Appearance:
Rothana’s beauty is often obscured by dirt, ash, or a dark cowl she often employs to keep her features hidden. She is 5’5”, weighs around 125 pounds, and has an athletic build. Her hair – which is often braided - is long and black. Her eyes are a deep brown but depending on her mood can go black and menacing.

[break]
She if often outfitted in the leather jerkins favored by rover bands that roam the river lands to the south and is known to be armed with twin rapiers and at least one dagger.

Personality:
Calculating is the word that comes to mind when describing Rothana. She is supremely cautious and quiet preferring to observe those around her over letting anyone know her feelings, motives, or opinions. When drawn into conversation she offers the minimal engagement dictated by civility. She is loath to engage in small talk in any form. If there is a weakness to exploit it would be her temper. Rothana can be quick to anger and never forgive a perceived slight. Her unbridled anger has brought her perilously close to ruin on more than one occasion and will most certainly be the cause of her demise.
[break]
[break]
She has few friends – or at least something that approaches what most consider friendship - and trust does not come easily. Her acquaintances are mostly business in nature and she prefers to keep them on those terms.

History:
Orphan, thief, fighter, spy, and would be assassin. I am these and depending on whom you ask much more. I am Rothana Ybarra and if you have spent any time at the Cendra City docks then then I wager you have heard tale of me and my crew. But with every story there is a beginning.
[break]
[break]
I hail from the port city of Cendra City. It is a hateful place filled with hateful people. My mother died when I was six bringing into this world my worthless brother. My father, worthless himself, was killed a few years later while unloading cargo from a merchant ship. He deserved much worse. Left behind was my younger brother, Giles, to provide food, shelter, and some semblance of security. Cendra City, in case you are uninitiated in its nature, is not the sort of place where charity and understanding are lent to anyone in need. Even children. It was a desperate time requiring desperate choices.
[break]
[break]
It was fortunate that I am both quick of foot and reflex as thievery – petty though it may have been – was really the only option we had for survival. Through my pilfering skills, I was able to keep us fed and safe for a several years. In the end my efforts did not prove to be wholly adequate. My brother – did I mention he was worthless? – thought himself a thief as well but unfortunate for poor Giles he was not very adept. His only reward for attempting to lift a noble’s fat money purse was a sword in the gut. Horrible way to die, really.
[break]
[break]
The good news was I didn’t have to do it myself. Free to worry only for my own well-being, I increased my thieving and pick pocketing until I was able to amass what I thought to be a tidy little fortune. With my ever-increasing wealth in mind I would daydream of buying a ship, hiring a crew, and sailing away to some unknown, distant land. Free to start anew I would buy a small farm, raise chickens and goats, and live out my days without want or care. It seems pretty silly looking back now.
[break]
[break]
As it turned out farming was not my future path. It did not take long for my thievery to capture the notice of a local guild – I didn’t even know there was such a thing – and on my way home one cold, misty evening I found myself bundled up and then delivered roughly to a cold, abandoned warehouse. My captor’s name was Danoc. He was the leader of the one of the most prominent thieves’ guilds in the City – The Silent Dawn – and apparently, I had been under their unwelcome gaze for some time. Bound up and a razor’s edge from being bled out he offered me a choice. Become rat food or join his guild. After a brief pause to consider I found the decision easy.
[break]
[break]
The guild took me in and trained me in their craft. I was a fast learner and soon found myself assigned to increasingly complex and lucrative jobs. My position and stature in the guild increased with each successful haul. In time the circumstances of my recruitment did not really seem to matter. I just belonged.
[break]
[break]
As I was getting comfortable with the guild and my place within it, Danoc called me in for a meeting where he introduced me to a dark, brooding man I had never seen before. His name was Bran and I was informed he was here to teach me the art of taking the life of another. It seemed my age, gender, and relative attractiveness can command a premium where such “jobs” require an agent that attracts little notice or scrutiny. Up to this point I thought the Silent Dawn made their fortune taking it from others. I was quickly relieved of that notion as I learned the real money was in contracts for murder and business was good. I was not sure I had it in me to kill but like so much of my life up to this point I seemed to have little say in the matter.
[break]
[break]
My training was constant and intense. Bran spent countless hours teaching me all the ways a person can be killed. Poisons, pressure points, and quick killing blows were all drilled into me. I learned how to make a killing a declarative act, an accident, or even a natural event. I focused on the material, the techniques, and the science but pondered far less on the act itself – at least in moral terms. After almost a year of intense training Bran declared I was ready for my first job. I knew he was right but I was not sure I would have the courage to see the action through. As it turned out we will never know – at least as it relates to the service if the guild – as my mettle failed and I made the hasty decision to leave town.
[break]
[break]
Today, I pay the bills by hiring out my services to protect local merchants and nobles along the various trade routes. I keep my distance from Cendra City know it is not safe for me there. This uprooted, shiftless life will do for now but I know there is something else out there that beckons.
