It had been nearly a day since Larkin had seen Felix but it wasn't something that concerned her. She had become accustomed to his disappearances back in the beginning. But he always returned. Fall had taken its hold and Larkin was content to hide indoors away from the chill. She was sitting cross-legged on a rug in front of the fire that had been started by Felix the night before. She would slip a small piece of wood into the fireplace when it seemed a little low. She was reading a book that had been left in the home by its previous occupants and munching on a leftover sweet roll from when they had ventured into the city. The berry goo on the inside appeasing the craving she had been having perfectly.
She turned the page of the book and pushed an ivory lock behind her ear. Blue eyes focused intently on the words on the aging pages. It was the sound of footsteps on the porch that pulled her from the world of fantasy. She turned the book over and lay it pages down so that she didn't lose her page. Her baked desert still in hand she made her way to the door and peeked tentatively through the moth eaten curtains. Lock the doors he said. He always said that. She hadn't listened so well back in the woods. Here though, closer to the city, she was attempting to.
Seeing Felix's familiar handsome face she immediately smiled and twisted the mechanism that would hold the door in place. She twisted the knob and tugged it open with a groan of the aging wood. "Hey!" She greeted him happily. Her thin arms immediately wrapping around his neck in a hug. "Where have you-" A familiar smell made the lithe woman pause, she didn't pull away but tried to place the scent. She had smelled it strongly once before...but it felt like so long ago.

He found himself taking his sweet time back to where he had left Larkin. He hadn’t even really meant to be gone that long but luckily she wouldn’t get too worried unless it was closing in on more than just a day. His chest was hurting. He wasn’t sure if it was because of what he was about to do or perhaps because he just slept wrong but he found himself slipping his hand into his jacket and rubbing his chest. He drug his feet along as he walked towards the cabin that held the little rabbit.
His little rabbit.
Since the night he had gotten chased into the caverns he knew he couldn’t have led them back here. Larkin didn’t need that type of issue again nor did she need him. She needed to be happy elsewhere and if he stayed with her it was likely going to end badly for her. Aside from that, he needed to stop running from his mate. He needed to man up and do what was right and running from Lucia wasn’t…. Even if the inevitable thing was going to happen. His wolf didn’t like Lucia and she was in danger when they were together not like Larkin. Larkin only met the wolf once and that was because of the scent of blood but since then the wolf never truly bothered with her. Maybe he knew something he didn’t nor willing to admit.
He waited until she unlocked the doors and once he was inside she flung herself to him and hugged him tightly. He returned it but before he could say anything she loosened obviously noticing a scent on him. Her question got him furrowing his brows. A cheater. He was branded a cheater without even trying to be one. ”Lucia…My mate remember?” he started. He fidgeted nervously feeling awkward. He didn’t like being in this position but he told Lucia he would cut ties as long as she wouldn’t bed anyone else. They were going to behave and do it right this time. ”She’s alive.” His words was careful as he stared at her with a worried gaze. He knew she could smell it on him. There was no denying the sin that clung to his skin. ”When I left here I got chased back into Cendra and down into a ruin. I ended up losing them so they won’t end up here but I had run into her and….” he sighed and closed his eyes and stepped away from her. It had been easy to block himself off from people. He had done it so many times but Larkin was different. She always had been. She had been different from the start and he didn’t know what it was about her but it was something he wanted to cling to. ”I'm sorry Larkin…”
He felt terrible.

His mate? "Oh." She managed. Not knowing what to say. As far as she knew his mate was dead. Her large blue eyes searched his face as she continued the story. A story that made her chest flutter nervously. "And?" She repeated. Shaking her head when he apologized. He couldn't just say sorry without telling her what he had done. But she could feel it....something was different with him. The other woman's scent clung to his skin like an exotic perfume. There was an emotional wall that had been erected between them in a single day and she hadn't even been aware it was happening. Her thin arms slowly released him. A small step back breaking their contact.
"...why are you sorry?" She asked him softly. How had this even happened? It felt like a horrible twisted dream. Larkin reached up to push her hair behind her ears and forced herself to look up at him. "But at least you don't have to feel guilty now...about killing her. Because shes not dead. I'm happy for you I know you-" But she couldn't keep speaking. The words broke in her throat and a soft sound slipped from Larkin as she turned away from him. Her pastry that she had been so preoccupied with was sat down carelessly on the table as she passed it.
"You...don't want me now. That's what you came to tell me, isn't it?" She bit her lip and one of her hands curled around her very tiny stomach. She looked over her shoulder to Felix, the man she loved more than anyone and forced herself to smile. "I'm happy you found her." And she was, happy for him. She just wished it didn't make her feel like she was falling apart.

He had to shut down, he had to go numb but looking at her face as she seemed to be jumping between knowing and not knowing was painful. He knew it would click into place and he wouldn't have to say a word all she had to do was let it set in for a moment and breathe. All the answers laid there. His blue eyes lowered now as she rambled on for a moment and then caught herself with the realization again. "yeah... I know." he said though his tone sounded defeated. "but its a chance to start over on what we both screwed up." meaning him and Lucia at least. He had been so sure he had murdered her and he knew it would have been easy from there to have just moved on. Moved on with Larkin and repent and heal himself but.... no. The goddess had a cruel way of shoving his destiny in his face. Now that he knew Lucia was back it would be far harder than to turn from her it was the first time and they ended up back in front of one another. He tried to end it. He tried to let that damn cat go and he couldn't do it.
He was weak.
She said she was happy for him and he knew that wasn't a lie. Larkin only ever wanted his happiness even if she couldn't have her own. She was such a selfless creature and so opposite of him. He bit on to his lip as he looked up at her unsure of what else to say as she pretty much said it for him. "in so many words.... sure." It stung for it to come out that way but what could he have said? To soften the blow and provide false hope or perhaps back out of his word because seeing her crushed was making him feel like the lowest person on earth? He didn't mean to fall for either one of them. He didn't mean to be the reason to cause Larkin so much harm as he had invested himself into putting everything he had into protecting her. He killed-- or tried to kill -- Lucia for her but he supposed maybe not she was in danger of him too maybe not like Lucia.... but her heart sure was.

"in so many words.... sure." She flinched. She had known the words were coming but perhaps expected they would be a little padded, a little more careful. But it felt like he didn't care. She knew that it wasn't true, however. Felix was a good person. He had to have a reason for saying things the way he did. But still, it stung. She turned away, a small nod the only indication she had heard. The tears came then. She wasn't aware they had even started until they fell from her porcelain cheeks down onto the skin of her chest. She knelt down to get her book with shaking fingers. Moving then to get her coat that she would slide into, all the while eerily quiet as her tears fell. Her boots came next and she had to sit down to get them on, bending double made her stomach hurt.
She dusted off her skirt and took a last look around the place she had thought would be her home. For one happy day. She wasn't entirely sure where she would go. Back to Aelfmenn maybe....or perhaps she could even get a job in one of the nearby towns. But one thing she was sure of was that her life was going to feel very bleak and dark without Felix in it. She didn't even want to think about how she would manage with a baby. At least she still had time to work on it.
Larkin slowly moved toward the door where Felix stood, her large blue eyes finally turning up to meet his own. "It is ok, Felix." She said in her own odd way and tried to wipe away her tears with shaking fingers. "You should be happy." She hesitated but suddenly wrapped her arms around his stomach to plaster herself against him in a powerful hug. Just as quickly as it happened she was pulling away and moving toward the door, her tears coming faster and her shoulders beginning to shake. "Thank you, for everything you've done for me. Maybe someday I can repay you." One last small forced smile was offered to him before she stepped outside, pulling the door softly shut behind her.
