells, they have one main magical ability. When they are young the magic is often times hard to control, and by studying and practicing they eventually learn to harness it well. This is why some consider the school mages to be stronger than the ones from the lost city. Magic also gets stronger with age, along with continued practice and study. All mages are born with a mark related to their magical ability. It can be anywhere on their body and it looks like a tattoo.
