Patrol. Train. Manage pack conflicts. Seek out new feeding and hunting locations. Contribute to growing crops. Help mend a shelter. Draft new building plans. Head dinner. Orient a newcomer. Screen a potential trespasser. The variety of tasks which Alvina dealt with day to day held both a comforting sense of monotony at times and a sense of risk and unpredictability that she very much appreciated. One such unpredictability? An unexpected expression of gratitude.
A long widowed Were, with hair that never quite seemed kept, living on the fringe of her territory was someone her Pack kept tabs on, though the unspoken understanding was one of mutual ignorance. They did not seek each other out, hunt together, or really associate in any sort of meaningful way. Perhaps the most meaningful way ever had been during a harsh winter a while back, when hunting grew slim, when they had left some food stores for him. That aside, if the Pack bumped into him on the border, no conflict ensued. If he chose to hunt on the fringe of land he occupied, again no conflict. What posed an interesting change was that the man actually sought to contact a nearby patrol in the form of leaving a small note, marking up the area intentionally it seemed with his scent to grab their attention. Contained on the page was a short expression gratitude for them not having attacked his child.
Now, Alvina had not known he even had offspring, let alone that his offspring had been mated to the Commander of the Immortal Army. That very man – unfortunately not untouchable now to her but still extremely disdained – had crossed into her territory looking god awful only days before. Which meant that the wolfing with a frosty gaze had been the very one she had contacted. Interesting indeed. Interesting enough to follow up on, if only to perhaps learn a little more about the Commander’s intentions. She couldn’t help but doubt that it would end well for the girl, with the palpable stench of death that clung to him and his murderous tendencies.
That was why, venturing for curiosity, she lead a small patrol with a jaguar and another wolf, skirting closer than usual to the man’s property.

Since Connor's departure Branwen had spent much time in her wolf form. Prowling the wildes near her father's cabin. Careful not to cross the distinct scent markings of the pack that rubbed elbows with her fathers turf. If it could even be called that. He had never made an official claim. Never started or joined a pack. He just sort of lived there on the outskirts of their society. A peace between them that neither side cared to break. Gaius was unsure how to handle her, he had always been a loving father. Kind but firm handed. But now it was like his daughter was someone else entirely, and she was terrified of that person. She wouldn't let him into her head. Wouldn't listen to his well meaning words. In the end he just let her go on her way and hoped that she would return to him in one piece the next morning.
It was nighttime of course when her prowling brought the strong scent of three warm bodies to her nose. Close...they were closer that she had smelled them in the week before. But why? Why would they venture so close on this night. Her dark tail lashed against her legs as she contemplated her options. But the wolf pushed her to investigate. To search out those of her kind that would skirt a well known border. Suspicious and intrigued at the same time.
She didn't cross, but she lingered dangerously close. Her pale eyes peering out into the darkness as she waited for the beasts that she could sense drawing nearer and nearer with each minute. When they were within range she projected a message to them. "Looking for someone?" Maybe the leader still thought Connor was at the cabin. Maybe she had done something to anger the woman. She didn't know but she wasn't in the best of moods on this night.

Through the trees and brush, over stones grown over by moss, they travelled making their way along the border. It was after only a short while that they too sensed another presence, despite the fact that the wind direction was not in their favor. Not long thereafter, a voice, an inquiry, was projected outward into each of their minds.
She had not necessarily anticipated running into the young wolf so soon, but Alvina was not opposed to taking advantage of the opportunity. A glance signaled as much to her companions, as they veered closer in silence unison to move toward the sound. They were just emerging into view when the Alpha addressed Branwen with a response. “You actually; you father sent me a thank you the other day.” Direct, perhaps brutally to the point even, she continued. Neither her tone nor her body language was aggressive, however, as she lowered her rear to sit. “Your mate; how long ago did you meet him?” As much as she disliked Connor, and wanted to know more details, it was important that she framed it in that way. She had more respect for the bond than disdain for Connor. With that, her blood-red eyes settled on her frosty ones.

Branwen stood her ground as the trio came into view. Her nose wrinkling from the scents they carried with them. Her clan must be quite large. The alpha's words were surprising. The information unknown to her although it sounded like something her father would do. He valued his peace with these people. The nearest he would get to having connections any longer, save for herself he kept to himself in is cabin. Hunting his land. Rarely did he venture beyond his borders. She didn't react to that first statement, now wanting to sound like a fool and give away the fact that her father hadn't told her of the letter.
It was question that followed however that made her lupine body stiffen. This woman had allowed them to go free before when she could have easily killed Connor and herself by association. But she hadn't. Respect. It was such a delicate thing. "Not long." She eventually admitted. Unsure why she was even bothering to answer. She could have turned tail and left or not spoken at all. But if answers were what Alvina truly wanted she could easily get them. Branwen was sorely outnumbered. Briefly her pale eyes flicked to her companions then back to the scarred face of the she wolf.
"I am well aware of who he is. He told me that he encountered you, and your mate during the war. You have my condolences." The pain she must have felt and still feel, Branwen couldn't fathom. The pain she felt now with Connor gone would be barely a blip on the radar compared to knowing he was dead and gone forever. Her furry ears twitched and her head turned upward to catch where the moon hung in the sky. Gauging how much time she still had before she would need to venture home and hide behind the thick walls of the cabin from the suns unforgiving rays. "Did you seek me out to ask questions about my mate, Alvina?" Her words were measured but not spoken unkindly. Though there was the distinct impression that she would be giving very little when it came to the topic of the immortal man.

Alvina’s tail flicked as she regarded the other she-wolf, before she offered a short answer. With a faint nod, something of a breath seemed to leave her. They were newly drawn together by the Goddess then, which might’ve explained why they had so haplessly travelled together. And why Connor had been stupid enough to state his claim to her pack members. Truthfully, those new members had suffered repercussions for their insistence in seeking to attack the pair. After all, Alvina’s most absolute law was centered around preserving that bond. But he had still been perilously stupid to so blindly state the words.
Her ears swiveled forward then backward as she seemed to digest Branwen’s statement, though she kept her face measured and cool. “Thank you. It’s been… A long time since that happened now. But thank you.” Her voice very briefly seemed like that of a much younger Werebeast, though it just as easily vanished as she continued. With a small head shake, she levelled her with another look. “Not exactly. But I was inclined to share some information with you after I came to understand what drew you both so far out into the middle of nowhere.” A small head tilt. “Which I don’t yet grasp entirely. He should’ve known it was risky to come out here.”
It became very clear right then that the dark wolf was maintaining a link exclusively with Branwen. Her companions had seemed to drift off yards away, going about their business without any visible mind to the pair as they discussed.

Branwen watched the other lupine. Her gaze leaving her briefly when her companions branched away. Automatically she kept an eye on them, not trusting either to come up behind her. "Information?" She parroted but swallowed when Alvina said Connor should have known better. "He was following me...I led him onto your territory unintentionally." Her eyes lowered for a moment as she remembered the horrible condition he was in. It was unlikely he was even truly able to comprehend where he might be. Let alone knowledge from years and years ago. Her ears pressed back against her furry skull as the next admission was directed to Alvina alone.
"I lost control back in the city and killed a couple humans, Connor saved me from the gallows and I slipped away while he slept. After trying to kill him as well... don't hold the trespassing against him. It was my mistake, I should have paid more attention to where I was."
She turned her head so that she could again find the other two figures. Still not entirely trusting them. What information could she have that was so important she would seek Branwen out? "Connor seemed to think highly of you Alvina...or at least he respected you which in some circles means more. My father does as well-" Her voice broke away while the she wolf wrestled with her stubborn pride. "I would ask a favor of you, although I'm not certain how I could repay you."
She didn't say what the request was yet, she wanted to see Alvina's reaction before she said more.

Alvina gave nothing away as Branwen ventured to explain, though inwardly gears were turning. It made the most sense that she, like many before her, would’ve sought to isolate herself after such an incident. The firsts of those were always particularly traumatic, and even more so for those who were… of a sensitive nature. Branwen seemed like that in temperament, at least thus far. Alvina herself? Well she had been at the time, but war also forced you to change. Killing, defending… It caused a dangerous blurring to the act. It simultaneously proved that life was precious and worth defending, even if it could be lost – or stolen – so easily. She, at least now, leaned more toward defending.
She nodded, her tone a little more empathetic. “I understand… It is quite fortunate that he was inclined to helping you, given the circumstance of how the bond works.” Even if the motive was yet unclear. Connor was a little more self-serving than she would’ve liked; honorable at times, yes, but his loyalties had proven to be for himself. That aside… She was curious to know the circumstances of the younger wolf losing control. With her following up with mention of Connor respecting her, however, she put the thought to the backburner. Also seeing her eyes searching for her pack members…. The Alpha felt the need to clarify.
“They’re inspecting the border. You have my word neither will bother us.” Her head tilted, a look of concentration somehow expressed even through her lupine features. “Connor respects me because of our knowing each other prior to his role as Commander. That is it. What favor do you have to ask…?” She trailed off briefly, before Branwen’s earlier comment came to mind. “Would you like help in dealing with your wolf?”

Branwen felt like she was on the losing side of things. Alvina had all the information in her paws and kept tossing questions at her without answering Branwens inquiry about what information she might have. Branwen didn't speak but slowly sat down. Her fluffy tail curling around to lay across her dark paws. "You said you had information I should have Alvina...did you choose not to give it to me?"
Purposefully disregarding the alpha's questions could be a dangerous game but Branwen wasn't in the best of moods as it was. Her mind was a muddled mess. Her wolf out of control at times. Her mate back at the castle. Her job certainly gone. How would she make ends meet? Clothe and feed herself? Like her father? It hardly seemed a fulfilling life. And it wasn't as if her mate were dead. Just....out of her reach.
She wanted to be angry. She wanted someone to strike out at and release all her frustration but Alvina wasn't giving her that opportunity. She was being all understanding. Explaining her clan members movements. Asking if she needed help with her wolf. Why? Why was she so damn nice?
"....I don't really have all night to sit here. I'm not trying to be rude Alvina but I don't see the point in a meet and greet and I cant be stuck out here come morning."
She turned so that her eyes could catch the prowling cats then turned her own pale orbs back to the she wolf. "So either give me a reason to keep talking or let me leave."
Not that she was stopping her. Not yet. Branwen was purposefully pushing buttons. Hoping for the worst.

The Alpha regarded her with a calm sense of serenity, her ears merely swiveling forward in interest as Branwen seemed to grow shorter and shorter in speaking to her. Again, something she could empathize with, even if on some level she might’ve otherwise considered her actions disrespectful.
“You presume that I chose not to, though I merely haven’t offered it yet.” Her words held a type of punctuated tone that clearly did not dismiss Branwen’s disregard for offering answers. Despite that, however, the Alpha seemed to sense she might’ve gotten farther with honey, understanding, rather than vinegar, in that moment. Especially if for some unknown reason, the pup seemed to have some concern for being out too late. “Regardless, I do think an offer for aid, if that was what you were planning to ask for, was worthwhile discussing. And I know of a dark place to discuss further, if the morning becomes an issue on that front.”
Her eyes briefly dropped from her own, momentarily seeming to consider before she regarded the other she-wolf again. “About what I wanted to share. You cannot be unaware of Connor’s death power by now. And I know and respect the bond you have toward him – but be conscious in being around him. He has done unspeakable things to many for very selfish reasons. One of my old friends included. That man is not one which I have ever seen nor heard to serve others.” She seemed implore, albeit in a motherly way, with her next words. They were softer, not judgmental, but encouraging. “Just… Do not let him take advantage because of what the Goddess chose in tying you to him. Perhaps She chose it for a reason, but we have yet to see. The Bond works in mysterious ways.”

Branwen remained silent until Alvina had finished speaking. Her pale eyes boring into the other female as her silence stretched on even then. She swallowed down the immediate anger and desire to defend her mate and tried to find the more reasonable side of herself. She didn't know Connor well. But she did know what he had done for her. And that in her mind was more important than his past transgressions. "He might be my mate Alvina...but he is not mine to have. I am aware that his past has darkness in it, but admittedly not many details." She paused before continuing. Her pale eyes falling to the she wolfs feet as the connection picked up again. "But I do know what he has done for me. That he saved my life. That he came to find me and nearly died because of a wound I inflicted yet doesn't hold it against me. I know that I trust him. And as childish as it might seem to someone like you. I don't care that he isn't perfect. That he might have killed all these people. Because he doesn't shame me for what I am."
Suddenly her pale eyes flicked up to the alpha and Branwen climbed to her paws. A slight shake of her body given to get rid of any dirt that might have clung to her. "I lose control of my wolf Alvina. That is why I was to be hung in the gallows like some monster for all the humans to gawk at. If you can help me learn to control that side of myself that I would be grateful. But I don't want to hear any more about my mate and the things he has done. Can you truly say your paws are clean? Because I cant."
A slight shiver went over her form and her head dipped a bit lower. Shame clear in her voice when Branwen spoke again. "I don't trust myself any longer. I cant stop...if the wolf wants something I cant resist the urge. I don't want to live like some unbridled beast forced into the woods. And Gaius....I know as glad as he is to see my that it also hurts him. I look too much for my mother and it isn't fair to keep making him relive that pain. But I don't trust myself in the city now."
Her words came pouring out once they started. Revealing much more than she had initially planned or cared to. But there it was. She had lain herself bare. Now to just wait and see if Alvina would pick her bones clean.

Silence greeted Branwen’s dialogue for a long, pensive moment. Darkness? If only the poor girl knew. Alvina hardly thought that she herself knew the full span of what exactly the man had done. His lifetime was inconceivably longer than her own. If he had committed atrocities in only the last two hundred years, she could hardly conceive an image of what crimes ten fold of that time could have allowed. “Perhaps he is one who has done shame, and that is why he doesn’t pass judgement on to others.” Was all she offered in a quiet tone of finality. She wouldn’t press, knowing how the bond might compel her to feel anger over such comments about her mate…. Which was a nice, preemptive thought given what next followed.
With the abrupt, frantic look that flashed in her eyes, and the slight shaking that grasped her muscles, Alvina’s ears pricked forward in interest toward the other Werebeast. Losing control? Well that was hardly something which was new among their kind. Such events were half the reason she took refugees as she did. And yet, the sentence that followed… Alvina nearly tsk’ed, but instead exhaled a soft breath. She understood, as she had moments before. The same compulsion had driven herself so many years before, and because of that, she understood. That, and the obligation she felt in her position, the need to be responsible when she had the ability to assist… “I can help you, and I will not speak more of your mate. I never claimed that my own paws were clean, girl.”
The shame that came thickly in Branwen’s voice caused her to take a step closer, as she seemed to hum in a sort of soothing mental presence. “Breathe, girl. Breathe. I will help you. It may take some time, but I promise that you can and will control your wolf. You needn’t worry of your father in seeking to grasp that.” A soft exhalation caused her shoulders to compress slightly. “I can make some space if you’d be receptive to staying at Blood Rose while I work with you.”

Branwen watched the alpha in silence for several moments. Her dark fur twitching as a moth landed and dashed across her back. "Alright." She didn't know where that answer had come from. Why she was agreeing to stay within a pack when it was something she had no experience with. But...maybe this would be good for her. And good for those around her. Especially her father. "I would appreciate that." She said softly.
(Suuuuuuuper short, but I figured we could probably end this one here.)
