Ea didn't try to hide the quick flash of exasperation. Here he was, trying to be a gentleman and even admitting to perhaps being too impulsive (something he didn't do often) and Carlisle wouldn't even let him have that. Caught between bemused and irritated, the mage stood with hand on hips for a moment before he crossed the room towards the doctor, firmly placing his hands on his shoulders.
"No wonder you're a wreck. You never let anyone else shoulder any bit of the burden." He met Carlisle's eyes seriously, head tilted a little to one side. "And that is a crying shame, you should have people falling over themselves to climb into your bed. Now never mind the linens. Get some rest, I'll meditate downstairs awhile. I'm told doing it uncomfortably is good for the soul. I will come and fetch you if anything changes. I'm sure that one will get you up before I do."
He kept his voice soft, so as not to wake the babe. After studying Carlisle a moment longer he let his hands fall. Then he swept downstairs, footfalls cat-light on the steps. He moved with the air of someone who expected what he said to be listened to, and had no need to stay and make sure his orders were followed. Not that they had been terribly forceful. In the end, Carlisle was an adult and was capable of taking care of himself. Downstairs Ea let some of the easy confidence drop, sighing. He pressed the amber pendent between his palms, rolling it pensively as he looked unseeing over the sleeping boy.
Then he quietly drew a stool over next to the table, managed to perch himself on it cross legged, and began the tedious process of chasing thought out of his mind. It would be moderately restful for his mind, if not his body. He just much preferred the ritual of movement that was his normal meditation (when he could be bothered to do it). Stillness did not come easy for him, but at least it gave him something to work on, something to keep his mind busy. Always though some part of him was listening for footfalls on the stair.

When Ea walked closer Carisle's dark eyes shifted up to follow him. The firm pressure on his shoulders was unexpected but he didn't flinch away. It was Ea's words that caused a wrinkle in his brow and an uneasy smile. "I wouldn't say I'm a mess." He floundered. Trying to find footing. He wasn't though...was he? He had himself together. He worked and cared for his daughter and the people that came to him. But he stopped trying to find the meaning behind the words and nodded when Ea told him to get some sleep. "Alright then." He replied with a hesitant smile. Given his head space on this night Ea was likely the better of the two to be watching the child. He watched Ea disappear back down the stairs and shuffled over to his bed. Not even bothering to change his clothing before crawling up to let his head sink into one of the pillows. It was a miracle his eyes even closed before sleep took him.
The next morning came quickly. Erin's screeching in her crib pulled him from his dreams and sleepily Carlisle fumbled around to find the goats milk that would fill her little stomach. Once she was changed and fed Carlisle headed downstairs with the infant perched on his slender hip. One hand raking tiredly over his eyes. He didn't even recall the events of the night before until his eyes fell on the copper toned hair that fell down Ea's back from where he bowed. That's right, the boy. His eyes moved from Ea to the child as he made his way around the man that perched on the stool. The child seemed so peaceful that for a moment he felt his heart flutter with worry. But when his fingertips just grazed the childs neck the child reacted. A loud hiss and a flail that smacked Carlisle's hand away. "Wait!" He tried to call the child back but already the boy was scrambling for the door. Obviously afraid after waking up in the presence of strangers.
Carlisle sighed and leaned on his open palm that now sat on the table. "So much for checking his head..." His voice rumbled almost hoarse, reflecting the tiredness that had settled in his bones like an affliction. Erin was once again intrigued by the long haired man and this time her chubby fingers snatched at the silky strands before Carlisle could stop her. "Erin, no." He corrected calmly but sent and apologetic look to Ea. He wasn't sure what to say to him really. The night hand ended rather...abruptly. "Sorry." He said softly while unraveling his long locks from Erin's tiny fingers.

It always felt a bit like floating, when he settled into the proper state. His mind, clear, like the heart of flame. His eyes hooded, steadily watching the boy both seeing him and not seeing him at the same time. If something changed, he'd noticed. But otherwise his attention was drawn inward. Spring cleaning, like a proper housewife. He swept up the stray threads of his magic, carefully sorted through tangled strands of emotions. New facts and thoughts were filed away, the new information about his own magic carefully added to what else he had. And then he made a new little place on the shelves of his memories and tucked away his face and his name and the feel of his lips.
He shifted a little when he heard the infant's cries, and and he glanced towards the stairs. The boy on the table shifted as though disturbed by the noise and Ea looked him over. Not too hurt to run he thought. With a careful motion he slid a thin gold band off his pinky and tucked it into one of the boy's pockets. While he'd never been an excellent pick pocket, in the quiet stillness of the doctor's office he managed all the same. Then he returned to his perch, mind still clear and calm and easy. Only his hands moved now, slowly spinning the amber pendant between his fingers.
He didn't have to wait long. Here he came, all gentleness and concern as he went to the boy, his own child on his hip. Then the boy reacted (predictably to Ea's mind) to the strange touch, now well rested. Before he could even unfold his legs, the boy was scrambling out the door injuries or no. He settled back onto the stool, smothering a laugh. He also didn't move away from Erin's questing fingers. Even as Carlisle apologized, the fire mage gently shook his hair forward, letting the silky strands fall around her for a moment before he add his own patient fingers to untangling himself.
"I am more than grateful that you opened your door last night, Carlisle." Freed, he swept his hair back and twisted it into a rather messy not on the back of his head. From somewhere he produce a fine bone hair pin and slid it home to hold the thick strands into place. It mostly worked, though not entirely. He could feel a little weariness himself, dragging at his bones and a nagging voice in the back of his head. He stood and set a small pouch from his belt on the stool where he had sat the night out. It clinked, heavy with coin.
"Could I perhaps tempt you to take breakfast with me before you return to work?" He was rather surprised at how much he wanted Carlisle to say yes. So he could delay a bit longer despite the knowledge that he had council duties waiting for him that he had put off quite long enough with his wandering about the countryside.

Erin giggled gleefully and flailed her hands through the curtain of hair. The corner of Carlisle's lips pulled into a smile even as he worked to unravel her. He looked over at Ea when he spoke, hesitating as if almost shocked that he had been spoken to. "My door is always open." He said softly. His words of course those of a kind physician but something else as well. At the sound of coin Carlisle quickly raised his free hand in a small waving gesture. "Keep your coin Ea, you watched the boy. I slept."
It was Ea's following question that made him fall silent before a smile came to his face. Breakfast...he hadn't eaten since yesterday morning. breakfast would be lovely. "I-" But of course, as life did. It got in the way. The door that had been opened by the boy jingled when a woman entered with a small bleeding wound on her arm. Frantically she started to explain what had happened even before Carlisle could greet her. His tired eyes turned back to Ea and he forced a smile. "I should get to work." He finished his earlier sentence although in a much different way than he had planned. It was then that the woman who baby sat Erin through the day came through the door and took the infant with a wide smile from her father's arms.
Now freed and strapped for time given the waiting woman Carlisle reached out to suddenly snag Ea's hand. His grip loose but firm enough to hopefully be noticed. "But another time...if you ever find yourself in Cendra and bored enough to search me out." A warm smile was given before he released the oh so intriguing man so that he might escape the busy office if he desired. Unable to escape the nagging thought that he wished he could have learned more about him.

Ea shook his head at the doctor's insistence put reluctantly plucked the pouch back up- he didn't really want to but he had no desire to offend the good doctor. And he was very sensitive to pushing money on someone. Money was dangerous sometimes. If you weren't careful it could change the relationships between people. Ea knew the weight that feeling like you owed someone could cause and he didn't want to leave that impression on Carlisle. Didn't want to leave the impression that he was paying for more than just the doctor's skills. "If you insist." He murmured softly.
He stepped back as the woman entered the shop, feeling a lump of disappointment in his gut. Well damn, there went that plan. His shoulders drooped slightly, the only hint of it that escaped him. He also understood duty. Then Erin was swept away and it seemed like Carlisle was quickly being drawn along into what looked like another hectic day. Then warm fingers touched his hand and convulsively his fingers gripped in response. His eyes came back up to the doctor's and he couldn't help but answer the warm smile with one in return. He lifted the doctor's hand briefly, touching it to his chest.
"Of course. I wouldn't think of not stopping by the next time I find myself in the area." Now, he would just need a chance to escape Lledrith for a while again. He was sure he could find some reason. Perhaps one of those diplomatic missions he so often avoided. Then he let Carlisle's hand go and slipped out into the city. He didn't leave right away, going about some errands before he fetched his horse and turned his thoughts towards the journey back to Lledrith School.
In between clients, Carlisle would find a basket left behind just inside the door, covered in a simple cloth, containing what looked a bit like a picnic breakfast- all things that could be eaten quickly, and that kept well. Also inside was a small paper back which turned out to hold a simple cloth doll.
