It has been a while since Khaal had visited his homeland. Things changed so little over there, that the ancient madman found it too dull and monotone to deal with. Immortals, living long lives as they tend to do, often sank into decades or even centuries of little change, and that reflected in all aspects of their existence. As such, when Khaal vanished from his manor, and appeared in the streets of a town in Imfala, he found it looking exactly like it did a decade ago. Or a century. Perhaps even a few of those.
Even the market, usually full of colorful people, was a drab thing to his ancient eyes. The same fare bought wares, and the same fare sold the same merchandise he'd seen countless times. The faces changed here and there, but little else.
Thankfully, Khaal was here for a reason, for once not simply meandering and seeking thrills. No, he had spotted an upcoming immortal captain, a woman that might be worth meeting. He couldn't as of yet figure out why, but he wasn't one to distrust his instincts when they lead him to someone of importance.
Some digging for information later, and he knew the woman would be visiting the market one of these days, if not today. So, dressed in finest clothes befitting an ancient nobleman, with a midnight blue cloak draped over his shoulders, Khaal idly perused various stalls. He had a slender sword at his hip, more for show though the immortal certainly knew how to use it.
Khaal was looking over a stall filled with books, contemplating buying something for one of his pets, when his target entered his peripheral vision. He couldn't quite see what she was doing, but he hurried nonetheless, buying a book - an autobiography of a somewhat famous and infamous fae healer that lived some two thousand years ago.
As he turned, book in hand, he spotted the young immortal captain going his way. It almost brought a smile to his face, but Khaal resisted the expression. Moving forward, the man pretended to be focused on his purchase, running a hand over the leather-bound book even as he dodged another wandering shopper, thus putting himself in a tight collision path with the immortal woman.
Khaal gave a gasp of false surprise as he tried weaving out of her way, the book slipping out of his fingers. Karlyn Rivera

A day off. How long had it been since she had actually taken a day off? Months? Years? Maybe even a decade…. It was hard to tell when you lived among the immortals. In honor of her day off, Karlyn had even put on a dress in her favorite color (green). Simple, but elegant and well made. Of course, she had a long knife hidden and strapped to her thigh under the dark green dress as well as a simply dagger resting beside her coin purse on her belt. How long had it been since she had worn such clothing to something other than a ball or party? Perhaps as long as it had been since she took a day off. It mattered not. Karlyn was capable of playing the warrior and the lady. She was neither one nor the other but rather, both.
Her day off had led her to the market to do some shopping. Being single and an army captain, Karlyn lived in a simple, two-roomed, militaristic home close to the barracks of her soldiers. It had been feeling a bit too militaristic for her taste lately, and she was hoping to find some décor to make it a bit homier So far, she had bought a new rug that had just enough color without being overly bright, to be delivered, and a few painting, which she carried with her.
Deciding that she had spent enough of her money for the day, Karlyn was on her way home when she spotted a vendor selling books. Oh, how she loved books! She began walking quickly toward the stall, hoping that the vendor would have something new for her to enjoy. In her rush, Karlyn bumped into the shoulder of someone. She saw the book fall from his hand and, with a soldier's honed reflexes, her hand shot out and she carefully caught the novel without dropping the paintings in her other hand.
“Oh! Pardon me.” she said quickly but calmly. “My apologizes, my Lord.” she continued with a respectful nod, noting his clothing and easily identifying him as a member of nobility. Karlyn could not remember ever seeing him before, though it was possible that she just could not remember. She was not the best with names and faces. Running her hand through her long, loose red hair, Karlyn offered the book back to him and noted the title. "The autobiography of a disreputable healer? An interesting choice."

Well, the immortal had to hand it to her. The woman knew how to dress in style. Khaal appreciated such things, tempted to do so especially up close. But he didn't let his eyes wander, keeping a stunned expression on his face as she caught his tumbling book. With quick reflexes, as he noted, befitting a captain of the army, though she didn't look the part at the moment.
"Oh no, no." Khaal began with a light chuckle, giving her an embarrassed smile as he took his book back. "The fault is all mine, milady. My apologies, and thank you." The ancient man paused then, pondering how to respond her question about the title, as though he hadn't expected someone to interrogate him on it.
"Ah, well." Khaal shrugged, lightly. "I am trying to educate a friend on creativity in healing practices. Flint Earmist here," He tapped the book with a nod. "...was something of a mad genius. And an old friend as well." A look of nostalgia flickered over his face, before the ancient man shook his head.
"But I digress, milady. Allow me to introduce myself. " The man stepped away, and gave her a gallant bow, cloack whispering around him. "I am Khaalius Sandrus. A pleasure to meet you."
Smiling softly at her, his blue eyes flicked over to the paintings in her grasp. "My, my. Seems you've made some interesting choices yourself, milady, if I may say so. Were you headed for the book stall as well?" The man said, one arm sweeping towards said stall, offering her to pass. "And... well... I don't suppose you'd allow me the pleasure of carrying your lovely paintings for you, mmm?"

Karlyn noted the nobleman’s stunned expression and was glad she had apologized for bumping into him. He even seemed a bit embarrassed though she did not quite understand why. She was the one who had almost knocked him over, and now it was her face that began to flush after the man mentioned knowing the healer she had just implied insult toward. It was so difficult to know an immortals age, and this one seemed to be quite old if he knew Earmist personally … The man had even called him a friend. He had an interesting choice of friends, it seemed.
“Creativity? Of course.” she responded, neutrally. She doubted she knew as much about Earmist as his friend here anyway. There was not a reason to start something she could not finish. Karlyn tended to only pick arguments she could win.
She drew herself from her thoughts as the man introduced himself. He bowed in a way that was almost chivalrous way and Karlyn could not help but to blush a bit deeper at the show of courtesy. It was rare that man treated like…well…. a woman. “Captian Karlyn Rivera.” she said, a bit curt, as she tried to maintain her dignity and not act like a blushing fool. She held out her hand for the more masculine gesture of seeking a handshake instead of curtsying.
She glanced at her painting as he gestured at them. They were simple things and not terribly expensive though she certainly would have spent more money if she had it. One displayed a scenic field with tall grass artfully blowing in the wind while another displayed an expanse of tree branches and beautiful birds. The third, and her favorite, showed a red wolf stalking through the forest. All the painting were, of course, painted for decoration, not accuracy, and were tasteful and elegant.
“I was indeed headed to search for a new book or two to read.” she responded, ignoring his request to carry her paintings. She merely tucked them under her arm. Her choice of décor suddenly felt private and personal under Khaalius’s gaze. And, of course, she did not need a man to carry her things for her. She was perfectly capable, thank you very much.
Realizing that the silence might soon become awkward, she sought something else to say. “Do you have any recommendations?” she asked, but wince inwardly as she realized that she had just invited him to help her shop.

In quite the contrast to himself, the woman before him used her words sparingly. It suited her, as it would any military commander of any sort, and Khaal had to make a mental note not to talk her ear off. Then again, if he played it right, he could practically monologue at her and he was certain she would lap it up. For a moment, the ancient man became tempted with that challenge, but the woman offering him her hand for a handshake drew him away from those thoughts.
Khaal took her hand and almost went to place a kiss upon it by sheer reflex. He tugged ever so slightly before a knowing smirk lit up his face, and he squeezed her hand a little, giving her a respectful nod. "Ahhh, Captain Rivera." The man hummed as he let her go. "I've heard about you." He said, and let that particular topic simmer as the conversation went on.
Khaalius nodded as she told him she was searching for a new book, noting the way she tucked away her paintings almost protectively from him. At war with herself, is what this one was. Blushing at his gallant bow, only to offer a handshake in return. Out in the world in a lovely dress, only to hide the paintings she bought, as if ashamed of her more artistic side. Back when he was a guardian of his family, he likely would've jumped at the opportunity to nurture and guide her to a better point in life. Now, however, he still ached to know how her mind works, but the benevolent intention was no longer there. There was boredom to quench, plots to make and power to grab.
So he rolled over her little protective gesture without a comment, not a motion giving away that he had noticed it. Or that he had noticed her subtle rejection of his offer. In fact, Khaal dropped the notion of carrying her paintings for her completely, acting as though he never offered in the first place.
"Recommendations?" Khaal said instead, raising a curious eyebrow. "Well, that depends on what kind of reading you're looking for. History? Mmm, you could go for 'Knights of the Lost Realm'. An interesting read of a human point of view on our history." The immortal nodded. "If philosophy suits you, I warmly recommend works of Vartan Morlee." He said, and tapped his lip for a moment, as though he needed to think more.
"I have been enjoying 'Dearests and Lovebirds' myself, recently. One can never resist a forbidden love story when it is written well." Khaal said with a light chuckle, his tone mischievous, almost flirtatious.
