Larkin nodded in response to his words. Accepting that he knew what he was talking about. Hopefully, she did get the hang of it...otherwise, it would make a long trip feel even longer. She nodded again when he explained that he should be alright if they avoided Mir. Cendra which was in Mir had also been unkind to her. It felt like every time she entered the city something bad happened. Larkin reached up to tuck one of her long pale locks behind her softly pointed ear and looked out at the expanse of snow ahead of them. "Just tell me if you want to switch spots, ok? I don't care to walk."
She chewed on her lip before speaking again. "If you needed a place to lay low I'm sure my brother would let you stay with us for a while. Aelfmenn doesn't really communicate with Mir much..." She couldn't help but grin a little. "That is if you can stand being around elves...you seemed awfully concerned when you saw my ears." Suddenly remembering their earlier conversation she spoke again although this time her voice was a little softer, more hesitant. "Also...no one there except brother knows I'm...what I am. So..." It was her roundabout way of asking him to not say anything. If Ives heard would he even allow her to take her apprenticeship back? She was uncertain.
"Before I was taken away from my home I always heard about the big bad criminals out there.." She cast a meaningful look over at Yngvald. "But its hard to see anyone as bad who would go out of their way to help a stranger. Felix was-" Immediately her soft voice broke away and a sad look came across her face. She cleared her throat softly in hopes of dislodging the emotions that lodged there and made it hard to swallow. "But anyway...did you decide to take up this life? Or did you just sort of...fall into it?"

Wherever the wind blows Well that's where I'm headed. He smiled, but nodded. "I'll let you know." With that, he took up the lead rope and gently pulled Bran forward. The first step was always a bit of a lurch, but Larkin was surely holding the saddle. She'd be fine. He glanced up at her.
Her offer was tempting, but he wasn't so sure she was correct. Sure, her brother cared for her, of that there was no doubt. Well, little doubt. But Yngvald, a stranger? Not just a stranger, but a human sellsword? He was dubious to say the least. Luckily she poked a bit of fun at him and he could reply to that instead of her offer. "Well, are the other elves like you? I think I can stand them if they are." But her next statement made him really wonder about her parentage. He didn't feel much like prying. "I won't mention it to anyone. I've kept many a secret in my life."
It was nice, in a way, to have another sentient being to talk with. He was used to speaking aloud to Bran, but of course he never received an answer. But Larkin had questions and statements and thoughts. He found himself eagerly listening. She started talking again and Yngvald waited for the inevitable compliment that she'd already given him - as if that would make him believe it - but was surprised. Felix. That was the name she'd cried out when she woke. The mere mortal may not have been smart, but he certainly wasn't dumb. He caught the sad expression on her delicate face. She didn't give him a chance to ask who Felix was.
"Me? Oh, I was either abandoned as a babe or my parents were killed. I was raised by some unsavory characters. Charming devils like myself. Well, to answer your question, I guess I fell into it. If I had a choice, I'd be..." he cleared his throat, "Well, there are safer ways to make a living." ... template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

When the horse moved her grip tightened, both with her fingers and her thighs. She managed to remain atop him with relative ease, but the horse was moving rather slowly. His gait rather smooth and rhythmic. Something she could fall into with a bit of time to learn it. "Like me?" She asked him, looking down at him from where she sat in the saddle with a confused look on her face. "I don't know...I've been told I'm a little different, but elves, for the most part, are kind and welcoming. Aelfmenn has more than just elves living in it." He said he wouldn't speak of her secret and Larkin gave him a small grateful smile. "Thank you."
"I'm sorry." She said after he spoke of the death or disappearance of his parents. She was lucky to have her brother after her parents had passed away. She couldn't imagine going it completely alone. Well...she sort of was now. But she had been raised in a home with a family. Her youth had been simple, easy. It sounded to her that Yngvald had always struggled and fought for what he had. He stopped his sentence rather abruptly which made the little hybrid's skull lean curiously. "If you had the choice you would be, what?" She was genuinely curious although he did seem hesitant to voice it.
"It does seem like an...eventful lifestyle." She agreed softly. She hesitantly released the horse with one hand and nudged her sleeve upward so that the obsidian tattoo on her wrist could be seen. Its meaning was rather well known across Oedir although there were slight variations here and there. Different owners and the like branding their property in different ways. "I was given this on my first night in Cendra, I didn't think I stood a chance. I couldn't...I wasn't strong enough to live through what those people do. Thankfully I didn't have to. But I still have this as a reminder." She let her sleeve fall back down and held the saddle horn with both hands again. "If you did want out, of what you do. I would try to help if you would let me. Everyone needs help sometimes."
She looked at the snowy expanse ahead of them and sighed softly. "It should just be spring all the time. Its a much more agreeable season."

Wherever the wind blows Well that's where I'm headed. He didn't know there were other creatures besides elves living there, unless she meant the Fae folk. Perhaps he was simple-minded, or perhaps he just liked things to be simple, easy to explain and understand. Elves lived in Aelfmann, merfolk lived in Dorsina, and disreputable men like Yngvald lived on the run. "We'll see, then." he finally answered. It would be nice to stop for at least a few days after the long journey out of the snow.
Yngvald would never understand why people apologized when they found out he hadn't known his parents. Whoever was apologizing surely hadn't taken him from them. It's not as if it was their fault. And yet they apologized. When Larkin did, he simply shrugged. "Plenty of babes without parents." he said dismissively. She asked him to finish his sentence. He sighed and didn't reply for some time. He may or may not have been blushing when he answered. "I've always had a fondness for animals like Bran. I've thought about buying a farm or a stable." He shook his head, "I'm not likely going to. I may have the coin one day, but a bad reputation will follow me forever." He shook his head again, "No, traveling is fine for me."
A glance at the tattoo and he recognized it. He'd seen it many times before and counted himself lucky to be missing one. "Don't worry about me. I'm used to this lifestyle. But, how did you get away?"
With her, he looked out across the white nothingness. "I'm partial to autumn myself. It's nice to ride in the forest when all the leaves have changed color. It's not too hot or too cold." Some snow had gotten in his boot as he walked along. ... template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

He didn't accept her offer but he didn't straight up decline it either. His noncommital answer was enough to sate her. For the moment at least. "That's true. But it doesn't change anything." Larkin's thin shoulders rose in a small shrug. "It's like saying lots of people get eaten by bears. It doesn't make what almost happened any less scary just because I'm not the only one it happened too." Larkin often didn't realize when she was prying. Those little social cues just not sinking in like they should. She didn't think that for one moment she might come across as rude.
From her seat on Bran she could have sworn his cheeks turned pink, but maybe it was just the wind chill. "That sounds like a good dream." She commented with a smile although the words that followed made her frown. It was a shame that someone would judge him because of a bad moment. He was apparently very good also. He had saved her life and now he was escorting her home. A perfect stranger, a hybrid no less. Yngvald asked how she was freed from her chains in Cendra and Larkin hesitated before she answered. "Felix saved me." She supplied simply. Not wanting to delve into the memories.
He had retorted with fall and Larkin grinned, shaking her head a little. "But everything is so...loud in fall. Even the trees. And then the cold comes. Nope. I'm set on spring." She spoke as if she actually had some say in the matter. As if she could really change the seasons and her decision carried weight.

Wherever the wind blows Well that's where I'm headed. He shrugged. He'd never known his parents, and therefore had never missed them. And why should he? He was glad to talk about something else, even these ridiculous fantasies that sometimes hurt to think about. He offered Larkin an appreciative smile when she replied to it. At least she was nice.
At the mention of Felix, he frowned. "Oh." he said gently.
Luckily, she playfully disagreed with his seasonal preference. He smiled, almost laughing. "Well, I'll just change the weather for you while I'm at it." he said. His tone this time was also playful, teasing, and he smiled at her to make sure she knew he wasn't trying to be mean. The wind was starting to let up a bit and the snow fell more gently. No doubt a relief for all of them as they went on their way. Sure, we can skip ahead. What did you have in mind for that? I can ask in the chatbox <3 template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

Her first thought had been that he was serious, that he could change the seasons. But thankfully common sense caught up to her before she said something that would make her look like a complete fool. "I wish you could though." She replied with a smile. It was almost too perfect that the wind wouldn't tear at their clothing as savagely and that the snow would calm. Maybe it was the power of wishful thinking. She stared down at the kind stranger as the small horse moved along. Her blue eyes eventually turning back to the path.
A few days later...
Traveling wasn't the most enjoyable thing for the little rabbit, at least not these days. But they made pretty good time despite the frequent breaks. Another morning was dawning, they weren't far from Aelfmenn now. They should arrive today, or so she assumed. Larkin stretched and sat up in the tiny shelter. She pulled her knees to her chest and sat her chin on them with a little frown. Her stomach did not feel well today. And the thought of riding...the gentle sway, it nearly made her ill just to think about it.
Larkin rubbed her face with a tiny discontented sound in her throat. It was still cold here, the ground covered in snow. But it was like summer compared to Krizala. Larkin looked to Ygvald, forcing a smile to try to hide her discomfort. "Maybe you should ride today." She said softly. He deserved a break anyway. He had been letting a complete stranger ride his horse while he walked. Larkin chewed on her lip and pushed her long hair behind her ears. Not moving from her sitting position yet, knowing that if she did she would get sick. And that was something she really didn't want Yngvald to see.

Wherever the wind blows Well that's where I'm headed. He'd been asleep when she woke, but when she stretched, he woke, too. Over the past few days, he'd gotten used to her touchy nature, perhaps even began to enjoy it. Just for the simple fact that it was gentler than anything else he'd known, and she didn't mean anything by it. He was still straightening up when she made a noise in her throat. She sounded like a child to him. When she said what she was thinking, he smiled. "Tired of ol' Bran, eh?" He stretched, and felt some joints pop. "Well, I s'pose you can walk for a while. I'll keep carrying the pack and he'll keep carrying the rest. You can join me in what's left of the snow." Without looking at her, he rose to his feet and approached the horse, getting ready to saddle him up. He glanced back at Larkin. He didn't expect her to jump up and skip over to him, but he didn't expect her to be so slow to rise either. There was a strange expression on her face, he realized.
"Alright, little one?" He finished adjusting the straps of the saddle and headed back toward her. Usually, arriving on time wasn't something that bothered him, but it was cold and he wanted a good place to rest. He thought Larkin did, too. So why was she taking so long to join him? She could walk today, he'd agreed to it. And even then, surely she was used to riding at a walk. What could possibly be the problem? ... template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

Larkin peered up at Yngvald as he readied Bran. Feeling her stomach twist and turn all the while. At his question she didn't immediately reply, her blue eyes closing as if to try to gather herself before she did speak. "I am ok, just...I get sick sometimes." She bit down on her lip and rubbed her face. Turning to the side so that she wasn't facing him if she did end up vomiting. She pushed her long ivory hair back from her face and pulled her knees to her chest. Trying to take long breaths but so far it wasn't helping.
"Do we have any water?" It probably wouldn't help but she would have tried just about anything at that point. She was sweating a little despite the cold, a testament to her twisting stomach. "And Bran was fine I just don't think I can handle the movement today..." Yngvald had turned out to be rather nice company. He didn't seem as wary of her now as he had been at first. Relaxing a little as the days went on.
"I don't know why the baby makes me sick...but I don't like it."

Wherever the wind blows Well that's where I'm headed. Oh, that's right, she was carrying a baby. Of course, Yngvald was no expert on these matters, but he seemed to recall that it made women feel sick. He was only glad he'd never have to endure it himself. He snatched up the waterskin and handed to her. "There you go." He looked back at Bran, who, despite being saddled, had started foraging through the snow for something to eat. Yngvald turned back to Larkin. "Take your time." he told her. There was no point in rushing if it was going to make her ill. And Bran should eat a bit more, anyway. "I think it's normal to be sick." Although he wasn't entirely sure. If he had any children of his own, he didn't know them. And he hadn't known many women that had children, either. Even if he did, pregnancy wasn't a topic he was interested in.
He pulled his coat closer and yawned. When they reached Aelfmann, he was going to rent a room and get some real sleep. ... template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

Larkin took the water when he offered it to her, pulling the top she would take a tentative sip and then a longer drink. Her blue eyes flicked between Yngvald and Bran. She gave him a grateful smile when he said she could take her time and that it was normal. "Thank you." She said and took another sip. "I think its normal, yeah...I've never been pregnant before this so I'm just kinda learning as I go." After about ten minutes or so when she didn't feel like she would get sick she climbed to her feet and handed the water skin back to Yngvald.
"Do you think you will have children one day? I mean...with someone. I don't think you can do it alone." She hurried to explain, feeling that her words left her sounding dumb but she only managed to dig the pit deeper. "I hadn't planned it but life has a way of surprising me.These days." Including with a human who was apparently an outlaw who would save her from a bear.
"Have you given it any more thought? Staying with my brother an I? Just for a few days so you can rest. I'm certain he wouldn't mind. You would be the one bringing me home after all." Her fingers searched for his as she walked beside him. Lightly capturing his own with a gentle squeeze. "Please? I owe the two of you that much at least..."

Wherever the wind blows Well that's where I'm headed. "Learning as you go," well that was life, wasn't it? He was quiet, listening. And then he shrugged. "Don't think I'd mind having a son one day." he said with a chuckle at her awkward phrasing. "Yes, a son would be fine." He bumped her playfully, and quite lightly, "But first I have to meet a woman that can put up with me, eh?" He smiled at his own joke.
"Life can be surprising. I gave up on planning years ago." Which was not true; his head was full of schemes to gain more coin. He didn't have much of a plan for where his life was heading, really. He only knew what he was good at, and that happened to be mercenary work and thieving. As much as he liked the idea of his little dream, he didn't count on it coming true.
Speaking of plans, he had thought about staying with her and her brother. He let her take hold of his hand and quietly appreciated the touch. By then he was used to her nature. "Are you sure? It would be nice to rest, but..." In truth, he wanted to stay, even if it was just to get a few days' rest and resupply. But he hadn't met her brother and Yngvald had a tendency of tracking mud inside the house.

She smiled softly at his mention of a son and the familiarity of the very gentle bump. She tapped her chin with one finger when a question hit her though. "What if it was a daughter? It isn't something we can really decide...I don't think." His joke went right over her head and Larkin looked over at him with surprise. "That shouldn't be hard." She commented thoughtfully. "You are very nice, and nice to look at. Any girl would be lucky to find herself with a man like you." And she meant those words. Perhaps from her they wouldn't mean as much as if they had come from someone else, but she valued Yngvald as a friend now. Whether or not he considered her one.
"Is it easier without plans?" She asked him as if he had all the answers, as if she were not so much older than he. Although Yngvald for his few years was likely wiser than the little hybrid would ever be. Her fingers had curled around his and he didn't pull away. Though he rarely had, seemingly growing accustomed to her odd little quirks rather quickly. "Of course. I would love for you to stay." She smiled wide and worked her fingers between his own to lean into his shoulder with a soft sight.
"I am sure he won't mind. Elves are welcoming to others in general...I'm not sure why everyone thinks we-they aren't. And you saved me from that bear....thats no small thing." Walking and speaking with him was helping to distract her mind from her nausea. Thankfully. "I'm sure Bran would like some rest too." She looked over at the small horse fondly. He was such a gentle beast.

Wherever the wind blows Well that's where I'm headed. He thought for a moment. "I don't think I've ever thought about having a daughter. I guess if one came along, I'd love her too." Truth be told, he'd be afraid to hurt her with his brutish stupidity. He wasn't surprised that Larkin missed the joke. She was innocent and a bit naïve. Nevertheless, he blushed. "You think I'm nice to look at?" He looked down at himself. His clothes were dirty with mud and even some dried blood from hunting. His face and hands were also smeared with dirt. His hair needed washing. All was covered in a fine sprinkling of snow. "Well, I disagree with you, but I appreciate it."
When she asked a question in her innocent way, he lightly squeezed her fingers. "Well, it's worked for me, sort of. I've gotten into trouble. Humans live such short little lives. I don't know if we have time to find the answers." He let her lean against him. They'd been traveling for days now and she'd been this way the whole journey. Yngvald prayed he'd never take it for granted. He never wanted to get used to it, he never wanted to tire of it, as he tired of many other things.
He joined her in glancing back at Bran. The little horse was happily plodding along. Yngvald could see the white pelt still on his back. He'd need to finish preserving it quick. The weather was warming up. "Yes, he deserves to have some rest." he agreed. ... template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0
