Magical Ability:
[break]Mage: Karawan is an unusual mage. She cannot practice magic. She can sense it all around her, see it like colors in the air. Though her gift for sensing primarily shows her the kind of magic that fills a person up and the relative strength of it, it can be terribly non-specific at times. For example, all werebeasts have the same sort of 'magic' to her sight so she cannot tell what kind they are. Immortals are hard to discern because the magic that extends their life tends to overshadow whatever magic they practice. Mages are the clearest to her, their gifts shining like lanterns in her sight. Through practice she may get better at identifying gifts but at current she can only guess a person's elemental leaning.

Karawan has a further curse, an ill-kept secret that most people at the mage's school already know. She devours magic. From a young age she has been drilled in the control of this part of herself so that not draining the magic around her is as simple as refusing to eat when surrounded by a feast. However, she does require magic to sustain herself. Too long without and she will grow lethargic and thin, as though malnourished. Were she to glut on too much magic it could destroy her from within. Her capacity to take in magic has never yet been tested. Taking magic from someone is not subtle- she must be near them and it is a near physical sensation, as though someone is drawing away part of their soul. Every person feels it differently depending on how they feel their magic, but it is always obvious.

Appearance:
Thin and waifish, Karawen has a delicate appearance. She is all sharp angles and bones beneath taut pale skin. Her hair is an unremarkable dirty blonde, straight and un-textured. Her eyes seem a touch too large for her face and add an air of innocence that has long been lost to her. Typically her expression is cynical, her choice of clothing ranging from austere to outrageous. A black ring marks the nape of her neck, the mage's mark that indicates she carries the gift. Her eyes are a flinty grey-blue, hunter's eyes in a body that looks like prey.

Personality:
Karawen is cynical and intelligent. She decided years ago that if others would shun her then she did not need them so she tends to hold herself aloof. This aloofness often comes off as arrogance. She is well versed in magical theory even if she cannot practice it herself. She is incredibly competitive but there is an edge of desperation to it, as if she is worried that she has to prove she is worth a place or she will be cast out. Or worse. She knows people are afraid of her. Sometimes she even likes it and the power it gives her. Other times she falls into black depressions characterized by seething, cold anger, wondering why she was burdened with this 'gift' and what place she could possibly have in the world. She doesn't believe the gods truly interact with the world anymore and has no mind to pay them the respect some people think they deserve.

History:
Karawan's mother was a teach at Lledrith School. A mage who worked her power through song she was a bright ray of optimism among cynics. Relatively young and pretty, she drew the attention of many though she seemed not to notice. Her primary joy came in the creation of beauty be it in music, art, or word. Her name was Elwin, and there were rumors that the blood of Faeries ran in her veins. It was midsummer when she caught the eye of a young man, a student near his mastery. Or perhaps it is better to say that midsummer was the season when Elwin's took notice of his long and earnest attention.

They spent a breathless season in love and when he attained his mastery they quietly continued their partnership. She stayed at the school, he traveled. Whenever he returned it was like a breathless honeymoon all over again. Then one day he returned from his travels to find Elwin heavy with his child. It was with delight they looked forward to beginning a family though neither one ever pressed the issue of making their commitment public. They did not marry. The father continued to travel though his trips were shorter and he was more often at home to look after Elwin as the birth drew closer.

The pregnancy was hard. Most attributed it to Elwin's petite frame and relative youth though she was typically flush with health. She grew weak and her music lost the spark that had transported those who listened to it. Close to the end she even found it hard to speak in more than a whisper, much less sing. She died bringing Karawan into the world. It became clear very quickly in the following days that it was Karawan's curse that had killed her mother. Her father left the school and vanished into the wilds in his grief for the loss of her mother. Karawan grew up an orphan, at first isolated because of her lack of control and later ostracized due to her ability. Though it was supposed to be kept quiet, secrets have a way of spreading quickly through Lledrith School.

[break]
In time, it became clear that Karawan could not truly practice magic for all she was marked a mage. However she could see it. First it was only when she was tired and meditative but quickly she learned to see the color of peoples' magic as easily as seeing their faces. Though she still must refine her gift, she has hopes of becoming a highly regarded Tracker. She knows also that her other ability gives her an edge in dealing with dangerous magic. The value of the ability to both track and drain dangerous magic is not lost to her.

[break]
Miscellaneous:
Drain ability will not be used without OOC consent. It is assumed that one or more of the compassionate elder mages at the school help to keep her 'fed'.
