Larkin Silvaris ♚ Larkin was rereading one of the books Felix had brought to her. Sitting near her cabin with her pale legs crossed and her long ivory hair pulled into a loose braid that fell down her back. Her dress was starting to show its age but as for now still held together well enough. She had food and a roof to hide under when it rained. Even some books to entertain herself. Tea although not heated. Life at the little cabin wasn't bad, just lonely. She did get bored though. The books hadn't lasted very long and the majority had been read at least twice now.
It was a nice day. Warm and the sun was bright. Perfect for some reading. Larkin however was not a very graceful person and when the sound of a branch snapping in the underbrush nearby startled her she turned. The heavy book slipping from her fingers and into a small puddle of water left by the recent rain.
"Oh no, no no no." She panicked and hurriedly picked it up. Her expression worried as she fanned out the damp pages. Maybe she could dry them before too much damage was done. Sitting down again she opened the book and began to flip through the damn pages. Gently pulling them apart and letting air get to all of them, eventually just using her magic to turn the pages as she stared worriedly at the possibly ruined book.
"I'm so sorry." She all but whispered to it.

Farid had stuck close to the keep while his wound knit together and he experimented with his new found freedom. For a while he had expected that he would be watched, kept under strict orders and expected to do as he was told. Instead, he found himself with some broad guidelines and a generally long leash. Much longer than he had ever experience. Finally he slipped from the keep, stopping to let the head cook know and get something to eat (there always seemed to be something to eat, which was a novelty he had yet to get over).
He hadn't meant to be gone long, honestly. He had shifted early on and then just... stayed that way. Lurking through underbrush, avoiding people, and generally trying to figure out what to do with himself. He had scavenged a little to eat on the way and mostly just... kept moving. The wound on his side had healed quickly as a werebeast is likely too, though the skin was still tender and the fur had not grown back in his hyena form year. But at least it was closed, nothing more than a new scar.
Catching the sound of a panicked voice, the hyena froze. Dropping low to the forest floor, he bellied foreward beneath some underbrush and spotted a young woman with a book on her lap, fanning the pages desperately. Wide ears flicked back against his skull, then forward, torn between anxiety and curiousity. He lay in wait, listened. Smelling. Though there were some old scents of others around, he heard no one but her and she had the only truly fresh scent here.
Still keeping low he slunk out of the brush and a few steps closer to her, then froze, ready to leap back into the cover of brush if she spotted him and turned violent. Cautiously he reached out to her with the voice he so seldom used with anyone. What's wrong?

Larkin Silvaris ♚ Larkin was focused on saving her book, so focused that she didn't notice the other werebeast creeping closer. It was only when his voice broke the silence that had before only been punctuated by the soft swish of turning pages. The words that crept into her mind caused Larkin to freeze monetarily. Her bright eyes moving upward and around in her attempt to find the origination. And there he was. She wasn't familiar with what species he might but since he had spoken it was obvious he was a werebeast. Or at least a hybrid like herself.
"Oh! I-my book." Her words tumbled over one another in her surprise. Having stopped when he had spoken to her Larkin began hurriedly turning the pages again. Focusing on them with her mind and sending them turning back and forth so that air could kiss the inked pages. She watched the stranger however. The last few weeks had made her a little wary. There were bad men after her that would stop by on occasion, looking for her. But he didn't act like someone searching...he had given up the element of surprise rather willingly.
"I dropped it in that puddle over there, now its soaked....I hope I didn't ruin it." She frowned after the explanation but still turning the pages she smiled at the strange beast. She had never seen anything quite like him. He looked somewhat like a canine, but not. "I'm Larkin." She said as way of introduction. Her head tilting to the side slightly as the burning question escaped her lips. "Are you a wolf of some sort?"

His large ears flattened a little to the sides as the froze, a low whine escaping his throat almost in apology for startling her. He hadn't meant to do that, honestly. He sidled a step closer to the brush that had previously been his shelter but her speech did not sound angry or hurt. Just surprised. His muzzle turned towards the puddle she indicated and he cautiously crept a step or two towards it, looking into the water curiously. Then he peered up at her again when she introduced herself. It was so strange to talk to someone like this. Like it was normal. It was also... nice.
I'm Farid, he offered, for lack of a better name. He had been Farid all his life and for all the changed his life was going through it didn't seem fitting to change that. In some ways he clung to it as a reminder of who he was and where he had come from. When she asked him what he was, his ears perked a little and he shook his head. It was almost comical on the quadruped, the thick mane of fur on his neck and shoulders flopping a little with the movement. The hair there rose and fell occasionally as his emotions peaked and ebbed, like a mohawk that ran from between his ears all the way down to merge with his short tail.
Striped hyena. Not a wolf at all, I think. I used to hear them talk about my mother, that she was unique. Not a wolf or dog or cat or even a very large weasel. Just a hyena. He hadn't quite understood those whole conversations, but he had gotten the gist. What are you doing out here?
Simple curiosity colored his voice. His head lifted a little as he tried to get a look at her book without actually going any closer, and without being too obvious.

Larkin Silvaris ♚ "Farid." She repeated with a smile and a nod of thanks for sharing his name with her. She was still turning the pages with her ability, the soft rasp of the pages a background noise to their conversation. He answered her question about what he was and Larkin was surprised. Her blue eyes moving over him as he spoke before back to his furred face. She had never heard of a hyena, he must be from a far off land. Or maybe they were just rare. She knew so little outside Aelfmenn, even about her own kind. "I don't think I have ever heard of a hyena before." She replied honestly but not in a condescending way. More as if she were impressed. Her curious mind soaking in any information he gave her. "So you are a-sorry!" She stopped herself then. It was rude to pepper a stranger with questions like this. She should really learn some people skills...one would think that being as old as she was she would know a bit more than she did.
Catching his curious eye on her book she kept flipping the pages but smiled. "You are welcome to borrow it...if I didn't ruin it." At his question of why she was there Larkin hesitated. But Farid didn't act like those bad men. Not at all. "I have to stay here a while, to be safe." She turned and pointed toward her cabin that could just be seen through the trees. "I'm living there for now." His ears were so...tempting, and adorably round. Like something she has seen on a teddy bear for a child before. Was a hyena a small type of bear maybe? It was hard to discern what he might be as he looked like such a mix of species. But not in a bad way. He was intriguing. Interesting.
"Why are you out here? Or do you live closeby too?" The idea of a neighbor was exciting. It did get lonely out here in the woods and Felix couldn't stay with her constantly.

Not many have. He admits, but there is an edge of cautious humor in his voice. She does not seem scary, this pale elven girl. Nor does she smell threatening. There's something small and fragile about her that makes him think maybe... maybe he can creep a step closer. His eyes flick to the book, watching the pages turn without any real effort on her part and he stops, fascinated and cautious. She had magic of some sort. How little of it he'd seen! He lifts a dainty paw as though to step closer and then hesitates. He set's it back down uncertainly, ears flicking around to listen to the surroundings. He hears no other people, nothing that sounds like a predator.
I can't read. His response to her offer is plain and holds no shame or embarrasment. It is just a fact. He steels his courage and creeps closer, finally close enough that if he cranes his head a little he can try and see it anyway. He has seen them in Carjen's keep, but never touched one. They, like everything else, seem expensive. Worth more than his life he is sure. And so he doesn't try and touch the book, only tries to look and see what's on the pages. He has had to come within arm's reach of her to see, but he doesn't think she is dangerous. At least, he thinks he will have a warning before she hurts him, enough to get away without suffering badly.
I was just... getting out. Away from people and walls. I think I'm pretty far away from where I'm staying. He wasn't really sure he could call it home. It wasn't his. Nothing was his. He tilts his head a little to the side and turns his eyes from the book to her face. His oversized ears lean, pulled by gravity so for a moment he looks a little dog like.

Larkin nodded and smiled. Hyenas must be uncommon then, how lucky she was to see someone who could shift into one. He moved closer and said he could not read although he still eyed her book curiously. It must be very sad to not be able to read. To let oneself get lost in a good book and 'wake up' hours later with no recollection of the time lost. "I could teach you? Or at least I can try, I've never really taught anyone before." Of course it would take more than one visit and Larkin could only hope that she didn't get moved or sent home before she could help him. If he did indeed want her help. She angled the book again to make it easier for him to see although she kept turning the pages, hoping to dry them before the dampness reached the spine and really took hold.
"Its nice to just...get away from it all sometimes. But before these last few weeks the forest always terrified me. I'm still nervous but it doesn't seem as ominous as it always had when I lived in Aelfmenn." Wait, he was a werebeast who lived a ways off. Carjen said his home wasn't horribly far from here and that he took in werebeasts. Was he perhaps one of Carjen's people? It seemed improbable but she still felt the urge to ask. "Do you live with Carjen? He dropped by a few days ago when it was storming." Recalling the meeting she had to smile. His fur had been so soft, and he had left a nice dent in her door from his massive skull. He had been prickly and grumpy but she had enjoyed him companionship none the less. Just as she was now enjoying time with Farid.
He was within arms length now and Larkin had the strongest desire to touch those round ears of his but she restrained herself. He seemed so timid, nervous. Her touch would likely only make him more so. When he looked at her with his tilted skull and ears that strained forward she couldn't help but smile. He was adorable! Before she could stop herself she was reaching out to let the back of her fingers gently stroke the fur of his cheek. When she realized what she had done she pulled her hand back with a quick apology bursting from her lips, she hoped she hadn't scared him away. "I'm so sorry! Forgive me I think I'm too forward...you were just so cute." Larkin derived a comfort from touch, even something as simple as a pet or handhold. But at times her actions might seem presumptuous and be unwanted. "I'm sorry, Farid." She said again. Hoping he wasn't angry with her or worse, afraid.

Her offer of knowledge was too tempting. He inch by inch he crept closer, pausing when she spoke as though his confidence waned when her noticed of him was so direct. And yet, curiosity was again rising to drown a little of the fear that so often drove him. I would like that, if you wanted to. His mind voice is shy, restrained eagerness underlying the self-concious knowledge that he doesn't really know what to do in this situation and he has no way to pay her back. Whatever she asks, he thinks it might be worth it. To learn.
She speaks of Carjen and he perks up a little. If she knows Carjen, and they are friends, then perhaps she is more like the people that Carjen has collected at his stronghold. Good people. Farid had never known there were so many good people in the world until his chains had been broken. Lost in contemplation, he doesn't notice her hand moving in time to avoid it. Her fingers slide through the long, coarse fur on his cheek and he springs back and away in an awkward moment. The broad line of guards hairs long his back rise in surprise though his ears are slicked back to his skull and for a moment he cowers, tense for the chase. But she doesn't give chase. She apologizes. Has he ever been apologized to before. A little at a time he forces himself up though his steps are hesitant. He returns to her though his ears don't rise all the way up and thefear hasn't quite left him. It is a hard thing to extend even this much trust and is makes him sick to his stomach as he fights down the adrenaline that just flooded his body and pushes him to runrunrun.
It's okay, I just... I didn't see it. It is a weak excuse, though partially true. His brain doesn't really know how to process all of her words. Cute? Is he cute? What does that even mean when referring to a scrawny, scarred up slave? He stays quiet on the matter. He wants to learn to read. He can deal with the anxiety twisting his guy if it means she'll teach him.

"I would love too!" Larkin said cheerfully. She had made the mistake of touching him then. And she could tell immediately by his reaction that it had bothered him. She nervously chewed on her lip and felt the deep sinking feeling of guilt. She nodded after her spoke although her blue eyes didn't leave him. "I won't do it again." She assured him softly. Momentarily she had forgotten to turn the pages of the book but quickly started doing so again when she realized it.
"I-If you want I can read to you first and you can watch. Get a feel for the words. Then we can start working on letters and sounds." She smiled at him reassuringly but her eyebrows turned down worriedly as she watched the timid creature.

The worry in her face, despite her smile, made him wonder. It urged him to try, just to ease that worry a little. She shouldn't worry about someone like him. He slunk close to her, taking a little care to choose a seat near the stairs, back easily within her reach and so he could easily see the pages of the book.
It's okay, really. His voice was soft, entreating. He almost dared to offer, to let her do it of his own will just to see if he could. But he wasn't that brave yet, so he stayed silent on the matter. He nodded vigorously when she offered to read to him though, ears perked with curiosity. Yes, please. He'd never really seen a book. Sure, he'd seen words scratched into walls but the symbols meant nothing to his uneducated eyes. He couldn't discern their patterns or understand their meanings and yet he could feel the weight behind them, all this information denied him.
By the time the sun began to sink, he'd quite forgotten his fear in the excitement of learning. His shoulder brushed her often as he shifted to get a better look at something and much of his fear was almost gone. The dimming of the light however brought him back to the time and he realized he should go back. Someone might want him for something and notice him missing. He still wasn't sure what he expected when he got back, despite the assurance that he could come and go as he pleased.
I should go back, it's getting late. He stood and shook himself a little, watching her from the corner of his eye. Then abruptly he nudge forward and his tongue grazed her cheek in the gentlest of motions before he bounded away, his head full of the events of the day and his body alive with energy. He paused at the edge of the clearing, hesitant. Can I visit again?
((let me know if the time skip isn't okay, it just felt like things were dragging a bit.))

(Sha its fine! ^_^)
Larkin had enjoyed reading to him, she was however starting to tire. She yawned and stretched, nodding when he said he should leave. The lick on her cheek was unexpected and had tickled, she giggled and smiled at him as she watched him stride away. He seemed very nice. If fearful. "Of course! I hope you do!" She said with a wide smile and waved to him before she stood and gathered her book to go inside her small house. She paused though to turn back to the man who hopefully wasn't gone just yet. "Thanks for spending time with me Farid." She called and turned to make her way up the steps.
