Magical Ability:
Mages: Dima's particular magic revolved around the generation of sound. He creates auditory illusions- music out of thin air. He is competent in forms of ritual divination and other illusion magic but has only the basics of elemental manipulation, air being the easiest for him. What is perhaps most peculiar about Dima is that he is exceptionally good at cooperative magic- that is, merging his magic with that of other mages in order to perform feats that would be beyond any one individual.

Appearance:
Dima is pretty, for a man. Pretty and delicate and there is always a sort of grief or fear that lingers in the depths of his deep green eyes. He wears his blakc hair long, past his waist and frequently loose or decorated with elaborate patterns of braids. He tends to dress quite modestly but has a preference for fabrics that feel good to the touch. Though you wouldn't think he would be good at blending in, he is surprisingly adept at making it easy to overlook him. He seems to have perpetual dark circles beneath his eyes and always seems a little too thin, as though he does not eat well. His mages mark is silver filigree against his golden skin and covers his hands from fingertip to just past his wrist on both palms and backs.

Personality:
Dima is... fragile. Sleep comes infrequently to him and is usually disturbed by nightmares. Though he has some purpose in life in his teaching, he has nothing else besides it. When teaching is not enough to fill his time he finds himself drifting, unsure of what to do with himself. He is isolated but not by design. He seems to not know how to reach out and make connections with people. Or maybe he's simply afraid to. He is afraid of many things- the sea, storms, and noises in the dark. He does not travel by ship very well even on quite calm water, prone to sea-sickness. He is always afraid that he is only one step away from madness and he is constantly questioning his own mind.

History:
Dima was born and raised on the streets of Cendra City, one poor boy among many. He did odd jobs from the time he was old enough to follow instructions. His mother worked at an in, and did some work on her back to keep them in food and clothing. They slept on the floor of the inn where she worked and all-in-all it wasn't the worst young life to have. He was only 8 when he began to evidence his gift. His mother impressed on him that he had to keep it a secret so he learned very quickly on his own how to keep it from happening. However, when alone he would often entertain himself and her with snatches of conversation he'd overheard, the melodies of birds, and bits of music from the street performers. He was almost 10 by the time a tracker finally found him. Knowing a better life when she saw one, his mother did everything she could to make him want to go. He never saw her again.

His life wasn't a bad one as a student. Though always shy, he found common threads among many of the other students though most were older than he. Over time he became fast friends with two other boys, one with a penchant for visual illusions and the other an empath. The illusionist was quite outgoing and the three of them were frequently the cause of minor mischief around the school. Their pranks and tricks never hurt anyone, but they sometimes caused quite a bit of inconvenience. Quite by accident they discovered how to work together beyond just layering spells. They could funnel their magic through one or simply weave their magic together to make it stronger. When a teacher finally figured out what they were doing, they were taken under special tutelage to ensure they didn't hurt themselves or others in their experiments.

There were rumors that the trio were more than just friends. They only grew closer as they grew older. After graduating as full-fledged mages, they all wanted to see the world, go somewhere new. They begged, borrowed, and scraped together enough money to charted a ship to some unexplored islands rumored to be full of the ruins of some ancient civilization. They never made it to the islands.

On the third night out, a great storm whipped the sea into a frenzy. Aflame from a lightning strike and broken apart by vicious waves, the ship sank. No one really knows what happened after that, since Dima is the only survivor and he does not speak of it. He was later found washed up on a beach by a handful of human villagers. They took him in but most feared him for his mage mark and the sounds of thunder that seemed to trail him. When he eventually woke he sat mute and apparently unseeing, broken by occasional fits of madness.

A tracker eventually found him after nearly a year. He'd been kept isolated but cared for by kind people who didn't know how to help him. The tracker brought him back to the school and over time his mind seemed to recover. Out of some kind of courtesy, those who knew didn't speak often of his madness, saving him some of the shame as he gradually began to scrape his life back together. When he had proven that he could safely work magic again, he was tentatively offered a teaching position. Seeing that it seemed to give him purpose and grounding, he has maintained that position ever since. Though he is an expert in the subject, he refrains from doing very powerful cooperative magic unless he must.

Miscellaneous:
A small leather pouch of stones is never far from him, usually hanging on his belt. Each stone is symbolic of a place, person, or event and they are extremely important to him.
