When the dream controls my attitude, tells me what to say and to do Zaos wandered in a place between fury and anguish. That villain, that vagrant, that human. He wanted to curse his name, but he knew that wasn't fair and he shouldn't kill the messenger. His sister, little Larkin, was dead. Just the thought of it made his knees go weak. As much as he wanted to collapse in a heap and cry, he kept on walking. His wandering had led him to the Emberi Kingdom, which was fine with him. Anywhere was better than home. That house, full of her books. Oh gods, what was he going to do with the books he'd bought to surprise her?
He tried to put it out of his mind. He'd only recently gotten the news. Of course he'd need time to heal. Taking a deep breath to steady himself, he looked around at the city. He could see the castle from where he was, so he wasn't very close to it. Not yet. His tired feet carried him on, down street after street, picking his way around crowds, stopping occasionally to try and pet a stray dog. Yes, his legs and feet ached, but what else could he do?
Before he knew it, he was as close to the castle as he could be. He stared up at it, losing himself in thought. Any thought that wasn't Larkin. Poor little Larkin.

FOG IN THE AIR JUST TO MAKE MY MIND FEEL CLEAR
|
» Nicodemus' motions were quick and smooth, belying his familiarity with his current actions. He was moving the empty cages out of the way. Several of them would be travelling to a Falcon Race in the city. It wasn’t much of a move, but the king had wanted the birds to be moved to a more accessible point. He was managing to avoid dropping the cages as he walked to the other side. While the birds were in the other smaller falconry, this place would be renovated and cleaned. Of course, Nicodemus cleaned the cages regularly, but there was nothing like a good scrub under neither where the cages had been sitting.
He turned around, his eyes settling on the three last birds that he had to take over. He let out a sigh and approached the smallest one. He clicked his tongue a few times, trying to coax the hawk from its hiding position. It chirps angrily at him and he scowled. He turned his back and grabbed a mask and glove. After about ten minutes he managed to catch the hawk and get the mask over her face. She was making soft annoyed noises but held onto his arm well. He exited the building and winced at the bright sunlight as it hit his face. He squinted and continued on his path towards the smaller building. It was much closer to the city, so it was a five-minute walk all the way down. He was unsure of whether the boorish day to day tasks were pleasant or mind-numbing, perhaps somewhere in between. He was relaxed by it but part of him wished that someone would break him out of his routine. He was becoming too comfortable in his place here, although he knew that he would have to give it up soon.
This thought brought his mood down a little, and he murmured soft words to the hawk on his left arm. She stopped her noises for a moment, and he had time to glance around. His eyebrow furrowed as he caught sight of someone who looked just a little familiar. Nicodemus changed his pace a little, slowing down as if to try and recall where he had seen this man before. He was a tall blonde elf, handsome but not particularly one to stand out in the crowd. The dragon elder almost stumbled back upon realising who he was seeing, and elf he had bumped into when attending the last ceremony a few months ago. He almost laughed at himself, but that was when the hawk began to a screeching sound. Nico swore loudly and just closed his eyes until the noise had settled down. He opened his eyes again and his cheeks were heated as he caught the gaze of Zaos.
