| I t was almost ironic that the human would find comfort in the garden that was walled in and cared for by immortal servants. That the vast towering plants with bright colors screaming danger would make her feel content instead of concern. But this was where she often came when she just needed some air. The castle was huge but the air could still feel smothering. The eyes that followed her, the whispers. No. Her position here was not a prestigious one by any means and she was well aware of the not so whispered words of those that didn't want her here. The servants that were unerringly loyal to the queen saw her as a fly in the ointment. Right when their relationship hit a rough patch the human had appeared. As if she had enough power to plan such things. It had all been by chance. But here she was now. Night was coming quickly and the sun was streaking the sky with its last desperate rays of light. The king had not told her to come to his chambers on this night so she had decided to wander. Perhaps hoping in an ill guided way that tonight she would see Ezra again. It was a dangerous game they played but Kamaria was well aware the consequences for her would be much more dire. She could easily lose her head. The king had a reputation for being hot headed and ruthless. So what would he do if the woman he had chosen to occupy his bed on occasion was visiting another? And had developed feelings for his son? It didn't bode well for her. But like a moth to a flame she kept trying her luck. Desperate for that warmth but knowing that eventually she would get too close and singe her wings. Her long unruly mane had been pinned up on this night. For the most part. There were of course curls that still escaped the silver pearl clip but the fast that it was staying up at all was a miracle. The garden was empty as expected when it was this late. But on occasion when Ezra knew his father hadn't pulled the mistress into his chambers he would wander here. Maybe searching for her, maybe just to enjoy the scenery. Kai could hope it was the first option. He was the only person in the castle that made her feel as if she were more than just a plaything for a powerful man. More than just a glorified whore. But was it just an act? She didn't know and she truly didn't want to think about that very much. He was her little escape from the lonely husk she had become. Always so vibrant and full of life he could make her smile even on her darkest days. But tonight he might now show. It wasn't as if she had ask him to. It wasn't as if she could. Kamaria sighed and shifted until she lay down on the bench that rested beneath the canopy of several wild plants. One of her legs draped off the bench so that her bare toes just touched the soft soil. She could just see the small dots of light in the sky where the stars would soon shine when there was a sound of something rustling through the foliage near by. She didn't turn to see, knowing it wouldn't be a wild beast of any sort. But someone of the castle. |

| He hadn’t meant to fall asleep. Actually when he laid down to rest it just kind of happened. His bed was so welcoming and comfortable that the moment the immortal prince had pressed into it he was out like a light. He hadn’t been sleeping well the past few nights. He could never tell if his nightmares were real or if it was vision from his ‘gift’ he had received at his ceremony. Either way the amount of grisly detail and horrific sights was enough to keep anyone awake. It was usually about when he would stay up most of the night talking to Kamaria especially when she wasn’t called away to his father’s bed. That was primarily how it had happened anyways. The woman and him had clipped hallways and though it didn’t start off pleasant the human girl wore on him. He had begun to see who the real victim was and well it wasn’t either one of his parents. Kamaria technically had no choice to be there… to be used.
Their attachments to one another had been accidents though. The more he had wandered the halls the more he had run into her. Sleep was so fleeting at times like this. Except now, now he was trying to stir from his sleep and get out of a nightmare. He could feel his body twitch and it took several attempts in his dream to really stir himself up and off the bed.
Sweat beaded on his skin as chest rose and fell, dark eyes wide for a moment as he stared at the bed like it was a trap. It really was in a sense. A trap for nightmares.
Maybe he was better off going for his nightly walk. Running his hand through his hair he turned on his heel and headed out towards the garden. He still couldn’t fully believe he had fallen asleep like that. Here lately it just seemed like it was getting easier and easier to do. That worried him. That mean his guard for things were weakened. As he walked in towards the garden he briefly began to wonder if he would run into Kamaria. It wasn’t an unusual meeting for them and it was primarily one of the reasons he had took a liking to the ‘enchanted garden’. It was enchanted. It was enchanted with the muses of romance… a forbidden romance. He headed towards the spot he usually found his beautiful lover.
Just as he expected he saw her laying there upon the bench and he strode up towards her, leaning over her head as he stared down. ”Enjoying the night so far?” He said with a small grin. He wanted to lean down and kiss her but in case there were any prying eyes he pushed back the temptation. ”I figured tonight would be a night with the king. He seems to favor beautiful nights… much like this one… with you.”

| A shadow crossed her face and Kamaria looked up with the hitch of unease deep in her gut. Despite knowing where she was having someone looming over you could be rather....intimidating. She blinked and tried to make out the dark face with the light of the moon behind him. It was Ezra's deep voice that brought a smile to her face, the tension in her body visibly dissipating. "Ezra." She said his name in a breath and a smile bloomed on her face. Sweet Ezra. "Its been lonely, but nice." His next statement caused her dark eyes to move away from him and she scooted up on the bench so that she was sitting upright. She hated discussing his father with him. She was well aware of the tangled web she wove and how much he despised her role. But there was little she could do to change it. He was her oasis in a desert of unfriendly faces. She swallowed down the negative feelings and after a quick glance at their surroundings she reached forward to take his hand in her own. "Not tonight."She said softly and let her thumb roll over his knuckles. "Are you alright? Nightmares again?" He hadn't told her the details and she assumed he never would. But she knew he often woke up terrified and covered in sweat. A fear gripping him that nothing could shake. It had happened on the couple times that she had risked staying longer in his room. Savoring those moments after he fell asleep. Her dark eyes following the lines of his face as if she could carve them to memory, she would need something to hold close when it all came crashing down around her. It was only a matter of time. "Were you looking for me?" She ask with a tentative smile. "Or did I just take the seat you were hoping for?" |

| He didn’t like causing her discomfort and at once he realized once the words escaped his mouth that it was something to bring that pretty face in to a frown. ”Sorry.” he said with a hushed whisper. He supposed it was some sort of bitterness he still had. The woman he had quite the fancy for was someone who was intangible to him. Her heart should lie elsewhere. Her heart should be fighting for his but instead…. He found his heart fighting for hers and her – hopefully wanting the same. ”I meant no harm.” With the same quiet tone he brushed his fingers along her face. He couldn’t see her very well within their dark surroundings but he could memorize every detail she had.
That was when she grabbed his hand and held it, running her soft thumb over his knuckles as he moved to sit next to her. He wanted to hold her to not keep such feelings at bay but he knew the risks and most of them were deadly to her. Her question caused him to furrow her brows and he could hear a soft laughter in the back of his mind. He couldn’t see the decayed man but he knew well he was there. Yes, Ezra. Are you okay?. The words were far more saltier than when she spoke them but he did his best to block it out. ”Yeah. I just… “ he hated talking about them feeling as though they were something that made him lesser of a man. Weakened by dreams. ”You know…” but maybe she really didn’t. All she knew was that he had them and had witnessed a couple of them. It wasn’t something he felt pride in and to be honest, he hated the fact he had to deal with it. ”The goddess and her cruel jokes.” he gave her a thin smile before glancing up at the moon for a moment when she spoke once more. ”I was actually.” he said. ”I have something for you.” He knew it wasn’t something she would be able to wear often but it was something from him she could keep with her. Digging into his pocket he dug out a small heart locket engraved with a pinkish gold rose. On the inside it had their initials. ”I had this made for you.” Obviously he knew the consequences of it but she was more to him than just a romp in the sheets. She was worth so much more than what the king used her for.

She smiled softly at Ezra and reached up to grasp his hand then turned her face against his palm and placed a brief soft kiss there. "I know." She murmured against his skin then released him. When Ezra told her of his nightmares, or rather skirted around the subject as he always had she didn't press. She wouldn't ask him to speak of things that he didn't wish to even if she was concerned. She would be there. A silent ear if he ever chose to discuss it with her. Or at least until her own precarious life at court came to a crashing halt.
But some things, rather people. Were worth the risk.
She was surprised when he said he had something for her. Gifts were something that had never passed between them for obvious reasons but when he held out the locket to her Kamaria gently took it in her hands with all the care one might a robins egg. She let her thumb trail over the intricate carvings on the front. Her dark eyes flitting up to Ezra before back down to the locket that she opened. Finding their initials setting inside. Together as they could never be. "Its..." She had never received such a gift. She wasn't certain just what to say. Or why she felt emotion rising in her chest like a wave. "-beautiful." She clutched the locket to her chest and stood. The hand not holding the locket encircling him and holding him close.
She never knew when someone might step into the garden so the moment was all to brief. She stepped back from him then handed him the locket. Lifting the locks of long hair that escaped the pin from her neck she turned around so that he could fasten it around her neck. She knew it wasn't something she could wear always. But with certain high collared dresses it would be possible. Or even simply slipped into the hollow between her breasts when it couldn't be worn. Kamaria would keep it with her whenever possible.
"It means so much that you thought of me. I love it, Ezra."
If he latched the necklace for her Kamaria would turn back so that she could see him. Still smiling. "I wish I could give you something in return." WORDS ● TAGGED ● NOTES

| Maybe he was being too bold and too generous. When she didn't immediately have a reaction -- possibly because she was shocked -- he was about to put it away and apologize for being too brash. She, however, seemed to breathe a sigh and cooed over how beautiful it was clutching it to her chest where she held it for a moment. A bright smile found its way to his lips and in that moment he wanted to hold her close. Feel her heart beat and drink in what was Kamaria. He knew better though. If they were seen and being so carelessly out in the open it spelled trouble. As it were that locket alone was enough to spell trouble. As she spoke his head tipped a bit as she turned to let him fasten it on to her. "I know it's risky but it's a shame, I don't get to do the petty things." he said quietly. He wanted to spoil her. Lavish her in wealthy gifts and show off the beauty she was but instead their love had to be hidden behind closed doors and hushed whispers. The intensity of it was alluring but sometimes he had enough of hiding.
"Why wouldn't I think of you?" he questioned her. "you aren't just another pretty face, Kai." He said. He wasn't like his father who got bored of women easily. That when one lost her spice that made her interesting he immediately replaced her. It wasn't how it worked for him. Women weren't objects. Perhaps he had a better heart than both of his parents and that was truly sad. Both of his parents were tainted by their ruling in some way shape or form. it made them blind to the real things in life but he supposed if he lived as long as they had -- he was getting there at least -- some things just weren't as exciting anymore. After he fastened it and she turned back towards him, his brownish eyes searched hers quietly. "Has he been kind to you?" not that he could do much about it but he would rather know than not. Then with a wistful but saddened smile, he waved it off. "Don't worry about it. I understand. I am just happy to see you for the short time I am graced."

Once the necklace was fastened Kamaria would turn around so that she was once again facing Ezra. She should have stepped back, the small distance between them signaled familiarity. But she wanted this. Surely the would hear someone coming and be able to step back... "I don't need the little things...I have you." He was so sweet and kind as always, too good for her and she knew it. But Kamaria had a secret that she feared would scare him away. She had been ill for a few days before the incident in the kings chambers. Since then it had been verified by one of the healers that she was indeed with child. But thats where the question came in...who was the father? The thought of telling Ezra worried her. What if he despised her for it? She couldn't say that she could blame him if he did pull away. Not knowing if she was carrying his father's child would be...she could only imagine very difficult for him. But she would rather tell him than have it trickle down through circles of gossip.
He said she wasn't just a pretty face and it made her chest ache. He always made her feel as if she were worth more than she truly was. Someone who he didn't have to share. Maybe it was selfish of her to need him like she did. To love him even when she was his father's mistress. She shouldn't have put him in the position he was in, but she had needed him and selfishly she loved him. The question about his father made her gaze fall away from his face. A small nod in response. Yes, Justus had been kind to her. Surprisingly so especially after she had soiled his personal quarters so. He wasn't a bad man, but he wasn't Ezra.
She reached forward to let her fingers trail over the top of his hand, her other hand reaching up to grip the locket around her throat. "Ezra I...I have something to tell you." She stepped back to the bench and sat down, a small incline of her head asking him to do the same. She was more afraid now than when the king had found out. She had much more to lose with Ezra than just her life.
"I have been feeling a little..ill lately. The healer said that....I'm pregnant, Ezra." She couldn't look at him. She didn't want to see his face when he heard the news. She clutched the locket like a promise, hoping against hope that Ezra wouldn't resent her for this. He was all she had, and all she wanted. She didn't know what might happen now. If the queen would have her sent away...if the king might. She had so many questions, but the ones she worried most about had to do with Ezra.
She still hadn't looked at him when she spoke again. Fear leaking into her voice despite how hard she tried to conceal it. "I don't know who...Please don't hate me, Ezra. I couldn't bear it."

| He supposed it shouldn't have come as that much of a surprise but with this sort of things it was far more delicate than one could anticipate. Was this going to be a sibling? Or his child? It was causing his heart to thud loudly in his ears and cause a little pain in his chest. Her words kept ringing in his ears over and over. "Pre--..." he felt overwhelmed with anger. Maybe at her or maybe it was at himself. He couldn't honestly tell which direction it was trying to go. Maybe it was himself because of how stupid he was or maybe at her because she had lured him into this game. Or maybe it was both of them? Or perhaps it was at Justice. If he had never brought her here they wouldn't be in this situation. That was when his emotions took a drastic turn and were now lingering a little bluer. "But you don't... know nor will you ever." but did it matter? It wasn't like the two of them could live happily ever after anyway. It wasn't in their cards and has never been. Once his father caught wind of the dishonesty in the relationship or whatever it was he thought he had with Kamaria then it was over. She would be taken... and what of himself? Banished? Shunned?
"I'm... just at a loss for words." he admitted almost in a defeated manner. "I'm not entirely sure how to feel." He couldn't be happy about it but he also couldn't entirely be sad neither. It was always a 50/50 chance on both ends. "I suppose you might as well think of it as Justice's after all." he didn't like the sound of it. He wanted her for himself but of course, he couldn't. "That way there isn't a chance of concern." He felt like he was pushing her away and perhaps in a way he was. Her safety he supposed. His possible childs safety. 'Congratulations.."

Kamaria was quiet as Ezra fought an inner battle. Silent even as his words cut deep. It was only after he said that congratualtaions that she would even make a sound. Treat it as if it were Justus' child. She had known that their affair would be best not coming to light for everyones sake. But hearing Ezra, the man she loved denouncing the child in her belly...it hurt. At that moment she would have rather taken a lashing that sit there another moment with the weight of Ezra's words on her chest.
"...alright." It took an incredible amount of restraint to not cry. To not tell him how bad she hurt. Had he not moments before been concerned with how his father treated her? Telling her she wasn't just a toy? But she was. To both of them she was little more than someone to warm their bed. With the king it was expected. With Ezra...she had hoped for more. She stood and dusted a bit of dirt from her dress with shaking hands.
"But...I'm not just a plaything....right, Ezra?" Her words were thick with emotion and Kamaria couldn't even bring herself to look at him. It was too painful. She had been so afraid of the king finding out. She had not expected that Ezra be the one to hurt with. She took small steps then as she moved toward the path that would lead out of the garden. Not crying, but the pain was clearly written on her face.
She had feared being banished from the immortal kingdom because she would lose Ezra. She had little left to fear now that he had left her, himself.

| He was a fool to believe love could conqure all but the glimmer of hurt reflecting in her eyes was a bit much to take. It caused his eyes to move off of her own as if ashamed. He inhaled quietly and deeply, holding it in his chest as she spoke and then hearing her lift to her feet and start off. It didn't take much thought for him to go after her, to grip her arm and turn her to face him again. It wasn't the most gentle he had ever used with her but it wasn't bruising only just causing a little sting in her arm if anything else. "That isn't fair, Kai." he said his voice hushed but stern. "Don't treat me like I am telling you anything you don't already know. You know damn well I have never treated you that way and you know damn well if the king has any sense of doubt of that child not being his ---.... where this could go." He stared her in the eyes the pressure and weight of this situation baring down on him. "I am not saying nor have I said anything to you to be cruel." He finally let go of her arm and stood there with a defeated posture. Shoulders slumping and for a moment he huffed. He hated seeing her upset but what more could he honestly do? "Is it fair for me to get attached to something that possibly is not mine? To get attached to something that very well could.....---" he didn't want to say the words but she had to know he was trying to protect her, right? "Take you away for good?"
Jaws were tight as teeth gritted. "I want you here, I need you here. If pretending the world is a happier place and that he is the father. Fine. At least it will keep you here." Betrayal wasn't something his father took lightly and she should know that. She should know what type of man Justus could be. The type of man she had heard stories about. He was no fool to be trifled with. "Please don't be mad at me." he said. "It's just not easy to be excited when other things are also at play here."

Kamaria tensed when Ezra grabbed her arm. "Let me go." She said quietly with her face still turned away from him. And then came his words. His reasoning. "Fair?...Ezra, do you really want to argue with me about what is fair?" She turned to look at him then, a dark curl falling across her face. It was blatantly clear that nothing in Kamaria's short life had been fair. Not being forced to live under the shadow of her lover, not falling in love with someone she couldn't have. Life wasn't fair but she wasn't running away from it. She knew very well the danger that she was facing by being in a relationship with Ezra. But she had been willing to risk it.
His words continued to fall and she felt her anger chipping away. "I didn't expect you to be happy. I'm not. But I didn't think that you would push me away like this. I-I needed you." Her lip trembled and she bit down on it to hide the quake. "I don't know how to do this, how to be a mother. I didn't...I didn't want a child. Not yet. Not as someone's mistress..." Her child would be a royal bastard, what an honorable title to hold.
"I wanted to stay here at any cost, to be with you. Even at the price of my own life. But Ezra....I can't raise my child here. Not under the stigma of an unwanted bastard. I can't make it pay the price for my mistakes." She was speaking carefully, her child. Because she didn't and would likely never know the father. She wouldn't call it Ezra's....not when he had told her to let Justus be the father as soon as he heard the news.
"I have to leave." But would she be allowed? Possibly carrying the king's child? She couldn't even lie and say it was someone elses because that would just lead to her death. "I need you Ezra. I just don't know how much longer I can pretend that I don't. He has been asking questions...I fear that Justus is suspicious of me."
