“He could really use your help! They’re very scared of losing stock after what happened.” Those words were what ultimately had caused Ymir to leave her travels nearby in favor of traveling toward the land of humans. The details that had come before them, however, were of a gruesome accident involving wolves and some young horse stock briefly left unattended in a pasture.... which may have also triggered the premature labor of a prized mare. The description had nearly made the mage want to cry, despite hearing about how the ranch hands had sought to treat the wounds on the foals and had sought to brace several legs broken in the conflict. The poor mare though? All of them she wanted to help. The likelihood of the animals being put down or succumbing to their injuries seemed great without some form of intervention. Perhaps a healer might have been more successful, but the issue, in this case, was the lack of knowledge of the whereabouts of one. Not to mention that might would be questionable in assisting with labor, if it proceeded for the mare. And so, in her kindness, and drawn toward the endeavor with the excitement of helping someone (especially a friend of a friend), she had gone.
Walking took longer than one might have liked in her journey to the horse farm, taking several hours from her previous location. Having been a teacher at the school for mages, teaching both magical control for students and advanced herbology, she had not until recently been in a bracket making coin sufficient to own such an animal no matter how much quicker it'd have made the journey. Well, truthfully that wasn't exactly the case anymore. It had been, prior to when she had been recruited to make small trips. Little things, really… Sitting in a bar in one of her unfamiliar forms, just to gather information. Paying people visits. It was really… harmless? For now at least. But it helped to pay the bills. Helped her make the money needed to venture outward from her quiet life in search of her family, and to explore what the world had to offer.
Adjusting her pack and shaking her dark tresses to soak in the breeze, she paused as she finally reached what seemed to be the destination described to her: a long, winding road with scattered, sparse trees, a fence, and ample grass pasture. Scuffing a foot in the dirt, rolling the ball of her boot a moment, she was just starting down the road when the most adorable sight she could’ve imagined was introduced by the sound of eager hoofbeats coming her way. The pony was the most beautiful golden color with a dark mane and legs, gallivanting along as though he were an overly large bumblebee.
Immediately grinning, the small squeak of joy that Ymir produced as the animal neared was what probably what alarmed the pony enough that it paused. That was enough of a break in its escape that she was able to extend a hand to grab it by the halter, which she immediately followed with a soothing coo and gentle pat to the neck. She loved animals and took such appreciation in the brief occurrence as she felt the silken strands of the pony's fur glide through her thin fingers. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived for the Mage.
As if on cue, however, the woman tilted her head upward as the sound of the pony’s pursuer seemed to follow from further up the road to the ranch. Squinting her eyes, they widened in recognition when she seemed to spy a man approaching. One of the stable hands? Calling out, waving the hand free of the pony's halter, she smiled a friendly smile. “Looks like he got away from you! No worries! I got him for you.”

We've all got light and dark inside us.What matters is the part we choose to act on.He definitely wasn't on his game. Actually the past few days he hadn't been on his game. After the massive zap to his head from his match up with Branwen, she had left his head flustered. It, of course, wasn't the type of flustered as someone might expect from forces of attraction. Sure she was a gorgeous woman but that wasn't what had gotten into his head. Quite the opposite. The night he had with her left him with a mighty zap to his head that left him so disoriented, he didn't know up from down. It had been weeks since he had that issue and he still had lingering side effects. He supposed it wasn't that unusual he was still having issues considering it had been bad enough blood came from his ear and not just his nose. Dizzy spells seemed to be what he worked with these days. Even his boss had noticed how faulty he was and demanded he not actually ride any horses until his head cleared up but breaking horses was what kept him from losing his mind and function. People were hard to work with because of that reason of accidentally using his power on them. Animals were the safest he could be around and let his guard down around.
That guard being down certainly wasn't all that great of an idea though. One of the geldings he had been working with broke loose. The golden palomino was quick to take that freedom and run with it. He knew he was quicker than Enzo and almost playfully he seemed to taunt the man who did just about everything but beg for him to come. The horse nickered and ate some of the wild green grass and plants and each time the immortal man grew close, he would quickly skitter away.
He was growing tired of the horse's shenanigans though and before he knew it he eventually lost sight of the creature as he headed down the trail. Enzo was dizzy. His world felt like it was zig zagging a little. Furrowing his brows he did his best to keep on a steady straight and narrow trail. He wasn't even sure at this point if the horse kept on the trail but he kept going and that was when he spotted two figures up ahead. One a tiny woman holding onto what looked like a smitten gelding. The horse didn't even look like he was trying to pull away from the tinier human perfectly content with being held onto. A small smile made its way upon his lips as she waved him down and he jogged a little in her direction. "Gosh, thanks!" he said. "He just whisked off from me." The rancher would be displeased when he finds out Enzo was no longer on the property or if he found out the horse escaped him. He would then be forced to take a break in which he really didn't want to. "How'd you get him?"

The man approached from the distance, looking perhaps a little ruffled in his pursuit of the horse, but hardly worse for wear. Minus the odd lilt every few steps, as if he had spun in a circle for a while before deciding to pursue the animal. That hardly seemed to impede him right then, however. At least, it didn’t seem as though the horse had injured him significant in seizing its escape if that was what happened. Which was good; she couldn’t imagine that dealing with the creatures would be easy all the time, regardless of how cute the wayward one she had snagged was.
Holding her grip firmly on the bridle, she watched as the horse flicked his tail with the arrival of his master, and absently stretched her fingers to scratch the underside of his jaw. At once, the animal's ears diverted from the approaching man, a foot even cocking as it seemed to take intense pleasure in the scratching. “I was coming because I was told my services might be useful here, and he just drifted on over to me. I like him. What’s his name?” Ymir’s smile was bright as she asked the last question before she seemed to at once realize that this man might not have awareness of the situation.
Her smile not fading, though her face seemed to express some small level of embarrassment, she quickly added, “Ah, sorry. I’m Ymir Bishop. I’m experienced with herbs and healing potions; I was told to look for Enzo regarding some injured horses that might benefit from some treatments?” Offering her free hand to shake, something the horse nickered in annoyance at, her pretty brown eyes settled on his face.

His name? Well that was a good question what in the world was the horse’s name? ”Uuhm…” His eyes wandered towards the halter she held onto and could see the glimmer of the silver name tag on the side of it. ”Dio.” he said after looking at it. It was an obvious bad sign since he couldn’t recall the horse’s name. Was his head that fogged? It was a bit bothersome to not be able to recall something so simple especially since this wasn’t the first time he had worked this horse. He supposed tomorrow would be a day he would call of and seek help from a healer. The only issue he had with this was he didn’t really want more magic floating around in his head.
The other question that was swirling around in his head was shortly answered. That made more sense as to why she was hanging around Mr. Roberts property. He really didn’t want to escort her off. She seemed pretty nice. ”That would be me.” he said with a grin. ”We have a couple horses who have some pretty nasty wounds you could take a look at and a mare… who has seemed to have fallen with a weird case of illness.” He stepped forward offering to take the halter off of her hands. ”I’m not sure if you can do anything with illness but I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to take a look? She’s lost a ton of weight, her fur dull but long?” one would think cushions. The disease in which usually strikes older horses and causes them to retain their winter like fur during the summer. However… he didn’t think that was what it was. It was… different somehow. ”We can head down the trail. It’s not that far.” He tipped his head for her to follow and with a couple of encouraging nudges and clicks to the gelding, he decided it best to move.
”So you some kind of veterinarian?” She did say she worked with herbs and healing potions but he wondered if it was primarily for animals. Or was it both? Or was this just a weird case she had taken on?

The hesitation he had in actually answering her question caused her to tilt her head. While in some ways she might’ve giggled had the situation been different, she couldn’t help but notice the briefly unfocused quality to his eyes and the pause itself. Those, coupled with the smoothness of his other responses, caused her to wonder if it wasn’t so much that he was dim or dumb. She wondered instead if he hadn’t been kicked in the head or something by the animal which had escaped from him. “Did Dio give you a knock?” Her smile was small. Had she less experiencing treating ill people, she might never have noticed the lack of focus to begin with. “I have some remedies that might help with that. Not magical, but you’d be surprised what nature can do. No charge, of course.” In a way, it was almost as if she’d read his mind. But, alas, she was oblivious to his internal struggles.
“Fancy that! I’m glad I found you so easily any way. What you’re describing was what Burnet had said. I think he’s a friend of yours also?” She allowed him to take the halter without resistance, practically bouncing as she sidestepped around to regard him more easily. “Anyways, yeah! I can take a look. I have some ideas on how to help.”
Stepping quickly at his tipped head, she was quickly eager to get on with helping, bounding several feet ahead despite not actually knowing their exact destination. Down the trail seemed… direct enough anyway. Her face reddened as she quickly tried to answer his question from walking ahead, turning to walk backward and very nearly stumbling. “Ah, no. I’m actually just a mage with a lot of dealings with herbs and the like. I’ve helped little tweetie birds, mice, and dogs before, maybe even a cat… So I think Burnet just thought I might have some talent to help with the horses too.. Plus I was nearby.”

It obviously caught his new companion’s attention and that bothered him. He didn't like bogging others with his problems. That was also due to the fact how do you explain to someone that your powers were the very thing causing the side effects? The pressure on his head, the memory fog, sometimes a nose bleed. She would probably look at him like he was crazy. Maybe he was? But he had never experienced something like this before. He didn't know how to relieve the problem. When he had the encounter with Branwen he was emotionally charged which caused his power to be far stronger than usual. The moment she made contact with him, their eyes on one another, he and she both slipped into unconsciousness.... her practically almost drowning. He felt terrible about the experience both nearly drowning her but also physically. That strong charge was something he was still carrying and it was something that he wasn't sure he knew how to handle most of the time he just waited for it to go away. Her question at no surprises but he didn't want to admit it. "Yeah, I suppose so." He said. "You can't break a horse without falling off at least once or twice." he winked at her just trying to lighten up the mood and cover his own embarrassment.
Her words did catch him by surprise. Almost like she was some kind of mind reader at how she picked his distaste of more magic. That worried him a little. He didn’t want someone poking around in his mind. He returned her grin though weaker this time. ” I would appreciate it. I’m not entirely that big of a fan of the healing magic variety.” he was actually going to see if any of the healers knew some of the more natural doctos around. There weren’t many of them these days. ”But let’s get the horses taken care of and get this big guy back.” He gave the golden horse a path on the side of the neck and led the two of them back down the trail. ”Burnet? Yeah! I have known him for quite a while. Good man.” Well lookie there, they had something in common aside from what it seems the like for horses. The young maiden seemed to have done great with Dio.
He was happy to hear she had some ideas on how to help. That meant a bigger paycheck for him also if she got those horses healthy again. Though medicine was something he had always been interested in learning and so he was curious as to whether or not she helped animals or just people. Her response was a little surprising going from smaller animals to much larger ones with a bit of a different anatomy seemed to be a bit of a challenge but if she was up for it, it seemed to be okay for her. As they were coming up on the ranch he briefly looked down to her. ”Give me a minute and I will put Dio here away and I can lead you to which ever one you felt like dealing with first.” All three of the horses that were having some issues were in the barn the sick one a bit quarantined. After tossing Dio back out into the pasture with his field mates he looked after Ymir and waved her to follow along inside the barn.
It was a pretty spacious barn but as a part time breeder and boarder Mr. Roberts had to have space. The man loved his horses but he was just too old to get out and do much with them anymore. Enzo practically did everything. ”Rhocus is the one with the possible hurt leg. I’m not sure what he could have done.” The black Frisian gelding stared at the two of them between the bars of his stall, ears perked forwards. ”Then there is the mare, Misty, that’s sick and Vegas you got caught in the fencing and got his eye pretty good. We’ve done the best we could with cleaning it and keeping it dry but you are more than welcome to take a look at it.” he stepped aside to give her some space so she could decide which she wanted to deal with first.

His concession was not one she attempted to delve any deeper into, particularly with the offered wink. In fact, that caused her to pause as she was beginning to say something, her cheeks actually reddening slightly. Shaking her head, feeling somewhat ridiculous for getting flustered over a simple wink (especially as a grown woman!) she glanced down to the ground. “I guessed as much.” Her response was weaker, maybe a little less sure, before she reoriented herself. Fortunately, he seemed inclined toward taking her offered assistance. That helped her steady herself. “Sure. We can talk symptoms later, once he’s put away. I’ve got quite a lot of things that can help, and others that I can make if we can run ingredients down.”
She stopped as they came into sight of the of the establishment, while he set to putting the horse away. Her eyes widened as she studied the barn and pastures before Ymir seemed to realize she was to follow him to the very place she was so transfixed by. At once taking hasty steps to catch up, she followed him.
Tapping a finger to her chin as Enzo described the respective situations, she seemed to process a moment. The hurt leg sounded a little more advanced, but certainly workable. The mare, she knew she’d save for last. The hurt eye, that would be easy. Seeming to reach a conclusion, she dropped her hand and slid her pack free, carrying it in one hand. “Rhocus first.”
Following Enzo to the stall, she very quickly found that the horse in question seemed far from inclined to put weight on his leg. Dropping her bag at the doorway, and slipping inside fearlessly, she pushed her way forward to begin inspecting the limb. Unfortunately, that particular animal also seemed far from inclined to actually cooperating. In fact, by the time Ymir actually discovered the source of the apparent soreness – a small piece of glass embedded deep in the sole of his hoof – he had actually jerked his leg free from her hands several times. By that point, she had been hunched near the stall floor for several minutes, out of sight. Growing frustrated with the animal, Ymir finally let her body slip into it’s other form.
When Ymir shifted to try again to help the animal, his previously feathered locks of hair were shorter. His shoulders broader. Body taller. Most importantly in this case? He had a stronger grip. Pushing his sleeves up to his elbows, plucking a small set of pliers from a leather bag that was secured about his waist, Ymir made quick work removing the debris, cleaning the bloody patch remaining, and packing the injury with a small poultice for infection and inflammation protection. Appearing at the door of the stall, he held the glass in between two fingers in offering to Enzo. “I’m ready for the next one.”

She went to work on the horse like a pro. Though he wondered how such a small lass would be able to do much with such a large animal. Horses though not realizing how much strength they actually have could be stubborn and since this one had a hurt foot he wanted no one near it or put weight on it. They danced around the stall a bit and as he was about to ask if she wanted him to hold her, she dropped out of sight and the horse held still. He stayed there leaning on the door attempting to see what was going on but the shadow of the stall made it pretty hard to fully see.
However what raised up was no longer a small tiny female instead it was a hulking man. Enzo stared transfixed and confused. Was that a man the whole time? As he moved towards the stall Enzo backed up and felt his hand running through his hair for a moment. Maybe his brain took on more damage than he thought it did. "Right. This way." he said and led Ymir towards the next horse in question. Yanking open the rusted and ever tricky door he stepped aside for Ymir to head in. He didn't wanna ask a ridiculous question like 'were you a man this entire time' but it was clearly bugging him. What in the world was going on? Was he that out of it? "If you don't mind me asking... but.... uh.." He stopped himself utterly confuse how to even phrase such a word. Not that he minded either gender. Whether a man or a woman they both were beautiful in their equal right. he just however wanted to be sure he wasn't having some kind of major issue that was going undiagonised. "Do you have some special kind of power?" yeah... maybe that was it?

Ymir arched a brow at the man’s surprised expression, though a small, playful twisting of his lips followed as he was let out of the stall. Well, perhaps transforming right then had not been optimal. Without warning, it might have been… a little mean. But Ymir was far from the sort to be scared or abashed by using his power. Magic was a natural extension of one’s self – a direct line to the energy of the universe and the world around them. Natural. There was nothing to fear, and that aside, it was certainly not as though the power that he had actually did much harm.
Aside from confusing the high hell out of people he met.
A hearty, amused chuckle sounded from the back of his throat as he nodded, absently brushing his hair from his forehead with the back of his hand. “I have two forms. That’s my magical ability. I figured this one might be easier for dealing with such… big animals.” His smile didn’t disappear, though perhaps the intensity of it shrank some. “I hope I didn’t startle you too badly.”

So now he had to refer to Ymir as he which was a little mind boggling but he was glad to know he really wasn't crazy. That would have been a hard one to explain to this gentleman that upon approach he could have sworn he was a woman. Nodding his head as green eyes stayed on him, a warm but bright smile played on his lips. "That's really neat and kind of the best of both worlds." he laughed. "Never met someone who could do that before. I mean I know people all over can have all kinds of powers and morph into animals..." he paused for a moment. His mind revisiting the young woman he had met a time ago, Branwen. She sure was a different kind of something. "Heck I haven't met anyone with mine neither but then again I don't really go looking." He rubbed the back of his neck before continuing on waving it off. "at first it was odd I was pretty sure I hit my head hard enough that I was seeing things but I'm glad to know I don't need to be emitted to the crazy bin." He winked at the other man before stepping back and out of the way.
"Must come in handy when you get tired of being one way or the other. Hm?" he asked curiously.
[super short! Im so sorry!!]

Ymir’s smile would’ve been more bashful had he been younger. This exact situation… Well, there were worst circumstances in which to confuse people. By now, it was something he simply accepted with little change to show for it in his disposition. Despite the radical differences after all, the body was still his own. He loved, embraced, his magic as an extension of it. And for that reason, there was nothing to be ashamed for.
That was not to say, however, that his smile lacked sympathy. The emotion seemed to fade in favor of something warmer at the brightness of the smile on Enzo’s face. In fact, Ymir’s eyes practically gleamed and danced with pride at the appreciative words he was offered. A contagious type of grin crossed his features. “It is. It can be really bothersome for other people sometimes, though.” A further brightness illuminated his features at the wink, and Ymir’s eyes practically twinkled as a result. “You definitely aren’t crazy, so that’s good to know.”
Making his way forward with a delicate step, Ymir wove to the man’s side with a thoughtful look, before decisively pacing forward. A small chuckle escaped him. “Very true. Let’s do the mare next…” He trailed off, seeming to realize he didn’t know exactly where to go as he implored Enzo with a questioning look. Turning his head up and down the rows of stalls, his gaze lingered, his head tilted ever so slightly.

He chuckled at his comment about him not being crazy. He sure felt it some times and little did he know his luck was only truly gonna get worse. "Other people just aren't open minded enough." Enzo said. At least in his opinion anyways. People tended to be far too judgmental than their honest worth. Their two senses didn't really matter much. Not as much as they would like it too. He started to lead the other man towards the mare and opening up the stall for him while stepping aside. "What was it like when you found out that was your power? Did it ever confuse you?" [/b]he could only imagine what that was like before Ymir figured out how to control it. Go to bed one night as one way and wake up as another? A glance at his reflection as a man walk away only to take another glance and he was now a woman? It must have been confusing. He knew when it came to his own power and how he was able to see things inside another person's head, memories that he had seen weren't his or even when he happened to knock someone unconscious from accidentally activating his power but got smacked by a barrier. It was hard to figure out what triggered them and there had been a lot of friendships that had gone sour because of it.
He watched the man move around in the stall with the mare. She, fortunately, wasn't all that finicky and pretty tolerant of things being done to her. At least in his experience, so he was sure Ymir wouldn't have too much trouble from her. He leaned on the open door as he watched quietly. "Where you heading after you are finished here?" he asked curiously. He figured he had other people to help too maybe even animals for all he knew but then again he said he wasn't necessarily a vet either.

Enzo’s kind words had a quality which almost took Ymir aback, causing him to cast a quick glance to the other man as if to confirm his intention before a smile fell over his features. “That is true. Then again, relations between races is another good example of that.” Sadness, or an echo of it, crossed his features. War, fighting, prejudice… In the state of the realm now, those things were simultaneously prevalent and distant at the same time. Little direct conflict, not causing the deaths of the population en masse, was great. But individuals still had ways of harboring hatred, fear… And it really did show at times. Both the Mages and the Merfolk had looked down upon Ymir’s family, for the relationship which had ultimately produced him. Others… well, even given the specificity of his power, it cropped up.
Shaking his head, he smiled a small smile. “It was unexpected at first. My parents found out when I was quite small… Needless to say, they didn’t give me dresses or anything of the sort as a child.” A fonder smile in memory, as they made their way to the next stall. “It got awkward when I came of age, but I can’t really say I’ve ever felt confused. Both of my bodies are mine. They’re a part of me.” Gesturing lightly against his own chest, as if in pride, his hand fell away in favor of settling on the stall door as he passed by.
Kneeling beside the mare, his hands gently smoothed over her hide, seeking out any indication of what might’ve caused her illness. A reflection of his proximity to the animal, his voice was softer, soothing as he answered Enzo’s question. “I’m not sure. I could go back to the School. I was thinking of travelling to find some family soon. What of you? Do the horses take up all of your time?’ Without meaning to, Ymir seemed oblivious to how forward of a connotation the words held.

He studied the young man as he worked with the mare, she standing patiently as she possibly could. Listening to the story Ymir said he nodded his head. He supposed it was very unexpected. "They were accepting though?" he asked. As a child, the impressions of peoples opinions meant a lot to the fragile developing minds. A smile was soon placed on Ymir's lips which seemed to be a little encouraging to believe it was a good memory and not a bad one. He could only imagine how rough it was for Ymir and how many people he could have lost over the span of a few years. He knew well he had and he couldn't even bend his gender. Some people were not open to those types of things... much like they were to hybrids. "Your gender doesn't define you. Nor does your name or your date of birth. It is what you are as a person and so far to me. You are a very likable positive person." He grinned. It was people like this he liked to be around. He wasn't attracted necessarily to gender though women were obviously easier to look at it was more a person's soul. How they were deeper than shallows of the flesh.
The mare was soon bobbing her head, tipping it up and down as she gave a snort. Enzo quietly watched as she restlessly switched from one leg to the other and then once more quieted back down. Leaning on his arm, green eyes went back towards Ymir as he asked what he would be off to after this whole shin dig. "School, huh. Wish I would have gone though not really being able to touch people does kind of put a damper on things." He scratched at his chin. "At least not touching and keeping eye contact. If I want to work with people, you need to be able to hold eye contact as well. I guess that's why I do better with animals." horses primarily. He enjoyed their company even if most of them were dumber than a box of rocks. "They aren't affected." He shifted his weight as he continued watching. "They do because I let it. I have nothing really else in life to do. They have kind of become my life."

Ymir glanced up briefly, fleetingly meeting his gaze. Given the proximity to the animal, and the reason for being here, he was clearly distracted with finding the creature’s ailment. “My parents? Oh, of course. I mean, I’m sure my mother would’ve been happier to see me spring a tail and some scales, but she didn’t mind in the least. My father was happy. I think it probably did drive a wedge between my mom’s side of the family. They are Merfolk.” Seeming to realize he was dolling out a lot of information at once, his cheeks colored slightly. The reddish tone only deepened with the kind words the horseman had to offer. “Th-Thanks!” The mare swished her tail, shifting her weight to the opposite leg in response to the stutter.
His hands were finally reaching her muzzle, fingers tentatively slipping into her mouth, when Enzo spoke again. It was at that exact time that he found it – a hard, distinct lump – right near the animal’s teeth. Almost immediately, the mare flinched away from the contact. Ymir frowned, lowering himself down to try getting a peek as he refocused to consider what Enzo had said. Not being able to touch people… put a damper on things? Eye contact? “What do you mean? Is that, like, an Immortal power or something?” It was certainly not a talent he had heard of a Mage possessing. “What is it that touching or eye contact does?” Sickness? Hurting people? Making them fall in love? In his role at the school… Ymir had seen a lot. His mind practically ran wild entertaining so many potentialities.
