Finished with briefings Niera had joined her unit in ceremony of a good meal and waited for the darkness to creep over the forest before making her way to find the queen. Passing by she noted that even in war the elves were known for their grace. Unlike the other races their tents were all made of fine linens and their armour was built for lithe, swift movement. Glancing across the way she watched the mannerisms of the foreign army, they were still afraid. Peering eyes followed her at every corner, watching her, measuring her level of confidence against their own fears as she walked. Niera had hoped that the arrival of the immortal aid would at least be enough to bolster the confidence of Luiniel's army and yet, despite their years of training they did not believe in their ability to defeat this foe. Even the immortal lieutenant had her own doubts of whether she would make it out alive. What should would not allow though was for her or her men to go down without giving it the hardest fight the creature had ever encountered. Thankfully Niera did not have to endure their starring for long, the queen's tent was easier to find than she had originally anticipated. A little larger and more intricately designed than the rest, the outer walls were decorated in elegant fabricates in colours of green and gold, with the elven banner strung along the side. "I am here to speak with Queen Luiniel," the lieutenant approached one of the two beautifully armoured soldiers that stood guarding the entrance. " Sorry Lieutenant, The Queen is not currently available," the guard solemnly saluted his respect to the foreign dignitary " maybe if you come back in a while?" " I will wait." Stripped from her title Niera was one among many, an individual among men all served to fight a common cause and so in the spare time she had to offer she joined the other men in a tent not far from the queen's own. Connection was the pinnacle of life that allowed men and women to feel moments of joy and so she allowed herself to share stories of men that had faded into legends and mythology. With her hands she drew marks into the dirt, of diagrams that emphasised that the struggle and the hope behind the tales that she weaved. More than an immortal lieutenant, these were the moments when life came back down to earth and together they were people. Laughing, talking, crying with men whose stories would at least once be told among each other. As time went on more gathered around the fire in a large ceremony of voices united against the darkness that threatened to steal their hearts. She reminded them to be proud, she reminded them that just because there was struggle ahead together they would shoulder the responsibility of their lives and together they would be strong. Hope was not lost, for even in their darkest hour this small group of elves remembered the joy they were fighting to keep. This was her power. Niera raised her flask " May the light watch over us all," each of the men cheered. For what little she could accomplish here, maybe at least one platoon of the elven army would hold their heads the following day. For hours this lasted until finally another figure approached, awaiting her to follow. Luiniel Ashwin

For hours she pondered the nature of this visit. What could the Immortal truly have to discuss with her? Was it about this upcoming battle? Was it about the state of their two kingdoms? With so many possibilities she decided that she would make no assumptions. Finishing a prayer to the gods that watched over her, she rose to her feet. Turning on heel, her cloak "wooshed" behind her as she made for the tents. Unlike her soldiers, she was not afraid of what was to come. If it was her destiny to perish in this battle then so be it. Luiniel believed in fate, believed that the gods revealed their paths when it was time for them to know. One simply had to be patient and live the best life they could. Passing a few soldiers quietly, they moved to bow but she waved them off. It was hard not to be recognized when you gave off a natural aura of light. The Queen paused for only a moment when she found Niera giving her time to follow. Out of respect for the woman she came herself instead of sending someone to fetch her. While she was a royal, she did not act as one in most circumstances. The air of superiority that surrounded most nobility did not exist around her. Luiniel valued the words and ideas of those around her more than her own. Once she was sure she had been noticed she made for a nearby tent. It had been set up so that this would be private. No crest, no true markings so no one would know where she was. Ducking into the flap as they approached, she approached a long table set inside and took a seat. Accommodating as always, food had been prepared for such a meeting. " Before you begin I would like to state that for the purpose of this meeting no titles at the table. I am not the queen nor you an officer in your army. You may speak however your heart deems fit." she said softly. Her face remained quite passive as she spoke, it was often hard to read an Elf's emotions. It was not something they did intentionally, it was a natural reflex to mask emotion. She took a seat and gestured for Niera to do the same. Niera Venrali

Side by side a queen whose light followed her with every footfall and a lieutenant whose inner serenity was unmatched by the world that surrounded her, although both as elegant as each other in different ways one was less proud than the other whose natural air of authority was hard to miss. Welcomed through by the lady herself, Niera's eyes wandered across the selection of foods prepared for the feast, the food was the thing that told her that in spite of the queen's neglect for her own title this was not in fact a place where the lieutenant could speak her heart. Talking with hearts were for people that had time for them to break, time to allow the sorrows of the past to catch of them, time to pretend they had the fortitude to carry on through life focusing upon what happened. For some of them, maybe they did. Niera did not. Stationing herself beside the door Niera was apprehensive whether or not the elven queen would allow her presence much longer given the reticence for neglecting her title and the responsibility that followed it. " Forgive me Luiniel," tread carefully with the words that followed " It would be disrespectful of me to deny what you wish to be called, but whether I am in a tent with a queen or a shoemaker I am always responsible for the lives of the men that put faith in my leadership. Especially so far from home." Relaxation was a luxury Niera didn't often feel the need to indulge in, serenity had its own way of making it to her and in the moments where life looked its most dire she always found a solution. She was at ease with the responsibility she had been given. Niera stepped with slow, proud purpose as she closed the large gap that had caused a distance between them and gently placed a kiss to the queen's forehead with the same heart full of love she had for the denizens that came for her aid at home " May the light watch over you," the hushed whisper of her silk laden voice fell from her lips as she took another step back, looking down upon Luiniel with a smile as bright and as warm as the soft morning sun. " I have come for a variety of reasons. Firstly the immortals would like to extend my presence as one of good faith," Niera carefully lowered herself onto the seat that had been offered to her, one leg crossed over the other "secondly my interests lay in medicines and I wondered if you indulge me in a few things but most importantly, watching you out there I was worried for you. How are you Luiniel?" There was a sincere emphasis in the last of her words, there was no preparing the young woman for what was about to happen in the following day. Though maybe she could offer a small comfort. Luiniel Ashwin

The hesitation did not go unnoticed. Perhaps she had over stepped by assuming that this meeting required all of this. Despite being trained to fight she was born a noble woman first. It was hard to forget all of the etiquette that came with such a birth. Of course none of her thoughts reflected on her face. Instead she tried to think of something to say that would put Niera at ease. Before she could say anything, however, the Lieutenant crossed the gap and placed a kiss on her forehead. She was taken by surprise of course but did very little to react at first. " There is nothing to forgive. It was my mistake, perhaps such comforts do not belong on the front lines." she said softly. It was clear that as she spoke she was trying to gather her thoughts once more. Luiniel was hopeful, almost dangerously so. The idea that the Immortals would seek to gain the friendship of the Elves was intriguing and exciting to her. At this point they were perhaps the only nation which sought to do so. " We appreciate the support. Your people can rest assured that if the situations were reversed I would give whatever I could." she said, placing her hands on the rests of her chair. " I could perhaps assist you with medicine if I knew what sort you were seeking." she replied warmly. Healing was a specialty of hers, perhaps the one thing she truly excelled at. But when asked about herself the supernatural aura of light about her dimmed for a second. Perhaps she was more terrified than her soldiers and they sensed that in her. She drew a breath and exhaled softly. " Death lurks on my door step and it is my duty to contain it. Yet I am not my husband, I do not know what it is I should do, what is expected of me." she said. The Elven Kingdom was a mess behind the curtain, an absentee king who's bastard son lived openly at the palace as a glaring sign of his lack of respect. " I am okay as one can be when their choices might mean the end of anothers life." she said before raising a goblet of wine to her lips. Perhaps she was too trusting to reveal such emotions. Niera had suspected uncertainty behind the trained facade of bravery the elven queen had held in the presence of her men and with a quiver of fear reflected in the flicker of her shining aura, the queen had confirmed it to be the truth. Attentively listening to each word as if the world outside of that conversation no longer mattered, the lieutenant felt a strong wave of empathy for the young royal washing over her and waited for Luiniel to finish what she needed to say before considering to speak. Conditioned by the being that gave it, love could be as malleable as an ocean of water. It could be raging, it could be calm, it could be invasive, it could even drown you but sometimes, if a person knew how; they could swim in it and bask in the joy that it brought to them. And in those simple, vulnerable moments when Luiniel's words reached Niera's ears, those were the moments when the immortal felt love for her. One being to another with fears and hopes, responsibilities and hard choices; Niera was aware of the queen's discomfort and discarded formality. Boldly rising from her seat, Niera took the stool she had been offered and placed it beside Luiniel's. " There is no short answer and there is no place to forget those that rely on our leadership and judgement," the lieutenant began, lowering to sit at the queen's side " that does not mean to say we have to be formal because of what we are." Ignoring her own desire to learn more of elven medicine for the moment, Niera decided that Luiniel was more important right now. Reaching with one hand Niera took Luiniel's into her own " This is not a quest for death, Luiniel. We are here to protect life." Speaking as softly as she would to a frightened child scared of the night terrors that lurked in the dark, an old and knowing look entered Niera's timeworn eyes " Left unchecked this plant will grow. It will become more powerful, more territorial and maybe even more hungry. By doing this now your soldiers, your forces and more importantly you allow the safety for hundreds of men, women and children of all races to be able to live, love, eat and sleep without fear." A pause came to the lieutenant's words as she allowed their intention to sink in. " Many will die," she inhaled a deep breath and comfortingly tightened her grip over Luiniel's fingers " but they will die to save many more. Every one of your men knows the cost of being a soldier, a fighter, a protector of your kingdom and they are here fighting anyway. Honour them. Know they have trained their wholes lives for this. Believe in them in the same way they believe in you, the queen that is willing to sacrifice everything to protect her people." Loosening her grip Niera slowly withdrew her hand back into her lap, hope lifting the intensity that the outer-worldly, crystalline tones of her voice demanded. " Among these men, myself and my squadron will be present and are proud to fight alongside the elven armies. You are not alone." Luiniel Ashwin

It was terribly confusing to watch the Lieutenant seem hesitant of her request and then take it to heart. When she moved the stool to sit closer to the queen she wondered if it was by choice or due to her request. Elf or not people had a tendancy to do what she asked simply because of who she was. She gently squeezed Niera's hand with her own before some of her light returned. Luiniel looked at the Immortal now with a sadness behind her eyes. It was hard to admit but she was unsure that she wanted this life. The duty to the masses was suffocating, her life did not belong to her at all anymore. It had twisted into something she no longer recognized and she despised that. " I have not forgotten them, how could I? The burden of responsibility falls upon me alone and it is suffocating." she replied quietly. The idea that people had to die for this was not something she could easily accept. It was childish to believe that they could save everyone. She knew this and yet she stilled hoped for such an outcome. It destroyed her very soul a little at a time to know she had to spend lives. For safety, for security and sometimes even less. " How can you be so calm about spending lives? It does not matter what they died for, I have to live with knowing that my orders are what consumed them." she said almost bitterly. It did not matter to her that some were willing. Those who did not ask for this would be consumed as well because they had no choice in the matter. Having lived through a war it was clear that she was tired. Not in the physical sense, but the spiritual way. Though her years might seem short to an Immortal, she spent a good portion of them fearing war and seeing death everywhere. How could she face this knowing that she might not be as willing to give everything as Niera seemed to be. She laughed sadly, " In hindsight perhaps we should have hired a monster hunter. At least then this might not be as tragic as my thoughts suggest." she said in jest.
