Undead
From the beginning....
No one really knows when the undead came about. Some say that they were present before the war, however there were not as many as there are now. Some believe that it is a curse from the Goddess of Darkness, but the lore is vague. But, ever since the beginning it had been that from all races, some became undead while the others got to continue to rest in peace. No one knows why it had been some and not others, perhaps it was from an undying will, or just chance. But, before the war the undead have hardly ever been heard of. As the war waged on however, more soldiers have begun to rise as undead. Some kingdoms saw this as a benefit, using their undying troops as a deadly weapon. But, as these soldiers kept dying and dying again, eventually they lost their minds, turning against the very ones that they have been fighting for. They were no longer used in most kingdoms, for fear of their betrayal, but as they focused on their own matters for the war, the undead were never considered and were left wandering the lands. But when the war ended, the races signed the treaty. The undead were never a faction to begin with, and as the living races knew that eventually when they died there was a possibility that they would become undead, they decided to build a graveyard, distanced from the other kingdoms on the far edge of Oedir. It would be sealed with a gate, to prevent the undead from encroaching to the side of the living. Over the hundred years this went into work, and eventually the undead began to develop a culture of their own. A city for them was built, and a harbor as well. The undead have since mostly lived amongst their own kind, even though they had to deal with the ones that became mindless.
An undead can come from any race, lived any normal regular life as anyone would. Once they are dead however, they have lost any magic they once previously had, back into the earth from which it came. When people from any race die, they are taken to the graveyard beyond the gates to be buried. The gates are guarded by the Grave Keeper to make sure that no undead escape, however the undead are free to wander and go anywhere, though most go to Undead City. Most undead explore Beyond the Graveyard though, and many find their way around the gates back into the mainland. The undead are ruled by a king, who rules with an iron fist that keeps this chaotic race somewhat organized. The most notable thing about the undead is that they can die as many times and still stay alive in their undead state, however the pain still hurts the same every time. However, each time an undead dies, or as an undead continues to live an incredibly long life, their mind becomes more withered. When they have become completely lost their mind, they are known as mindless. In this state they are brain-dead, and some just wallow although most become hostile. When an undead is mindless they can be killed and finally put to rest. The undead have to take care of their own mindless, as otherwise they would turn against the undead. There are many places that store mindless, although most wander Beyond the Graveyard. Overall the undead is most undoubtedly the most unwelcome of races within the mainland, and are typically looked at for eventually becoming mindless.
Appearance
The undead can look as they did when they were alive, or completely rotten and decayed depending how long they were dead. Most are somewhere in the middle.
Magic
All undead lose magic when they die even if they had it before in their previous life. Werebeasts will also no longer have the ability to shift. Though a dragon can still transform into their human form if they had one when they were alive, but they will lose their elemental magic.
Undead Ranks
Undead King: OPEN Rules with an iron fist, someone who has climbed the ranks through battle and willpower alone. Has strong resolve and proof that they are unlikely to become mindless anytime soon. Has to contain and rule over such a chaotic race, and is usually won over with cruel methods for the undead know no bounds. He must also have some way to deal with the other kingdoms, for they look down the undead and their king after all.
The Grave Keeper: OPEN The Grave Keeper is responsible for maintaining the Graveyard, which include making sure the dead are buried and that no undead get beyond the gates. They should have strong fighting capability in order to do so, and they have lackeys to help assure that none go past the gates. They can allow the living to enter the Graveyard, but not the other way around, even if a living insists on it.
