Michael licked his lips nervously as he replied, "No?" His answer sounded uncertain and his cheeks reddened with embarrassment as the horse made it sound like it was common knowledge. He watched the change of environment, silently noting that this was a different route to what Michael had taken. It was probably a quicker route back home. He kept quiet for a few moments, his attention turned towards the trees. He could have sworn he heard something, but he attributed that to the forest animals, talking himself out of worry. They were moving slower now, and Michael assumed it was due to the rough terrain that Kai was walking on.
His eyes flickered from side to side, feeling a little uneasy. "Do you..." he trailed off and shook his head, "it doesn't matter." He shrugged to himself, his grip tightening ever so slightly. He was in human form now anyway, it wasn't like a big bird could come swooping down to eat him as he was too big as a human. He assumed no predator would like their chances with a stallion and a human. His shoulders relaxed a little and he began to hum very softly under his breath.
This time, he heard the distinct sound of a growl and as he turned his head to look he saw a cougar. It sprung towards him in a matter of seconds and he didn't even have the time to scream as his back hit the sharp rocks and roots of the forest floor. He was weighed down by the cougar, it's bad breath in his face. He tried to batter it away as it went for his neck, using all the force he had in his hands. He let out a mighty yell as if to scare it off, trying to hit it's face. The cougar just hissed at him, clawing right back at him.

Mordekai chuckled, which came out as a sort of rhythmic snorting. The poor boy. Had he nobody who knew the way of the wilds to teach him even the most basic of skills? It wasn't hard to tell the directions, so long as there were sun or stars in the sky. Even on a cloudy night there was still other ways to tell, if one knew how to look. He continued on, his pace varying slightly, but still relatively slow as he moved through the trees. It was not good ground here for a full out run, though part of him wished to tell Michael to cling tight and see just how fast he could go. Such wouldn't be smart though. He could tell from the boy's seat that he wasn't the most experienced rider. Unlike Khaal, who could stick to his back like a burr, bareback or not, he would probably throw Michael on the first short turn.
Slowly, the boy relaxed, a gentle hum coming from him. It wasn't a familiar tune to Kai, but it was pleasant enough, and so he didn't object. Dusk would be arriving before too long, and then he would hush him. That would be the time to avoid making what sounds one could. But it wasn't much farther along that he distinctly heard the sound of a low growl. His pause at the noise perhaps was their downfall. A cougar leaped from above, and his ears flattened as he felt Michael fly off of his back.
He didn't hesitate. Even as Michael shouted, and the cougar pulled back a paw to swipe at him, Kai let out a sound eerily close to a scream. A stallion's challenge, he launched the short distance, his hooves skidding to a halt not far from Michael's bare body, and he threw out several blows with his front hooves, balancing over his hind. His ears were flat to his skull, eyes white around the edges, and teeth bared. Perhaps it was not as intimidating as the sharp teeth of a predator, but it was obvious that he meant business.
Front hooves slammed into the ground to one side, and Kai used the momentum to spin and fling his back hooves out in a vicious kick. The sickening sound of bones cracking came as both hooves solidly met the cougar's ribs, flinging the cat off of Michael.

His back ached and his arms stung, blood weeping out of the scratches. The cougar didn't have much time to attempt anything else before a blood-curdling screech hit his senses. Michael couldn't do anything but watch as the stallion slammed his hooves into the big cat, fear to warn him to stay still or he would get in the way. He could hear his heart pounding in his ears and he couldn't seem to focus on anything other than the two large beasts. Michael knew in his heart that Kai was protecting him but all he wanted to do was get away from both of them. He took a short breath, trying to push past the fear that shook his entire body.
Using his adrenaline, he stood up on his shaking legs. In his hand, he held a sharp rock to defend himself with. It would be incredibly draining and painful to shift into fox form so he decided to stay in human form. He was much harder to kill while he was a human but he couldn't defend himself as well. He tried to ease his breathing out and found that he couldn't take deep breaths. He tried to swallow and found his mouth dry with terror. Michael kept his eyes focused on the cougar, watching as it began to get up again. He was unsure whether it was going to come at them again or just limp away.
He didn't want to kill it, although the wounds that Kai had already inflicted would probably eventually kill it anyway. He knew he was being silly, as the big cat had just tried to kill him. The realisation began to sink in and Michael's eyes widened. He had almost been killed and the only reason he was still alive was that Kai had stepped in and saved him. The tremors in his hand only grew worse and he pushed back the glaze of tears that threatened to overcome him. He could feel the torn skin on his shoulder blades and the bruises that had already started to form.

Kai didn't wait for the cougar to get up. He leaped past Michael as the boy rose, and all but pounced upon the cougar. The cat was beginning to rise as his large hooves contacted its body again, knocking it back to the ground. Several more times he slammed into the feline's body with his hooves, splattering blood up his legs and around the ground, until finally, with a primal scream of victory, the stallion reared up, his hooves coming down together, upon the cat's head. It came with a sickening crunch of bone and the splatter of grey matter from the animal's brain.
It was a few moments, his sides heaving with adrenaline ridden breaths before the stallion shook himself. His front legs were splattered to the knee with red blood and grey gore. The cougar lay still, the threat dead. Kai looked around alertly for a few moments, checking for other danger in the area. He could not find any, and with that, he turned back to Michael, stepping toward him. Once he realized that the boy wasn't moving away from him, Kai approached with a bit more confidence, and sniffed over him, checking what wounds he'd gathered across his shoulders and front. His voice was calm as it came to the boy's mind. -You can put the rock down, kid.-
Gently, Kai nudged Michael gently, smelling the fear and shock from him, and he lipped at Michael's chest, where it wasn't scratched from claws. -It's all good now. We should get going again, before critters come to feed, and to get you home sooner, rather than later. Unfortunately, I think it'd be my hide if you didn't get there safely now.- Gently, he nudged Michael again, and rather than spend too much time seeking a stump or a rock, he simply moved to where there were less rocks, and carefully knelt onto his front legs, putting his withers at a height that the boy could mount.

Michael watched in horror as the stallion rushed forward to finish the cougar. It was like he couldn't tear away his aghast face as the big feline was crushed underneath the stallion's giant hooves. Blood splattered everywhere and the werefox just stared as the huge predator stayed very still and very dead as Kai slowly approached him. His eyes flickered to each one, uncertain of what he should be paying attention to. He knew the intelligent thing to do would be to drop the rock but fear made him unsure and unsteady on his feet. Michael went rigid and still as the horse got close, urging him to drop the stone. He glanced down at it, his fist curled around it so hard that his fingers were white.
He tried to even his breathing, but that just caused tears to come flooding to the surface. He managed to push them back by gritting his teeth and squeezing his eyes shut. Michael dropped the rock, his watery eyes turning back to the horse that was now very close, hooves covered in all sorts of blood and gore. He winced at this graphic image and his arms and chest reminded him of their suffering, and his back didn't shut about its pain. The werefox bared the sniffing, recognising it as a way for the horse to check that he was alright. He jolted back as Kai lipped at him and a ghost of a smile tugged at his mouth. It felt quite tickly and although he didn't want to admit it, he was a little soothed by Kai's soft words. He followed the horse, expecting to climb on a rock and have to scramble onto his back. Instead, Kai lowered himself to the ground.
Michael tried not to show his relief as he got on, gripping tightly and moving his arms to grasp the mane. He leaned forward a little so that he could stay stable when the horse got up. His back hurt at very movement and Michael was sure that his adrenaline had worn off. His shaking hadn't stopped and he was still barely holding back the tears. He couldn't believe everything had just happened so quickly and that he had been so useless. Michael barely noticed when tears began to trickle down his face, only knowing due to the warmth on his face. His shiver got worse as a cold breeze brushed passed, reminding them that winter was still here.

Kai stayed still as Michael clambered back on. He waited until he felt the boy’s fingers tangle into his mane. After it seemed like he was secure, Kai stood once more, lurching slightly with the movement. It was not a motion that the stallion enjoyed really. Most often he didn’t kneel because it always put him so awkward, and more so, vulnerable. The scent of blood and gore from his hooves made his stomach turn, as always. But he was used to it, and swallowed the feeling bac as he began to move again, making his motions smooth and yet swift, to cover more ground. -Sorry, kid. I should have been more alert.- How long had it been since he had been taken by surprise? A long time. Perhaps he had been due to mess up. At least Michael still lived. He was scraped up, but no worse for wear. The shock that was so obvious would wear off before long.
Feeling the boy's shiver, Kai tossed his head slightly and snorted. One ear flicked back, one eye looking backwards to see the goosebumps raised upon the boy's leg from the cold. -You too cold kid? Do we need to take it slower and have you as a fox? You'd be warm at least, then.-

Michael didn't respond to Kai's apology, not believing that he should have apologised. There was no way that the attack had been Kai's fault, no matter whether the horse hadn't been alert. He supposed that if he had been elsewhere the cougar may have just avoided the stallion altogether. It was usually that a cougar would attack him, but he was unusually small for his age so his size may have been an incentive. In any case, the apology didn't help him feel any better, instead, it just made him cry harder. He tried very hard to keep himself from vocalising it. He hated feeling like he wasn't in control of himself and his emotions. Michael's shivers continued, and he was tempted to remove a hand from Kai's mane just to rub his chilled arms.
He shook his head, leaning forwards so he could wipe the tears from his eyes with his arms. He hissed as his arms stung with the movement and he breathed deeply, glad that he was able to do so. As Kai asked him if he was cold and offered the suggestion, Michael had to consider it. He knew that he would be warmer as a fox, but he was unsure how much energy it would take out of him. As it was, he was drained and in pain. He had never shifted when he was in pain or wounded. What if something went wrong? That was a chance that Michael refused to take and he ended up shaking his head. It took him a moment to remember that Kai couldn't see him so he answered in a weak voice, "No. I'll stay as a human. It would delay us too much. I- I just want to get home." His voice broke a little at the end and his grip got tighter.

Kai made a soft chuffing sound, one ear still angled to listen to Michael. Barely, he saw the boy shake his head in answer to changing, his voice coming only moments after. Sympathy slid through the warrior, and he felt Michael's grip in his mane tighten. The boy's voice cracked and for the first time in a while, Kai wished he'd had a saddle, or even a band with stirrups attached with him. It would make riding so much easier.
His pace increased slightly, and became smoother. -Hold tight, kid. I can lope through here if I'm careful. So long as you've got a grip, I can keep you on.- He gave Michael a few moments to prepare himself before breaking into a gentle, rocking canter. His hooves landed solidly, thudding into the ground in a steady, triple beat rhythm. His tail flagged behind him and if a horse could smile, he would be. His ears perked forward into the wind, and he stretched his neck out, enjoying the way the wind flowed over him.
The entire time, he kept a close attention to how Michael was seated and shifting on his back. It was subtle, but the stallion shifted constantly to ensure that the boy never slid too far to one side or the other

Michael shuddered as they broke into a canter, trying his move his hips in time with the horse. His eyes were wide and his hands clutched Kai's mane with an almost death grip. As they cantered across the land, Michael felt his back stung and ache with every movement. He knew that the stallion was doing all he could to help him stay on but Michael just wanted to get off and stop. He took slow breaths to try and ease the pain, surprised at how sore it was. The werefox knew that he didn't have a very high tolerance for pain but he should be able to ignore his back and arms for the time being. A sort of anger that was targeted at himself clogged up his throat and he had to swallow to push it back down. He shook his head and kept his eyes focused on the path ahead of them. At least the shock had worn off and he was feeling a lot less uneasy. The tears had all dried up now and he could see more clearly. The sun only just started it's decent out of the sky and the moon wasn't out yet, so Michael wasn't too concerned. He did keep in mind Kai's warning about the other predators becoming more active at night so he was attentive to the sounds around him. He silently wondered what would have become of him if the stallion hadn't have found him and he tried to ignore the shudder that ran through his body at the thought. After they had been travelling for about twenty minutes, he leaned forward, starting to get a little unbalanced. "Ca-can we please stop or slow down for a minute?" He asked, his voice nervous and quiet. He didn't want to slow them down more than they should but he needed to give his back and jittery knees a break. [/blockquote]

It wasn't long before his ears flicked back as sound came from the boy riding him. Kai sighed slightly, pulling up and slowing per the boy's request. This was not going to be so simple as he had hoped. Silently, he reminded himself that Michael was no warrior, hardened to hours on horseback, travelling at speeds that would kill lesser men and beast. So he slowed, and after a few more minutes of a gentle trot and then a walk, he came into a small clearing and slid to a halt. He took a deep breath, and let it out before speaking once again. -Slide off then for a bit, boy. Even a short run can cause colic if I don't walk a bit after. I know you've not had it but trust me, it hurts. Y'see any water nearby?- He raised his head and sniffed at the air. There was a stream somewhere near, he could smell it. but not hear it.
Once Michael slid down his side, the dappled stallion began to pace in circles, simply keeping moving. His tail flicked back and forth and his deep brown eyes glanced towards the sun that was heading swiftly toward the horizon. It would be dark soon. Bad times for travelling, as far as he was concerned. Unlike most were-folk, who's eyesight was improved in their animal form, his was not. His hearing and sense of smell were acute, accompanied by a glorious prey-instinct that kept him alert. But in the dark, he was often nearly blind as a horse. He'd rather be a human after night fell, most of the time.
Better yet, he'd rather be in a warm bed, with some company. No chance of that this night. His gaze looked back to Michael. -You okay, kid?-

The disappearance of one of Blood Rose’s youngest had not gone unnoticed. It did take some time, of course, for a head count to be taken and for different members to be surveyed in trying to discern his whereabouts. But, Marissa was a persistent one. She had also been with the pack long enough to know who precisely to appeal to in seeking swift action. Alvina herself, for reasons many of the younger members could only speculate, was particularly tuned toward the youth. Having founded Blood Rose for the benefit of a better future, their youngest were the most vital to ensuring that future. She, too, had also been denied the pleasure of her own children, perhaps taking a vicarious solace in helping to ‘parent’ others. It was a job she took seriously.
That was, of course, the reason why she had accompanied the patrol out. With her experience and familiarity with their members, she was also one of the most qualified trackers in their ranks. Having finally set out into their territory, her nose dutifully sought out Michael’s scent among the brush. It took some time, but with a pair of wolves, a tiger, and a bear alongside her, it wasn’t long before they fanned out, following the direction of the scent.
Unexpectedly, the sound of hoofbeats caused her to still in the middle of her pursuit. The sound was not as heavy as she might’ve expected – they had such a beast among their ranks, and galloping itself produced a deeper, reverberating sound – but softer. Pacing? Her ears pricked, her voice echoing to the other pack members that lingered nearby. With a silence befitting her form, the she-wolf slipped among the ferns, allowing her coat to camouflage her in the shadows. Approaching the sound, body low in the brush, it was not long before her crimson eyes found the source of the sound: a dappled grey horse. Her lips pulled back, briefly exposing her teeth as she drank in his scent. And then, just as quickly as she spied him, his body was carried forward, revealing the very mark she’d been looking for.
‘I found him.’ Alvina allowed her voice to project, not just to the patrol nearby, but to the stranger and the boy as she emerged from her hiding place. In clear view of the pair, her eyes, one scarred and one unblemished, flickered between the stallion and the boy. Unwavering, they fell to Michael. ‘Michael. Are you alright?’ The lingering scent of blood clung to him, causing her hackles to rise slightly as her attention again flickered to the stranger… who was altogether uncomfortably close to their border, despite the circumstance.

Michael was very glad as they stopped, and he only half-heartedly listened to Kai speak. He slid off as quickly as he could without hurting himself and sat down on the ground. His thighs were sore from gripping and his back hurt even more from the riding. He shrugged when the horse asked about water, being able to taste it in the air but not knowing where it was. Things were starting to smell familiar and he tried to sniff harder but the wind was going the wrong way. He blinked slowly, watching the horse pace around trying to ignore the scent of his own dried blood. He studied his arms, looking at the long gashes that stretched across them. His left arm was still dribbling blood and that concerned him a lot.
He glanced up at the horse, who had just asked if he was okay. "I-I'm not sure," he replied. He wasn't feeling that light-headed, so he mustn't be suffering from blood loss. He worried his lip through his teeth and glanced around. The fact that they were so close yet so far from home made his stomach flop uneasily. He didn't know if he could make it home. He was in the most pain he remembered ever being. He couldn't see the scratch that lay just under his collarbone without hurting himself so he just sat there, shivering as the cold breeze brushed past.
Michael looked around again, he could have sworn he had heard something. Michael went stiff as he heard the mental voice of his Pack Alpha. He searched the bushes for her and he shook his head as he caught a glimpse of her pelt in the bushes. Had some of the pack come to look for him already? He thought that it would take at least a day of him being missing for a search party to be sent out. Michael scrambled to his feet, ignoring the fiery pain that it caused in his back. He splayed his hands and arms, replying quickly. "I'm not great, but please don't hurt Kai. He helped me."
Michael winced at how weak his voice sounded in the presence of the intimidating but usually friendly Alpha. He glanced towards at the stallion and then back at the werewolf. He had seen what those sharp hooves could do to a predator and although he was sure that Alvina could take Kai, he didn't either of them to get hurt. He took a step towards the werehorse that had saved his life and helped him get this far. He couldn't let Kai get attacked by Michael's own pack as it would be like a slap in the face for helping someone. He didn't want to repay the kindness with violence and pain.

Kai had been too focused upon Michael, worried about the way the boy didn't really respond to him verbally, and when he did, it was soft, and shaky. Shock, he decided. The violence of the cougar and his own actions in consequence were too much to handle atop having gotten lost and everything else. As he decided this, a feeling nagged at him. That cursed prey instinct that insisted he was being watched. The stallion's skin shivered in irritation at the feeling, and he tossed his head up to scent the wind, just in case. It was hard to tell if there was anyone near. They were near enough to the border that there was a constant, stale sort of scent that just permeated the area, of a variety of beasts.
But only moments later, as he was turning in his pacing, his breathing finally slowing down, a voice broadcasted into the clearing, and his head tossed up once again. His ears turned, searching as though the voice was physical, and only moments later a scarred she-wolf stepped out of the ferns and into the clearing. Kai snorted softly, shifting to face the wolf dead on. Automatically, he arched his neck, but resisted the urge to paw at the ground. Instead he simply planted his hooves and turned his head slightly to eye the wolf better.
Amusement came slightly when Michael shifted, putting himself between Kai and the wolf. Was this his aunt? Maybe. Definitely one with authority, he could tell that much by the manner she had stepped from the bushes, confident, wary. Kai snorted once again. His mental voice was soft, baritone and gravelly. -I think we'll be fine, kid. There's no need for conflict, and anyone here can see that.- For a moment, Kai was distinctly reminded that his kind most often lived in a pack of sorts. He was a loner, a rogue, at best. For that matter, he hadn't even learned how his own people's culture was until later in life, because most of his memories that he knew were real were with Khaal. He had not been raised among his own.
With a soft snort, he lowered his head to put it more upon Alvina's level, forcing himself to be polite, rather than his usual gruff attitude. -Greetings.-

His gangly form quickly scrambled upward, his body settling between she and the stallion in no short order of time. Her ears flicked backward briefly from their alert position, before swiveling forward again. 'He's not of our concern. You are at the moment.' She was wary, though. Years of fighting with other clans, years of grasping to maintain hard-won territory - those things did that to someone. Her words were the best consolation she could offer the pup, as her nose twitched at his scent. The blood...
It didn't take long, particularly with the way he had positioned himself, to spy the injury to his chest. Were the newcomer not present, she might've phased then and there to survey the wound. Nose twitching, she sent out another probe to the others in the area, a soft mental voice: ‘Slowly.’ The wolves, the bear, the tiger; all would arrive soon, she knew. She wanted no surprises, nothing to spook the newcomer... who seemed to have helped deliver the pup back into her midst.
Eyes alert, it was the stallion's voice - Kai, as Michael had called him - that called her attention from the boy. He even went so far as to lower his head. It was a gesture that granted her some comfort, at least demonstrating some courtesy compared to others who had come before him, as she moved to narrow the distance between them slightly. In the distance, an audible approach from the others in the patrol sounded. ‘Thank you for returning him to us.’ One of her ears briefly tilted to the sound, before she focused again on him. ‘My name is Alvina. I am the Alpha of Blood Rose.'
Luminous scarlet orbs brightly shifted to Michael, as the nearer proximity allowed her to glimpse the injury better. ‘That doesn’t look like something a hoof caused. Would you like to tell me happened?’ He didn’t appear to be dying, only shaken… Even if it looked like a fair injury.
Behind her, brush cracked. Shifting slightly, the wolf backed up a hair as the others appeared - several sets of eyes peering from amongst the darkness falling beneath the trees.

Michael wasn't calmed by Kai's words, his eyes flickering inbetween in his pack leader and the stallion that had rescued him from predators and the wilderness. His eyes narrowed and he clenched his jaw, not liking that Alvina had said that the werehorse was none of his concern. His fingers twitched as he held back a sullen retort. He thought that Kai was all of his concern, since he was the one that had brought him here and it was only his knowledge that snapping at the old alpha would cause more trouble than it was worth that stopped him from expressing his thoughts.
He was stiff as he watched the two creatures interact, and he flinched as he heard others approaching. He didn't know what to pay more attention to, the predators approaching or the werehorse and werewolf. He decided to turn his attention to his alpha who promptly thanked Kai. Michael's shoulders released just a little bit of tension and he breathed a little easier. He didn't think that she would attack someone that she had thanked and introduced herself to. That wouldn't stop the others, however, so he didn't relax completely. He felt completely out of the loop, being the stark naked and surrounded by animals. He glanced down and noticed where the wolf's gaze was and almsot winced. He didn't want her to get to concerned and he stopped himself from covering it with hand.
He liked his lips, shifting his weight. He cast his eyes towards the dappled stallion and cleared his throat, trying to strengthen his voice. "I got lost while hunting and Kai offered to get me home. On our way back we were attacked by a cougar and I was pushed off his back. Kai uh..." Michael swallowed as the image of the stallion bludgeoning the big cat flashed across his vision, "K-Kai killed it after it got a few scratchs." He stopped himself from shuddering but barely. Another cold wind swept across his bare skin and he wrapped his less pained arm loosely across his body. It was winter and it was cold.
Michael realised that he should probably show the alpha the injuries on his back so turned around so that his back was facing the wolf. He hadn't seen it yet but it felt more horrible than his arms and chest combined. The rocks and roots he had fallen had been sharp and solid. It felt like he had a few cuts on his back as well as some developing bruises. He hoped that his aunt had enough money to buy some paste for his back, or he would have a very painful recovery process.
