I've wasted time, I've wasted breath He tried to go as slow as he could with her and even when they found a spot they could stop out to get an idea of what to do next, she still seemed hesitant with him. He made sure she was okay and started asking questions all of which she ignored. Instead her focus was on how that man acted towards him. His expression turned a little harder. He didn't know how to answer that because he didn't do anything instead it was a mere problem with racism amongst the community. However if he told her that he somehow didn't think she would honestly believe him. At her question of whether or not he had hurt a horse, he shook his head no. "I suppose my kindness gets me in trouble." he said. "I helped someone I apparently should not have. Now ranchers all over deem me unfit to work for them." He turned his head away and looked else where. It was hard telling how long this reputation burn would last but he hoped not long.
He moved towards a tree opposite of her and leaned against it. "What's your name?" he didn't understand what had just happened nor did he have the proper time to evaluate everything. It all happened a little fast. First, he had a horse who wasn't a horse. A nail she apparently was afraid of and then they were rushed off the property apparently as horse thieves. "Or perhaps you can shed some light of what just happened?" Much like the first questions he had he doubted he would get the answers to. It was frustrating going into this blind. After leaning for a moment he allowed his legs to bend to eventually let him fall into a sit... waiting.

Jema was quiet as she listened to Enzo speak. A frown coming to her lips as she took in his words. Someone he shouldn't have? "Do you mean to say you regret it?" She didn't ask who or why. And her question might seem strange. But she found herself curious to know more. What could he have done while freeing someone to make himself unhireable? Wait...didn't her master mentioned something about wolves? Hmm. As curious as she was Jema kept her gaze carefully averted to look as unassuming as possible. Something she had picked up over the years. It wasn't always humanoid creatures that would despise her either. Other horses could tell something was wrong, that she was different. Jema had received her fair share of bites and kicks in her time from other equines searching to establish a pecking order, unfortunately it was obvious to them that she didn't belong. Something that her more human companions never seemed to notice.
He ask her name and Jema tightened her grip on the rough blanket that was wrapped around her. It had been a very long time since her name had been used. She had gone by many names during her life of servitude, none of which she wanted to keep. "...Jema." It felt odd on her tongue, odd to her ears. Like a strange sort of deja vu. "And you are Master Enzo." She had heard her master and the other man mumbling as much. Jema looked down at the earth she sat on and let her fingers trail over some drying leaves, taking a small twig in hand she began to slowly draw in the soft earth. His question startled her and the added pressure made the small twig snap. Jema's pale eyes flicked over to Enzo, seeing him also crouching down against a tree. "I.." She began then stopped. She wasn't even sure how to tell him. What if...what if he decided to force her back into that life after hearing it? She didn't think he would but...it was hard to shake that suspicion.
"I was forced to shift many years ago and used as a mount in the war...that nail it somehow stopped me from changing back or communicating. I think it was enchanted I-I don't really know." Her brow wrinkled and Jema rubbed her temple as if the memories made her head hurt. "It has been over a century since I was trapped. I...I owe you much for saving me." She risked a look at him before turning her eyes away from him again. "You were very kind...not many are. It is obvious you are a very skilled trainer, Master Enzo..."

At her question his lips pursed. Did he regret it? He wanted to say he still stuck with his answer no because a life was a life no matter how cruel the person treats you but at the same time his frustration was getting the better of him. She had made it nearly impossible for him to find anything to make a living. He was almost reduced to living like a beggar. No less he couldn’t say he did. ”I don’t know.” he admitted. ”I probably should but this person ---…” he sighed. It was complex to really digest on the thought of how he was really feeling towards Branwen. He didn’t hate her he knew that but she was his least favorite person as of right now. ”This person is a friend despite what has been done.” Was about all he could say on the matter. He hoped she would be fine with it simply because he didn’t know what else to say. He didn’t want to say something only to regret it in the end. He was now sitting against the trunk of a tree, letting his arms rest on his knees though he watched her. Green eyes were taking in the actions of the young woman. She was very evasive with her gaze as if acting like if she looked at him for too long he would beat her for it or perhaps get angry. He would do neither but he supposed she would have to figure that out on her own.
Finally, there was a name to the pretty face. ”Jema. That is a very nice name.” he said. She soon spoke his name though had master in front of it. ”Not a master. Just Enzo.” he said. ”I am no one’s master nor would I want to be.” Being over someone wasn’t exactly his idea of fun. He would rather be equal than below or above. Both positions seemed like too much work. He continued watching her as she was distracting herself with no drawing things in the dirt. His head tipped. What was this girl… where on earth did she come from? She seemed so lost and frightened it kind of broke his heart. No one should have to feel fear like that to the point that she was nearly lost in her own world.
Once more he tried fishing for answers but he wasn’t disappointed this time. He listened as she spoke which of course made sense now. He nodded his head slowly before lowering his eyes towards his own hands taking the weight of his gaze off of her so she didn’t feel uncomfortable. ”I see. The nail makes sense now. Well, You won’t have to worry about that again, I assure you.” Her compliments made him smile only a little and he nodded his head. ”Thank you. I take pride in my work. I am just sorry you have had to experience such cruelty. However, you don’t have to worry about repaying me. I am glad I could help even without intentionally knowing what was going on.” he didn’t want her to think she owed him anything. Because in his mind she didn’t. He was just glad to have helped her finally get the freedom she deserved. ”Honest. I’m just glad you are free now.”

His answer was confusing and vague, she couldn't really make much of it. But it sounded as if he was standing by this person even if they had wronged him. "That is...good." She said carefully. Unsure but trying to keep up with his words. Thankfully the moment passed. He called her name pretty and Jema acted as if she hadn't heard. As a horse the compliments came in droves. Beautiful form and coat, long gait. But as a human they seemed more personal somehow and she didn't know how to respond. He said he wasn't a master and Jema paused to look over at him. Worry coming to her features. "You are not keeping me then?" She asked slowly. She didn't know how to exist alone. Things were so different now. She had no family left, no friends. No one to lean on.
She looked over at him when he said she need not worry about the nail any longer. It was easy for him to say such a thing. She had been a prisoner in her own body for over a century, it wasn't something she could easily get over. "I do need to repay you, I am just not sure how." She argued softly and turned her green eyes away from him as she did so. "Free...." She repeated softly and clutched her knees tighter against her chest. "I do not know how to be free." It might sound strange to him, but it was true. Just the notion of being able to do as she wished was foreign to her.
"Master Enzo-" It would be a hard habit to break. Even if she hadn't spoken verbally she had seen those around her as her masters and thought of them in those terms. Just calling this man by his name felt...disrespectful. "-Enzo, I....my family has been gone for a very long time. I don't know how...what to do." She hated being so truthful but she felt she could trust him, she owed him that much. He had saved her after all. "Can you keep me? Just until I figure it all out....I won't be a problem. I promise." Her terminology was strange and she still referred to herself as something to be owned but that mindset would not be easy to come out of.
"I will make myself useful to you."

The way she worded it had him confused. Keeping her? His green eyes focused on the woman for a moment and quietly shook his head. ” You aren’t mine to keep?” he spoke carefully. ”You--- you mean am I turning you away?” He figured she has probably just worded that wrong and it made him a little skeptical at the idea of turning her out in the wild. Would she just go to anyone and follow them? Would they end up mistreating her? She soon started to argue back in her soft tender way and said she didn’t know how to be free and that she would be more than willing to make herself useful for him if he just kept her.
This worried him. How was he going to feed two mouths when he could barely feed himself? Provide for himself? And now he has a woman who was pretty well stating the fact she was dependent on this. ”Jema…” he started. He didn’t think this was going to work but the idea of someone taking advantage of her didn’t seem like a good idea either. Maybe he could just help her get her on her feet, teach her what she needed to know and send her on her way. That could maybe take a few weeks or so right? Sighing quietly he went back to looking at her though she was likely to avoid all eye contact. ”Okay.” He said nodding his head. ”You can stay with me but I don’t…. I don’t own you. You are a person now and you aren’t a slave.” Though it was true other people out there did own others but he by no means had that type of mindset.
After a few moments, he lifted back to his feet and stepped carefully towards her, lowering his hand down to her once more. ”We need to get you some clothes…” He wasn’t sure how he was going to do that but briefly the idea of his sister, Solara came to mind. Maybe she could be of some use or at least in the clothes department. He could work for it or something on her farm. Though that sort of made his skin crawl asking for help in that sort of manner. But if he was going to have someone else in his care now …. He couldn’t go days without human necessities. "We need to go pay a visit to my sister."
How on earth did he keep getting himself into these types of problems.

Jema was quiet as he seemed to debate what he was going to do with her. Pale green eyes staring down at the ground as she wondered what would happen if he left her here. Where would she go? She was afraid to ask anyone for help...so many were not kind like Enzo. Eventually he agreed but it was the specifics that were harder to grasp. She was her own person now. It was a little overwhelming to even think about. Her head dipped softly in agreement, not sure what else to say or do. She was still deep in thought when he stood and moved toward her. Her muscles tightening in response as if ready to flee. But she didn't need to, that would take much getting used to. She reached up to slowly take his hand, her fingers sliding over the callouses and rough spots left by his labor-intensive career. And slowly she pulled herself to her feet.
"Your sister." She repeated slowly and looked off into the woods. They would have a long way to go and they couldn't very well cross her old master's land. "I can get us there...." She said softly, a little reluctant. But the nail was gone now, she didn't have to be afraid any longer. Jema stepped back, letting her fingers trail back over his until her arm fell to her side. In silence, she began to shift. Eventually the flea bitten gray horse she had been when they first met. She dipped her head and pawed at the ground with the hoof that had held the nail. Indeed she didn't feel restrained, she felt...free.
"You can hear me?" She ask him telepathically as she pawed at the earth. Almost pensive. "Just tell me where to go and I will get you there." She didn't say it directly but would nip at her side to make the point known. She would take him anywhere he wanted to go, because now she didn't have to.

He half expected a wild animal response but when he received none, he was pleasantly surprised. She slid her fingers into his own and let him help her up onto her feet. After he had spoken to her about Solara she seemed to be mulling things over in her head. Yeah, he definitely should have gone to sister first but of course being the proud man he was he didn’t want to go prying for help. He was a hard worker and he would rather do things on his own. However, this was a delicate situation and as good as he was with people and animals… he wasn’t entirely sure what to do with Jema plus she needed to be clothed and he had absolutely no way of doing so.
Her words caused him to arch a brow as she spoke once more and soon she backed up letting go of his hand and started to shift back into the mare. He stood there for a moment as soon heard her voice echo in his head. ”Y-yeah. Are you sure?” he said gently. He wasn’t trying to overstep boundaries here but she told him to just tell her where they needed to go. He approached her back. He was attempting to adjust her to this and move as slow as possible as to not spook her. Even if she was a shifter that still didn’t mean she didn’t have the reflexes of a horse. ”Alright. I’m getting on…” he warned her and then did so lifting himself up and over by hopping and using her mane. ”We need to head west first.” [thread end]
