Most animals can sense madness. It has a smell, or a look about it that signals that something is off. The longer Warin watched the other werewolf, the more he felt the strange tightness and tingling in his shoulders and back that usually hinted to him that something was off. Were he feathered, his feathers would have fluffed and risen with the tension. Still, he kept his posture relaxed, easy. It was a posture he'd maintained countless times before, one of easy readiness that had been trained into him from a relatively young age. It would take a lot more than time to rub off the soldier's bearing that shadowed his movements.
Still, there didn't seem to be a fight about to break out. There was a tense restraint in the air and Warin had a feeling it was because of the girl who stood between them. She seemed human enough, though he didn't always trust his nose in such things. His smile broadened a bit at her compliment to his alpha, glad someone had said it besides him. Plus he took a small amount of pride in being her escort, as silly as it was.
A couple together in a garden...
A faint flush colored his face and he shook his head. "We aren't a couple." It was a swift but not unkind correction, though clearly he was a little embarrassed by the assumption. "I just happened to draw the short straw. No one else wanted to stand here like a peasant next to a queen."
He flashed a grin at Alvina- in typical fashion, he sought humor to lighten the situation. Both for the girl's sake and for the sake of the night. They had both been having a good time, it would be a shame for it to end on a sour note.
