In pursuit of an artefact Niera acquired during the battle of the bloody red ball, the lieutenant had requested to go on a stealth mission to discover what it was. Accompanied by Callahan, one of the more trust trackers in the immortal's unit. They had hoped that this artefact could maybe lead to a clue about what happened over at the ball and search for a few more answers. Where it had eventually lead them however, was a dark, murky and foreboding place filled with the creatures of the dark. Uncomfortably dressed in her elegant black leathers, Niera despised going anywhere near a swamp. Dirt had to be the most inconvenient part of her job, along with the several hundreds smells of rank rot and decay attacked her nostrils. What she would have given to be in a parlour of perfume right that second.
"We're close by," Callahan whispered from overhead, signalling her to move around a dangerously concealed bog of water. Unlike her Callahan was unhindered by the terrain, his sense of nature and surroundings were unparalleled by anybody's that she had ever seen. Wordlessly weaving her way around the mounds of dirt that loomed on the edges of the murky water, Niera was internally cursing in frustration.
"How much longer?" disdain ran through Niera's silk voice, evoking laughter from her subordinate. Disgruntled by her surroundings the Lieutenant gave the man a defeated look and sighed, begrudgingly sinking her boots footfall by footfall into the never ending trail of sludge. "Remind me why I go on these things Callahan."
"Because you love your people. And you like leeches," the immortal tracker returned, waiting for her with a sly grin painted across his smug face.
"For my people and leeches" Niera repeated looking up to the road ahead "They better have my damned herbs for my bath when I return." To the delight of a few leeches and much to her own chagrin or fortune the pair of them had a small encounter of Niera dipping her leg inside of the water. Needless to say the journey there had been exceedingly uncomfortable, wet and squelchy after she'd managed to use her medical training to remove the blood suckers from her skin into a water jar filled.
Laughing, Callahan touched the small figurine to the map they had been following for a while now. Why it lead them to the god forsaken arse end of nowhere, the pair had no idea; only that it was probably a good place for a hiding criminal. A few hours passed and the mud wasn't giving an inch. Covered halfway up to her ankles Niera was relieved when they finally reached some semblance of a clearing with a large dead tree that had a hollowed entrance at the base of it, not far from where they were. "This can't be where we are going," the lieutenant grimaced at the sight of yet another cave.
"It is."
"Really?"
"Yup."
"Another cave."
"That definitely resembles a cave, lieutenant."
"...Why has always gotta be caves."
Niera swiped the cave and the bizarre little figurine from his hands, watching the thing move over the map toward their destination. He had been right, they really did have to go through the dark forsaken cave. "Wait. Maybe it's over the hill," the lieutenant pointed to the area on the map hoping to not have to go underground again. Still smug with his wide toothy grin Callahan shook his head "Come on Lieutenant."
Defeated the immortal eventually lit a torch and followed Callhan into the creepy hollow. It must have served and some kind of underground sanctuary for something sinister, but what? Down, down, down the earth curved in narrow pathway as the fetid creatures of the underground lurked on the walls, creeping and crawling through the mud. Eventually leading into an opening "Where the hell are we Calla-" the sound of movement suddenly came from the shadows behind her and she turned, torch flickering in the darkness "Who goes there?"
