Appearance:
Omesh is sturdy for his age, barrel chested and stocky. Though he previously stood at a full 4'8" in his prime, old age has shrank him to a modest 4'6". In front of dignitaries and friends, he'll joke that all old rocks eventually become diamonds. He adorns himself in the ceremonial wear of the Emperor with fine reddish silk robes, brandishing gleaming pauldrons on his shoulders that are lined with a complex set of different gems. Each gem represents a different dwarven hero and if you get him started, Omesh will recite all the grand tales of the great dwarves before us.[break]

He also wears the sash of the Grand Artificer, a title bestowed to the Emperor as a reminder of dwarven ambitions in technology. The sash is constructed out of obsidian shards beset in a light metal, each engraved with a philosophical truth or a mathematical formula. It is kept as a record of his people's great achievements and its weight around his neck is a constant reminder of his duty to his people.[break]
His stony demeanor is often apt to crack as he is a joyous soul who brims with passion and enthusiasm. There is always a smile on his face and in his eyes, which used to burn with a fiery determination, now harbor a glow of warmth. His long and well-maintained beard hangs just above his belt, decorated with the traditional jewelry of the Emperor. The jewelry is a collection of gems and trinkets passed down from each Emperor to the next. [break]
Despite his age, he keeps up a regular physical routine to keep himself in shape, an old habit from his "adventuring career" as he calls it. Due to this aforementioned career, he has a rough and scarred body. A prominent scar down his forehead and through the eyebrow is what remains of the gash he received from a weretiger in its death flails. He has a large scar in his torso from where a human knight skewered him on the battlefield centuries ago. He still feels the weight of battle today in the form of stiffness and aches in his old age.[break]

Personality:
Omesh is an old hero and it shows in his everyday behavior. His primary concern is of the struggle of the common dwarf and the furthering of their success in all arenas. He is genuine in his emotions, betraying the stereotype of the cold dwarven demeanor. He is the first to laugh at a clever joke and the last to leave a soldier's widow's side at a funeral. He finds tradition and honor to be the utmost ideals in dwarven society as these traditions have lead to an innovative and enterprising society. He feels that there is a structure to not just life, but all of the world for an unknowable, yet righteous cause. The reason the world works the way it does is because it does. Progress is important, but losing sight of what makes a dwarf a dwarf will only lead to their downfall. A dwarf controlled by greed does not serve his fellows, but only causing society to suffer.[break]

He is steadfast in his decisions, priding himself on his instincts and logic. He'll listen to his advisors prattle on about this and that, but if he's made up his mind, there's no budging. The only and greatest exception to this rule is his oldest daughter, Aidana. Custodians of the palace will tell stories of hours-long arguments and cold standoffs between the two before Omesh inevitably caves in and compromises with her. He still expects the best of his daughter in any given situation as he sees her as an impeccable and strong woman, well deserving of the royal status she holds. He cares deeply for his immediate family and its extended clan.[break]

History:
Omesh was born as Calfray Barashiel, second born to Emperor Tordek, Fifth of His Name. As he was second born, he did not receive the preferential treatment that his older brother, Alren, received. He trained in the dwarven military, serving with the expeditionary legions in his early career. The life of a cavern rat (as they affectionately refer to themselves) taught him how to work closely with his comrades and how to be resourceful in terrifying and deadly situations far from the comforts of home.[break]
One notable event during his expeditionary days was the discovery of his enchanted blade, Dreadbane. While charting a deep cavern system in the northern reaches of Krizala with a small detachment of geologists and soldiers, they uncovered an ancient burial tomb of a long forgotten kingdom. Insidious magic permeated the structure as they explored and examined the hewn stone walls and carefully constructed coffins. They were ambushed by a fearful creature composed of shadow and rotted flesh. The terror it inflicted was as dangerous as its gaping maw; some of the explorers fell down dead immediately, their hearts bursting in their chests. Some fell to their knees, pleading with the creature for their lives before it slaughtered them. None stood before it and all either fled or died. Omesh ran for his life and in a panicked blur, fled deeper and deeper into the ancient halls of the dead. He found himself alone in a still and silent tomb and after regaining his senses, he noticed he had dropped his pack and thus his weaponry. [break]
There's an old story that says that the volcano that the Airen Kingdom sits under first started when the first emperor of the dwarves made a pact with the spirit of the mountains called Naihan. The dwarves would protect and care for the mountains and the mountains would provide a safe haven for the burgeoning race. This pact was made real when the dwarven emperor cut his hand and let his blood flow onto the peak of the tallest mountain. This blood ran down into the stone and the spirit named Naihan blessed it with the heart of flame, creating the volcano that stands to this day. They say that the blood of the emperors is not unlike the lava and many dwarven myths center around this theme.[break]
Just like the old myths, Omesh felt the warmth that is said to happen when the spirit of the mountain tries to guide a dwarven royal. He wandered in the supernal darkness with his hand outstretched, feeling out the warmth that was formless and invisible. After some time, his hand found a warm hilt of a sword which he pulled from an opened tomb. He didn't discover its true power until the creature from before had tracked him deep in the tombs. Where he once felt fear and an unrelenting need to escape, he found instead a supernatural bravery. He stood against the creature and slayed it now that he was immune to its supernatural terror. As was tradition, he gave the sword a name befitting of this victory: Dreadbane.[break]
After his tour in the expeditionary forces, he returned to the Kingdom of Airen to serve as an expeditionary general for his father, the Emperor. It was here that he learned the sciences, leading a academic life befitting a royal. He particularly favored the construction of siege weapons and emerged as a prominent engineer. For instance, he created a type of battering ram that utilized a pressurized engine. Whereas other rams were made for destroying gates, this was designed to punch a whole through stone walls with just a few blows. He also designed a type of mortar that was designed to be launched from a catapult or trebuchet. The mortar ignites in mid air and bursts into a liquid flame upon impact. It was utilized in the wars against the forest dwelling races as it was a perfect solution to force enemies out of the canopies of trees.[break]
The trajectory of his life was altered permanently when his older brother and the heir apparent was killed in action during a campaign against an undead incursion. He was suddenly elevated to the status of prince, ending his career as an expeditionary engineer, a job he was dedicated to with a fiery passion. He shadowed his father and his other royal advisors, learning that politics is a science in of itself with strategy and tactic.

He was suddenly elevated to the status of prince, ending his career as an expeditionary engineer, a job he was dedicated to with a fiery passion. He shadowed his father and his other royal advisors, learning that politics is a science in of itself with strategy and tactic.
More than a century later, his father passed away and Omesh bore the crown. During the wars, Omesh lead the Airen Kingdom in neutrality, instead finding a profitable middle ground between all the races. The dwarves forged the finest armors, weapons, and siege weaponry and they were sold to both sides of any conflict. The dwarves flourished during the wars and they fondly remember them as a golden age for the dwarves. The few times the dwarves were pulled into a conflict forced the Emperor to focus on the infrastructure of the city. What the city became was a bastion of defense, impenetrable to any attacks. Dwarven legions forced enemies to battle them in the caverns that connect the outside world to the city. Ambush and guerilla tactics, bolstered by the finest heavy armor infantry, made the ways into the city extremely dangerous.
Leading up to the Force of the Ashes, there was an extreme division in dwarven society. If the wars had ended, the glorious and rich environment they lived in would come to an end. With no wars, no one needs to buy armor or weapons. This was a pragmatic, if not practical, view of the situation. However, Emperor Omesh decreed that the dwarves would join the agreement and would work towards a world peace with the human king. There are many dwarves who still, in low whispers, see the Emperor as weak for this decision.
He has now been working with his advisors and the merchant houses of Airen to restart the dwarven economy in a time of peace.[break]
